Chapter 558: Battle Tower
~Third POV~
[Sinnoh Region, Next Day, Battle Zone – Fight Area]
The crisp, invigorating air of the Sinnoh Battle Zone was a welcome sensation the next morning. It carried the scent of fertile earth, distant ocean spray, and the lingering ozone tang of recent battles.
Azure Sky, a figure of lean purpose and quiet determination, stepped onto the worn path of the Fight Area. His jacket, usually a subtle backdrop for his vibrant team, seemed to hum with anticipation.
Azure murmured, his voice a low rumble, "Alright, team. Today's the day."
Pikachu, a familiar weight on his shoulder, let out a cheerful cry and rubbed his cheek against Azure's, "Pika-Pika! (No kidding.)"
Eevee, perched like a fluffy crown on his head, gave a soft cry, twitching her nose as she scanned the horizon, "Eevee! (Yeah, the last one.)"
A tiny, pink-cheeked Pichu (Mew) peeked out from the folds of Azure's jacket, its eyes curious. A raspy voice echoed from Azure's shadow, "Finally!"
A shimmer of dark purple coalesced as Gengar, Azure's phantom, materialized slightly, her grin wide and mischievous, added, "Another brain to rattle, eh, boss?"
From the Arc Phone in Azure's hand, Rotom chimed in, its electronic voice buzzing with data, "Affirmative! The Battle Tower, the final bastion of the Sinnoh Battle Frontier, awaits. Success rate for first-time challengers to reach Tower Tycoon Palmer: 0.05%."
Azure chuckled, a sound surprisingly warm for the cool morning, as he said coolly, "Don't I know it, Rotom. Palmer's a legend for a reason. And getting to him means clearing 49 straight wins. It's a marathon, not a sprint."
Pikachu pumped a tiny fist, "Pika! (Yeah!)"
Eevee nudged Azure's ear with her head and chirped resolutely, "Eevoi! (We're ready, Azure!)"
Azure said happily, giving Eevee a gentle pat, "Good, because I'm counting on you all, even if you're only watching this first part."
He looked towards the imposing structure of the Battle Tower, its sleek, modern design contrasting sharply with the rugged landscape of the Battle Zone. It was a fortress of skill, a gauntlet testing endurance, strategy, and the unbreakable bond between trainer and Pokémon. He thought of the prints he'd already collected. The tactical genius of Factory Head Thorton, the rhythmic battles with Arcade Star Dahlia, the refined elegance of Castle Valet Darach, and the unwavering defense of Hall Matron Argenta.
Each one had been a challenging test, a unique puzzle. But the Tower… the Tower was different. It wasn't just a single battle; it was a relentless climb, a testament to pure, unadulterated strength and resilience.
He felt a surge of familiar excitement, a thrill that had become second nature to him in this incredible world. Azure mused aloud in an excited tone, "49 trainers, one after another. It's going to take everything we've got. But after all we've been through, it's nothing we can't handle, right?"
The challenges only made the victories sweeter.
Gengar cackled, her form swaying in Azure's shadow, "Nyahaha! 49 warm-ups before the main event. Just means more souls and victims for my collection... I mean, more experience for the team!"
Rotom interjected dryly, scolding Gengar, "Warning: Unauthorized collection of souls is not advisable within Battle Frontier premises."
Azure just shook his head, a faint smile on his lips. He said calmly, "Come on, everyone. Let's do this."
With renewed resolve, he strode towards the entrance of the Battle Tower, the final hurdle in his quest to conquer the Sinnoh Battle Frontier…

[Sinnoh Region, Battle Zone – Battle Tower]
The interior of the Battle Tower was a marvel of futuristic architecture. Polished metallic floors gleamed under soft, recessed lighting, and holographic displays flickered with battle statistics and trainer rankings. The air was charged with a palpable energy, a mixture of anticipation and focused intensity.
Azure approached the reception desk, where a polite woman with neatly styled hair greeted him. She said professionally, "Welcome to the Battle Tower, Challenger. You've come a long way. Are you ready to begin your challenge?"
Azure confirmed, his voice firm, "I am."
The receptionist smiled as she gestured to a nearby terminal, "Excellent. For the Battle Tower challenges, you may select three Pokémon for a single battle format. You are also permitted to bring your own held items for each Pokémon, provided no two Pokémon carry the same item. Please make your selections."
Azure nodded, familiar with the rules. He knew exactly who he needed for this endurance run. His gaze drifted to his immediate team, giving them a reassuring glance.
He said calmly to Pikachu, Eevee, Pichu, Rotom, and Gengar, "You guys find some good seats. I'll be back soon."
Pikachu saluted, "Pika-Pika! (Right!)"
Eevee nuzzled his hand before leaping down. Pichu (Mew) gave a tiny wave from his jacket. Gengar faded back into his shadow with a nod and whispered, 'Don't lose, boss, or I'll haunt your dreams with bad battle replays.'
Rotom announced as it zipped out of the Arc Phone and hovered towards the observation deck, "Initiating spectating mode."
Turning back to the terminal, Azure typed in his choices. He stated, "Infernape, with an [Expert Belt]…"
The fire-and-fighting type was a powerhouse, capable of dishing out massive damage with its STAB moves. He continued, "Lucario, holding a [Lucarionite Z.]"
Lucario's Aura abilities and Mega Evolution potential, combined with a powerful Z-Move, would be crucial for breaking through tough opponents. Azure finished, "And Gallade, with a [Galladite]."
Gallade's precision, strong Psychic and Fighting moves, and Mega Evolution would provide excellent coverage and versatility. With those 3 Pokémon, Azure was confident in his chances of winning.
The receptionist processed his choices, then said politely, "Very well. Infernape, Lucario, and Gallade. Your entry is confirmed. Please proceed to Battle Room Alpha. Your first opponent awaits."
Taking a deep breath, Azure walked through the automatic doors. The battle room was a circular arena, bathed in bright spotlights.
The stands were surprisingly full, an eclectic mix of trainers, spectators, and other Frontier Brains observing the challenges. He could make out the distinctive forms of Thorton, Dahlia, Darach, and Argenta among the crowd, their eyes keen. He even spotted his own small support crew, waving enthusiastically.
As Azure stepped into the first Battle Room, the atmosphere immediately shifted. The stadium was compact, intimately designed for intense three-on-three battles. A small crowd, mostly other challengers and staff, filled the sparse seats, their murmurs a low hum. On the opposing side, a young trainer, perhaps a few years younger than Azure, already stood ready.
The announcer's voice boomed, sharp and clear, "Let the battle begin!"
Azure took a deep breath, drawing on his vast experience. He knew patience was key, but so was decisive power. He wasn't here to simply win; he was here to dominate.
Battle 1: Azure called, sending out his fiery primate, "Go, Infernape!"
*POP-Thud*
Infernape landed with a powerful thud, flames dancing around its shoulders and head, radiating raw power. His opponent's first Pokémon was a Roserade. A quick Flare Blitz from Infernape, boosted by the [Expert Belt] against the Grass/Poison type, incinerated the Roserade's defenses.
*CRACKLE*
The referee announced, "Roserade is unable to battle!"
The next was a Vaporeon. Infernape, though powerful, would struggle. Azure swapped quickly, "Infernape, return! Go, Gallade!"
*POP*
Gallade materialized, his arm blades gleaming. A powerful Close Combat against the bulky Water-type, followed by a Psycho Cut, brought Vaporeon down.
*WHOOSH-THUD*
The referee declared, "Vaporeon is unable to battle!"
*POP*
The final Pokémon was an Espeon. Azure commanded, triggering Gallade's transformation, "Gallade, Mega Evolve!"
*FLASH*
The Mega Stone glowed, pulsating with psychic energy as Gallade's form honed, his blades sharper, his aura more intense. A boosted Psycho Cut sliced through Espeon's defenses, earning Azure his first victory.
*FWOOM-SHING*
The referee declared, "Espeon is unable to battle! Winner: Azure Sky!"
A small cheer erupted from the stands, and Azure's Pokémon, watching from their designated area, celebrated. Eevee chirped, bouncing excitedly, "Eevoi! Eeveooi! (First one down!)"
Rotom meticulously logged the battle data. Gengar drawled, but a flicker of pride was evident in her ethereal eyes, "Elementary."
The battles rolled on, a blur of strategic commands, flashing moves, and triumphant cries. Azure's team proved its mettle time and again. Infernape blazed through Steel, Grass, and Ice types with Flare Blitz and Close Combat.
Lucario, with its versatile special and physical moves, along with the ability to Mega Evolve or unleash a Z-Move, became Azure's trump card against unexpected threats or particularly bulky foes. Gallade, with its precision and raw Psychic/Fighting power, cleanly swept through opponents that Infernape might struggle against.
Battles 2-6: Azure navigated through various trainers, each with their own strategies. Some strategies focused on status conditions, others on entry hazards, but Azure always found a way to adapt.
He rotated his team effectively, ensuring no single Pokémon took too much damage or PP drain unless necessary. He carefully chose when to Mega Evolve Lucario or Gallade, saving those power spikes for critical moments.
Battle 7 (Room Boss): The boss of the first room presented a more coordinated team, featuring a bulky Snorlax, a speedy Electivire, and a defensive Skarmory. Azure commanded, "Infernape, focus on Electivire!"
*Swoosh*
A Flare Blitz took out the Electric type quickly…
*THUD*
Snorlax entered the battle next. Azure swapped to Lucario, ordering, "Lucario, Strong Style Aura Sphere!"
*WHOOSH-BOOOM*
Lucario unleashed a wave of spiritual energy. It exploded upon contact with Snorlax, easily defeating it. Then Skarmory appeared as Azure thought, 'This is a tricky one.'
Azure quickly swapped to Gallade, commanding, "Gallade, focus on defense, then use Psycho Cut when an opening appears!"
Azure waited, reading his opponent as Gallade dodged a Brave Bird, then countered with a devastating Psycho Cut, bringing the Steel/Flying type down.
*CLANG-SHING*
Skarmory has fainted as the referee declared, "Trainer defeated! Room cleared! Challenger Azure Sky has achieved 7 consecutive wins!"
The announcer's voice boomed again, and a small wave of applause followed. Azure's Pokémon were instantly healed by the Battle Tower's automated system. He felt a satisfying surge of Battle Points being added to his tally.
Rotom calculated, its voice a rapid series of beeps and boops, "Seven down, forty-two to go. Efficiency rating: 98.7%. Keep it up, boss!"
Pikachu cheered, "Pika Pika! (You can do this!)"
The pattern repeated itself. Azure entered a new room, faced seven opponents, and emerged victorious. His mind, honed by years of intense battles and three full League tournaments, was a finely tuned machine, analyzing types, predicting moves, and formulating counter-strategies on the fly.
He meticulously monitored his Pokémon's energy, knowing that wasting a Mega Evolution or a potent Z-Move could cost him dearly in later, tougher rooms.

[Sinnoh Region, Later, Battle Zone – Battle Tower]
Mid-Game (Battles 15-30): The opponents grew stronger, their Pokémon better trained, their strategies more nuanced. Azure faced teams built around Trick Room, weather effects, and disruptive abilities. One trainer used a Sandstorm team with a Tyranitar and Garchomp.
Azure countered with Infernape's speed and Close Combat, relying on its Fighting-type moves to chip away at the Rock/Ground and Dragon/Ground behemoths. When Tyranitar set up the sand, Azure used Lucario's Aura Sphere to hit it from a distance, minimizing contact with the sandstorm.
Another trainer featured a paralysis team, with a Thunder Wave user and a Pokémon with the Guts Ability. Azure, anticipating this, often led with Gallade, who, as a Fighting/Psychic type, received neutral damage and could often take out the paralysis inducer before it struck.
Gengar commented, watching Azure skillfully navigate a Freeze-Dry from an opposing Froslass with a well-timed switch to Infernape, who then retaliated with a super-effective Flare Blitz, "These consecutive battles are getting interesting. The Boss is not leaving any chances for openings."
The consecutive wins piled up: 14, 21, 28, 35.
Azure felt the familiar strain of sustained focus, but his determination never wavered. His Pokémon, too, showed signs of effort – a faint dusting of dust on Infernape's fur, Lucario's occasional heavy breath, Gallade's more measured stance. Yet, their eyes burned with an unwavering resolve, mirroring their trainer's.
Late Game (Battles 36-48): The trainers in these rooms were clearly veterans, their Pokémon boasting perfect IVs and EVs, holding strategic items, and executing complex strategies. Azure had to pull out all the stops.
He sparingly used Lucario's Z-Move, All-Out Pummeling, for critical KOs on particularly stubborn threats like a defensive Ferrothorn or a bulky Blissey. He had to think several steps ahead, predicting switches and move choices.
In one particularly tense battle (win 42), Azure faced a Sturdy Skarmory that set up Stealth Rock and then used Whirlwind to phase out his Pokémon. He quickly realized the opponent was trying to rack up entry hazard damage.
He kept Infernape in the back, clean, then sent it out to finish off the Skarmory. The next Pokémon was a bulky Water-type, Milotic, that used Recover. Azure switched to Gallade, Mega Evolved, and used Drain Punch to heal himself while dealing damage, slowly chipping away at the Milotic.
The last was a speedy Weavile. Azure made a risky switch to Lucario, who resisted Ice Shard, then outsped it with a Bullet Punch, securing the win…
*CLANG-WHOOSH-THUD*
Rotom observed, zooming around the stands, its holographic display showing complex battle equations, "Azure is brilliant at reading his opponents. His success rate in predicting opponent switches is currently 92.3%."
Gengar scoffed, though a hint of admiration was in her tone, "Of course he is. He didn't beat three leagues and half the Frontier by being a dunce."
Pikachu and Eevee watched with wide, focused eyes, cheering every victory, wincing at every hit taken. Pichu (Mew), seemingly asleep, had its ears twitching occasionally, hinting at its awareness of the escalating tension.
Battle 49 (Room Boss): Azure stood in the arena, worn but resolute. 48 trainers were defeated. This was it. The final hurdle before Palmer.
His Infernape, Lucario, and Gallade stood ready, their eyes gleaming with determination, reflecting the sweat and effort of nearly fifty consecutive battles. His opponent, a grim-faced man with a team focused on debilitating status effects and stalling, sent out his first Pokémon: a Toxapex.
Its Merciless ability and Baneful Bunker were notorious. Azure knew getting poisoned was a death sentence in a prolonged battle. Azure commanded, starting with a quick, priority hit to flinch the Toxapex, "Infernape, Fake Out!"
*WHAM*
Toxapex recoiled. Then Azure ordered, "Now, Flare Blitz!"
*HISSS-CRACKLE*
Infernape blazed forward, delivering a devastating blow. The Toxapex, surprisingly resilient, held on with a sliver of health.
The opponent commanded, "Recover!"
*FLASH*
Toxapex healed a significant amount. Azure grits his teeth as he commands, "Again, Infernape, Flare Blitz!"
*BOOOM*
Infernape, ignoring its own recoil, slammed into Toxapex, finally knocking it out. The referee declared, "Toxapex is unable to battle!"
Next up was a Porygon2, holding an [Eviolite], making it incredibly bulky. Azure called, sensing Infernape's dwindling energy, "Infernape, return! Go, Lucario!"
*POP*
Lucario took the field, radiating a focused aura. The opposing Trainer commanded, "Porygon2, Tri Attack!"
*PEW*
The Porygon2 fired a multicolored beam. Lucario braced, taking the hit. Azure commanded, "Lucario, use Aura Sphere!"
*WHOOSH-BAM*
Lucario focused, launching a bright blue orb of pure spiritual energy. Porygon2 took the super-effective hit, but its bulk allowed it to endure.
The Trainer ordered, "Porygon2, Ice Beam!"
*FSHWOOM*
A blast of ice struck Lucario, doing decent damage. Azure knew he couldn't let this go on. He triggered the Omni Ring, "Lucario, Mega Evolve!"
*FLASH*
The Omi Ring flowed, enveloping Lucario in a vibrant, rainbow-colored aura before returning to its standard Mega Evolution. Then Azure placed the Fighting Z-Crystal on his Omi Ring, declaring, "Now, All-Out Pummeling!"
*FLASH*
Lucario exploded towards Porygon2, a flurry of empowered punches and kicks, culminating in a devastating final strike!
*WHAM-WHAM-CRASH*
Porygon2, unable to withstand the Z-Powered Mega Attack, finally fell. The referee declared, "Porygon2 is unable to battle!"
The final Pokémon was a Gengar, a powerful Special Attacker. Azure's Lucario, having just expended its Aura and Mega Evolution, was looking a bit tired.
Azure said calmly, knowing Gengar was too fast and too powerful for a weakened Lucario to handle, "Lucario, return! Go, Gallade!"
*POP*
Gallade burst onto the field, his arm blades ready. The opponent commanded, "Gengar, Shadow Ball!"
*CRACKLE*
A dark orb of spectral energy hurtled towards Gallade. Azure countered, recognizing the opportunity, "Gallade, use Swords Dance!"
Gallade ignored the incoming Shadow Ball, focused its mental energy, and powered up its attacks, taking the hit. Then…
*Swf*
Teleported away from the incoming attack. Azure commanded, pressing his advantage, "Now, Agile Style Psycho Cut!"
Gallade, powered up, moved with blinding speed, its blade glowing with psychic energy as it launched its attack…
*SHING*
The super-effective move struck Gengar, dealing massive damage. But the opponent's Gengar was tough, holding on with a [Focus Sash]!
The trainer ordered, "Gengar, Destiny Bond!"
Azure's eyes widened as he thought, 'Destiny Bond! If Gallade attacked again and Gengar was knocked out, Gallade would go down with it!'
Azure commanded, his voice calm despite the rising tension, "Gallade, hold your position! Wait for an opening!"
The opponent's Gengar floated, its grin widening, waiting for Gallade to strike. Azure analyzed the situation. Gallade was almost untouched, but Gengar was at 1 HP. If Gallade attacked, they both went down.
Azure had to outlast the Destiny Bond or find a way around it. Destiny Bond only worked if Gengar was knocked out by the opponent's next move. Seeing Azure not taking the bait, the trainer ordered, "Gengar, Shadow Ball again!"
*CRACKLE*
The Shadow Ball was tossed at Azure. But he countered as he ordered, "Now, Gallade, finish it with Psycho Cut!"
Gallade's blade flashed, cutting through the weakened Gengar and the incoming Shadow Ball and then...
*SHING*
The Psycho Cut cut through the Shadow Ball. And the incoming psychic slash slashed Gengar down, causing it to faint.
The announcer's voice boomed, "Gengar is unable to battle!"
Azure let out a relieved breath as the announcer continued, "And the opponent is out of Pokémon! Challenger Azure Sky has achieved his 49th consecutive victory!"
The crowd, though small, erupted in a genuine burst of applause. Azure's Pokémon, from their spectator spots, cheered loudly. Azure's Pokémon even cheered along with the crowd at their Trainer's achievement.
Azure walked forward, recalling a triumphant Gallade, Infernape, and Lucario. He patted their Poké Balls with pride as he said proudly, praising them, "You all were magnificent. Truly incredible work."
*Wiggle*
The Pokémon pulsed with happiness inside their balls. After having his battered but victorious team healed to pristine condition by the Battle Tower staff, Azure was guided to an exclusive elevator.
*Whooosh*
The doors slid open with a soft whoosh, and he stepped inside, the atmosphere growing increasingly hushed and important. He felt the elevator ascend smoothly, carrying him higher, the weight of the moment pressing upon him as he thought, 'This was it. The final challenge of the Sinnoh Battle Frontier.'
*CHING*
The doors chimed and then parted, revealing a breathtaking sight. The top floor was an open-air arena, bathed in the golden hues of the late afternoon sun. Below, the sprawling Battle Zone stretched out, a patchwork of green fields and distant structures.
In the center of this magnificent arena stood a man, broad-shouldered and radiating an aura of calm strength. Tower Tycoon Palmer.
Palmer turned, a warm, genuine smile gracing his features. He had a friendly, almost jovial demeanor, but Azure could sense the steel beneath the surface. Palmer's voice was deep, resonating with a quiet authority, "Azure. It's a pleasure to meet you. I must say, reaching me in such a short amount of time, after facing the other Frontier Brains… It's quite remarkable."
He gestured vaguely as he continued casually, "Factory Head Thorton, Arcade Star Dahlia, Castle Valet Darach, Hall Matron Argenta… each of them formidable in their own right, and not easily defeated. Yet, you swept through them, one after another, with such skill, experience, and sheer power."
Palmer chuckled, a pleasant, rumbling sound as he continued in a casual tone with an eager grin, "I had to admit, I was shocked and thoroughly impressed. Though looking at your battle records – three League championships, a key player in stopping Team Galactic – perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. But I was, and frankly, that only makes me more eager for our battle."
Azure returned Palmer's smile, a genuine warmth spreading through him. He replied casually, "I could say the same, Mr. Palmer. Your reputation precedes you."
He looked out at the setting sun, feeling a profound sense of accomplishment, yet also anticipation for the final test. This wasn't just a challenge; it was an affirmation. There was still so much to learn, so much to achieve.
He was reassured, seeing there was hope for the better, a hope he felt strongly when he was with his companions Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. Palmer's gaze softened, a hint of something deeper in his eyes as he confessed, "You know, it's funny… You remind me a lot of… well, my son, sometimes. That same spark, that determination…"
Azure's eyes widened slightly, a flicker of recognition crossing his features. He had always noticed the resemblance. Now, hearing Palmer explicitly mention his son, a subtle nod passed between the two.
Azure said quietly, almost a statement rather than a question, "Pearl. He speaks of you often, Mr. Palmer. You resemble him quite a bit."
Palmer's eyes closed for a moment, with a contemplative look on his face. He opened his eyes, a faint sadness mingling with a resigned understanding as he confessed, "Yes, I know that now. Riley told me about it. Riley, you see, is a close friend of Byron from Canalave City. And a very dedicated trainer. In fact, he was training Diamond during… well, during the Team Galactic incident."
A soft, almost imperceptible ding from the Arc Phone signaled Rotom detecting the mention of Riley and Byron. Gengar, perched on Azure's shadow, shifted slightly, its grin softening. Azure smiled with a genuine, heartfelt expression as he replied, "Riley is a good man and a strong trainer. He certainly helped Diamond grow."
He paused, then continued, "It's… It's strange. Riley told me that you didn't know Pearl was involved in such a major conflict until he informed you of it."
Palmer looked away, a shadow of regret crossing his face. His voice was tinged with genuine remorse, "I… I blame myself. I've always been so focused on the Battle Frontier, on my duties here. I was a bad father, wasn't I? So consumed by my own ambition that I didn't know what my own son was going through, what dangers he faced."
Azure interjected softly but firmly, "No, Mr. Palmer, you mustn't say that. Pearl has spoken about you countless times. He's incredibly proud of you. He attributes his uncanny ability to predict a Pokémon's moves and to anticipate what's coming next entirely to you. He says it's a gift he inherited from his father, the great Tower Tycoon."
Azure's voice was warm as he continued, "He idolizes you, truly. And for my part, I'm deeply indebted to him. Pearl, along with Diamond, helped Platinum find her own resolve and strength during those trying times. He helped her realize her potential. He was vital."
As Azure spoke, Palmer's expression softened, the lines of worry easing from his face. A faint flush crept up his neck, a surprising blush for such a formidable man. He cleared his throat, suddenly looking a little flustered, "Ah, well, yes. Yes, he's… he's a good boy, Pearl. Always has been. But enough sentimentality!"
He abruptly changed the topic, his demeanor shifting back to the confident, jovial Battle Tycoon, "We're here for a battle, aren't we?"
Azure chuckled softly, understanding the unspoken shift, and replied, "We are."
Palmer's eyes, usually warm and friendly, hardened, locking with Azure's. The air crackled with anticipation, the gentle evening breeze suddenly feeling charged with electricity. This meant one thing: the battle would finally begin.
He could feel the pulse of adrenaline, the familiar surge of excitement. This was the final test, the culmination of his Battle Frontier journey. Standing before him was not just a powerful trainer, but a man who was both a legend and a reminder of the bonds forged during his Sinnoh adventure.
Azure thought, his own eyes gleaming with fierce determination, 'Alright, Palmer. Let's see what you've got.'
He reached for his Poké Balls, ready to unleash his chosen champions. The stage was set, the sun dipping below the horizon, casting long, dramatic shadows across the arena. The final Frontier challenge had arrived.
