Chapter 606: Boundary Pokémon
~Third POV~
[Unova Region, Nighttime, Great Chasm]
The Unova Region was a land of sprawling metropolises, neon-lit bridges, and a relentless forward momentum that often buried its ancient secrets under layers of concrete and ambition. In Accumula Town, the air was filled with the rhythmic chanting of Team Plasma's foot soldiers and the wide-eyed dreams of novice trainers like Black and White.
But far to the northeast, beyond the winding paths of Route 22 and the rugged cliffs of Route 23, lay a wound in the earth that time and memory had tried to heal over with ice and silence. The Great Chasm.
It was a place whispered about in myths—a crater formed by a falling star, a site of cataclysmic impact. To the average citizen of Unova, it was a dangerous trek best avoided. To Azure, it was a tactical necessity.
Azure stood at the mouth of the entrance cave, his boots crunching against the frosted earth. His presence was a quiet storm, buffered by the small entourage he carried. On his shoulder, Pikachu twitched his ears, sparks occasionally dancing in his yellow cheeks.
Perched atop Azure's head, an Eevee let out a soft yawn, her fur fluffed up against the nocturnal chill. And tucked within the folds of his high-collared jacket, a Mew—disguised as a tiny, sleepy Pichu—shifted comfortably.
A voice echoed directly into Azure's mind. It was mischievous, slick, and slightly distorted, and it said, "Are we sure about this, Boss?"
Azure glanced down at his shadow. It was darker than it should have been, elongated by the moonlight, and from it, two glowing red eyes peered out. Gengar, her form shimmering like an oil slick, manifested her head partially above the ground.
Rotom's voice chirped from Azure's hand within the Arc Phone, the screen glowing with a holographic map projected by the Rotom inhabiting the device, "The data is accurate, Zzt! The thermal signatures are dropping exponentially as we descend. My sensors indicate a localized phenomenon of absolute zero energy ahead! Bzz-t!"
Azure smirked, his eyes reflecting the pale blue light of the icy cave as he said happily, "Good work, Rotom. We're ahead of schedule. Ghetsis is busy playing philosopher in the south; he has no idea the 'Empty Dragon' is about to be taken off the board."
Zoura's voice chimed in. The fox Pokémon sniffed the air, his tail wagging telepathically said nervously, 'I hope there's something to eat down there. The air tastes like… frozen nothing. It's weird.'
Azure cautioned, his voice low and steady, "Stay sharp, Zorua. We're entering the territory of a Legend that doesn't play by the rules of the court."
As they stepped into the cavern, the temperature plummeted.
The transition was jarring. Outside, it was a cool autumn night; inside, it was a tomb of permafrost. The walls were jagged, coated in a thick, translucent layer of ice that seemed to swallow the light of Azure's flashlight.
*Crunch—Crunch*
The sound of his footsteps echoed, magnified by the unnatural silence. Soon, the local inhabitants began to emerge. A group of Excadrill burst from the frozen soil, their steel claws gleaming.
From the ceiling, Vanillish drifted down like macabre chandeliers, their breath puffing out in crystalline clouds. Solrock and Lunatone hovered in the shadows, their ancient, stony eyes tracking the intruder.
They hissed and growled, a collective warning from the wild.
Azure said softly, "Gengar, Darkrai."
*THWUMP*
From his shadow, the oppressive weight of the Pitch-Black Pokémon began to bleed outward. Darkrai didn't even need to fully manifest. A wave of pure, concentrated nightmare aura rippled through the air like a physical shockwave.
The wild Pokémon froze.
The Vanillish shattered their own composure, fleeing into the upper crevices. The Excadrill dove back into the earth with frantic speed. The Lunatone drifted away, their rocky bodies trembling. They didn't just see a trainer; they saw a predator that occupied a higher rung on the cosmic ladder.
Gengar cackled mischievously, her tongue lolling out, "Weaklings! They don't even have the spirit to be haunted!"
Azure didn't chuckle. He continued his stroll, his gaze fixed forward. As they descended deeper, the Pokémon stopped appearing altogether. The silence became deafening—a heavy, pressurized quiet that made his ears pop. The very air felt thick, as if the oxygen itself were being suppressed.
They reached a dark, narrow entrance that led to the heart of the Chasm. Azure stopped for a moment, adjusting his cloak.
Even with his internal Aura channeled to provide warmth, the cold here was… different. It wasn't just a lack of heat; it was an active vacuum.
Zorua's voice was small now, the telepathy wavering, 'Azure… I don't like this. It feels like something is missing a piece.'
Azure replied, "That's because it is."
He stepped through the threshold.
The temperature didn't just drop; it plummeted into a realm of physical impossibility. Azure felt his muscles tighten instantly.
His joints groaned like old wood. His breath didn't just mist; it crystallized into tiny shards that fell to the floor with a sound like breaking glass, taking each step.
*Tink—Tink*
He flared his Aura, a shimmering blue-gold veil enveloping him and his team. Pikachu huddled closer to his neck, and Eevee tucked her nose under her tail. Even the Rotom in his phone seemed to lag, the screen flickering as the battery struggled against the drain.
This cold wasn't malicious. That was the most terrifying part. It was ambient. It was the apathy of the universe personified.
It was the feeling of a star going out, not with a bang, but with a sigh.
And then, he saw them.
Two yellow orbs, glowing with a dim, sickly light, unblinking in the darkness.
As Azure approached, the full form of the creature was revealed. It was a monstrosity of biology and frost. Its body was grey and slate, resembling a dragon that had been partially hollowed out. Its wings were uneven—one large and jagged, the other stumped and coated in a block of ice that refused to melt. Its face was a mask of frozen agony, its jaw clamped in a perpetual, icy grimace.
Kyurem. The Boundary Pokémon.
[Kyurem – Boundary Pokémon Lv.75]
Azure stood before it, dwarfed by its sheer scale. The Pokedex claimed Kyurem was roughly three meters tall, but standing here, Azure realized how wrong the books were. The creature was a mountain of frozen meat and ancient power. It sat hunched over, its very presence draining the energy from the room.
It stared at him...
There was no territorial anger, no curiosity, no 'who dares disturb my slumber.'
There was only absence.
Gengar whispered, for once losing her bravado, "It's… so empty…"
She retreated into Azure's shadow, seeking the warmth of his soul. Azure took a breath, feeling the ice sting his lungs.
He looked directly into those hollow yellow eyes.
Azure greeted casually, "Hey there, Empty Dragon."
Kyurem did not move. It didn't even seem to breathe.
It was a statue of ice in a gallery of shadows.
Azure reached into his pocket and pulled out a sphere. It wasn't a standard Pokéball. It was a Master Ball, but its surface had a unique, iridescent sheen—a custom creation forged by his Mewtwo during their time in the Kanto region. He held it up, the purple shell catching the dim glow of Kyurem's eyes.
He said calmly, his voice echoing in the hollow chamber, "My name's Azure Sky. I'll get straight to the point. I'm not here to worship you, and I'm not here to use you as a battery for a flying ship. I want to capture you to be my partner."
The yellow eyes flickered, just a fraction.
Azure continued, his grin returning, eager and sharp, "I know what you are. I know you're the husk left behind when the Original Dragon split into Truth and Ideals. I'm interested in recovering your lost strength. If you accept, I promise you that one day, I will be the one to fill you with both. I will find Reshiram and Zekrom. I will complete your Absofusion. I will make you whole again. The Hero you've been waiting for? He's standing right here. So, what say you, Kyurem?"
A low, hollow sound filled the cavern. It wasn't a roar. It was the sound of a glacier shifting, a deep, resonant vibration that made Azure's teeth ache.
The voice wasn't spoken; it was a resonance felt in the marrow of Azure's bones. It was ancient, dusty, and utterly apathetic, said, "You regard me as the Empty Dragon… Then you promise to fill me with truth and ideals… Your knowledge is exceptional, human. Most who find this place simply freeze and become part of the silence. What do you expect from me?"
Azure shrugged, though the movement was stiff from the cold. He replied calmly, eyeing Kyurem, "Nothing much. Just a few battles when I call you, or perhaps some help when the world tries to fall apart again. I rarely ask my Legends to fight unless it's necessary. Ideally, I just capture you, and that's that. But if you want some grand test or a struggle to prove my worth, I'll acquiesce."
The ice dragon remained still for a long time...
Then, with a slow, agonizing grace, it lumbered forward. Its footsteps didn't thud; they crunched, shattering the frozen floor beneath its weight…
*CRUNCH*
It leaned down until its horrifying, frozen face was inches from Azure's. Azure didn't flinch. He met the gaze of the void.
He could feel his very blood slowing, his heart rate dropping as Kyurem's aura tried to pull him into the same state of stasis it inhabited. Kyurem rumbled, "Interesting… I can see your strength. Your resolve is not the brittle ice of a child. It is the tempered steel of one who has walked through fire. Your willpower is… substantial. Very well. I have waited in this cold for eons. I do not care if I must wait longer within a sphere. But the void in me does not fill easily."
Kyurem's head tilted slightly, its yellow eyes scanning Azure's team.
It looked at the Pikachu, the Eevee, and the trembling shadow of Gengar.
It said simply, "I accept."
Azure blinked. He had prepared for a titanic struggle, a battle that would level the Chasm. He didn't expect such an easy response.
He couldn't help but ask Kyurem with a raised eyebrow, "That easily? No battle to show myself or test? No trial of the frozen heart?"
Kyurem replied, its voice draining Azure's remaining heat like a siphon, "I do not care. Effort is for those who believe they have something to lose. I am nothing. If your path requires me, then I shall be the tool you used to carve it. If you fail, I will simply return to the ice. Time means nothing to the dead."
A chilly silence followed...
Azure let out a short, sharp laugh that turned into a puff of crystals and replied, "Fair enough. If you work with me, I'll keep my word. I'll make you whole again."
*Whooosh*
Kyurem's eyes suddenly glowed with a piercing intensity. From the shadows behind the dragon, a small, crystalline object drifted forward. It was shaped like a pair of compass needles joined by a central core, pulsing with a faint, rhythmic light…
The [DNA Splicers].
[Item: DNA Splicers
Rarity Item: -
Type: Key Item
Description: A splicer that fuses Kyurem and a certain Pokémon. They are said to have been one in the beginning. While the player does not have a Black Kyurem or White Kyurem, the DNA Splicers can be used to fuse Kyurem with Reshiram or Zekrom to become White Kyurem or Black Kyurem, respectively.]
The relic floated toward Azure, then hovered momentarily before being absorbed into the icy mass of Kyurem's stunted wing. The dragon lowered its head, touching its frozen snout to the Master Ball in Azure's hand. Kyurem murmured, "You may take me, young Hero. But remember… even a void can consume the one who holds it."
Azure smirked, his finger clicking the trigger on the Master Ball. He said casually, "I've held worse."
The Master Ball opened, but there was no flash of red light. Instead, a vacuum of blue-white energy erupted, swirling around Kyurem. The massive dragon was pulled into the small sphere, its weight and presence vanishing from the room in a sudden, violent intake of air.
The ball fell into Azure's palm. It didn't shake. It didn't click three times. It simply went dark, the latch locking with a finality that felt like a tomb door closing.
*Clack*
The temperature in the room didn't rise—Kyurem's presence had left an indelible mark on the environment—but the pressure vanished. The 'Absence' was gone, replaced by the mundane cold of a regular ice cave.
Zorua breathed, stepping out from behind Azure's leg, and asked, 'Whoa… Did that just happen? He just… gave up?'
Azure stared at the Master Ball...
It was unnaturally cold, his glove already frosting over where it touched the shell. It felt like holding a solid block of liquid nitrogen. Then checked its info.
[Kyurem the Boundary Pokémon. According to an old legend in Lacunosa Town, Kyurem is an extraterrestrial Pokémon that crash-landed on the planet inside on an icy meteor that may have been a Dragon Stone, creating the Giant Chasm. This legend describes Kyurem as hostile towards Pokémon and humans, because it supposedly devoured them if they were found outside of Lacunosa Town during the night.
However, according to another old legend told by Drayden, Kyurem was created by the leftovers of the single powerful Dragon Pokémon commanded by the heroes of Truth and Ideals of Unova after it split up into Reshiram and Zekrom. Its true origin is unknown. Kyurem waits for a hero to fill in the missing parts of its body with truth or ideals.
Kyurem emits extremely cold air and generates powerful, freezing energy inside itself, but its body becomes frozen when the energy leaks out. Its latent power exceeds even that of Reshiram and Zekrom, but it is kept at bay by the extreme cold. To stabilize its cellular structure, Kyurem uses its ice powers to freeze its own body. It can use its tendril-like appendages to transform Reshiram and Zekrom back into their respective Dragon Stones and even absofuse with them while they're in that state.
Kyurem is somehow capable of flying despite its frozen wings. According to the Village of Dragons' Elder, Kyurem is considered one of the strongest Dragon-type Pokémon in the world, being powerful enough to cover Opelucid City and even the entire Unova region in ice. It is known to be capable of speaking through telepathy.]

Azure glanced at Kyurem's movepool as he thought, grimacing internally, 'I'll need to teach this Ice Dragon some good moves. And some sparring sessions with Mewtwo or any of the legends to keep Kyurem in shape.'
Azure said calmly, his voice returning to its normal, confident tone, "He didn't give up, Zorua. He just doesn't see the point in fighting. When you're at absolute zero, any change is an improvement. Even being captured."
Gengar popped out of the shadow, shivering visibly, chiming in, "He was creepy! Boss, I like ghosts, I like darkness, but that guy… that guy was just empty. There wasn't even a soul to prank!"
Azure mused, clipping the Master Ball to a special reinforced slot on his belt, "He's a fragment. A piece of the Original Dragon that's been waiting thousands of years to be finished. We just gave him a reason to wake up."
Azure called out, "Rotom."
Rotom chirped at being called out, "Zzt! Yes, Azure? Internal systems are returning to 100% functionality!!"
Azure smiled as he said calmly, "Set a course for the nearest exit toward Route 23. We've got a long walk ahead of us, and I want to be back in civilization before the two realize I've been gone for more than a few hours."
Rotom grinned as it chirped proudly, "Acknowledged! Calculating route… avoid the pits and the frozen spikes! Let's go!"
As Azure turned to leave, he cast one last look back at the center of the crater. The Great Chasm felt smaller now, less like a legendary landmark and more like an empty nest. He thought about the Original Dragon—the being that had been the pride of the Twin Heroes of Unova. He wondered if, when he finally gathered the pieces, it would remember the cold. Or if it would thank him for the fire.
Azure whispered to himself, his hair billowing as he began the ascent, "Team Plasma wants a legend. I'll give them one. But it won't be one they can control."
Azure's journey through Unova had only just begun. He had his eyes set on the gyms, the Elite Four, and the champion's throne. But more than that, he was playing a game of chess with the very foundations of the region's history.
And he had just taken the most powerful piece on the board.
Azure felt a pang of amusement about the Dragons of Ideals and Truth. He wondered what Ghetsis's expression would be when they met the third member of the Tao Trio. They had no idea that the "Boundary" between those two forces was currently sitting in a sphere on Azure's belt, silent and waiting.
He reached down and tapped the Master Ball. The cold was still there, a constant reminder of the void he carried. Zorua followed beside him, his head tilted, and asked, 'Azure? Are you going to use him in the League?'
Azure thought for a moment before answering honestly, "Maybe. Kyurem is for what comes after the League. He's for the storm that Ghetsis thinks he's brewing. We're going to let Black and White have their adventure. We'll play the role of the wandering mentor, the veteran trainer."
He stood up, stretching his limbs, adding, "But when the time comes to face the Original Dragon… we'll be the ones holding the missing piece."
Gengar cackled, appearing behind him and miming putting a top hat on an imaginary giant dragon, "I still think he needs a hat! An empty dragon with a fancy hat! That's a brand White would love it!"
Azure laughed, the sound bright and clear against the backdrop of the Unovan wilderness. He replied, "Maybe, Gengar. Maybe."
He looked toward the future ahead. The Unova League was waiting—new friends, new rivals, and a plot that threatened to tear the region apart. Most trainers would be nervous. Azure Sky just felt a familiar thrill.
After all, he had a god in his pocket and the future in his head.
What was there to be afraid of?
Azure commanded, "Let's move. We've got a badge to win."
/////
[Deep within the Master Ball]
Kyurem drifted in a sea of violet energy. For the first time in eons, the biting cold of the Chasm was gone. In its place was a strange, buzzing warmth—the aura of the boy who had claimed it.
It wasn't Truth. It wasn't Ideals. Not yet.
But as Kyurem settled into a deep, peaceful slumber, it felt something it hadn't felt since the day the brothers fought and the world broke.
It felt a spark.
The dragon's consciousness whispered into the void, "Azure Sky... Show me the world you intend to build."
Outside, the stars over Unova seemed to shine just a little bit brighter. The journey was only beginning, and the pieces of the puzzle were finally starting to fall into place. Azure, the transmigrated Champion, was no longer just a player in the game.
He was the one holding the board.
