Chapter 462: Grass Gym Battle

[Sinnoh Region, Later, Eterna City – Gym]
Platinum had just demonstrated her growing prowess, securing her Gym Badge with a well-fought victory. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and victory.
Pearl cheered, his voice echoing slightly in the natural amphitheater of the stands, "Great job, Platinum!"
Dia, ever the laid-back counterpart, gave a thumbs-up and added excitedly, "Yeah, you really showed her! Though your Ponyta's flames were getting a little too close to my hair."
Platinum, her expression a mixture of pride and dignified composure, simply adjusted herself and replied, "It was a logical battle. Every move had a purpose."
Azure chuckled from where he stood with them, Pikachu's ear twitching at the sound. He said, his eyes twinkling, "A purpose is good, but sometimes you need a little chaos. Now, if you'll all excuse me, it seems it's my turn."
Gardenia, the Eterna Gym Leader, stood on the opposite side of the field, a warm smile on her face. She called out, her voice full of cheerful energy, "Azure Sky. I've heard whispers about you. A former Champion, they say? I'm honored! Since you and Platinum both chose the Double Battle format, our match will be a 4-vs-4. Are you ready?"
Azure nodded, his demeanor shifting from friendly mentor to focused trainer. He strode onto the soft, moss-covered battlefield, the wooden planks creaking softly under his boots. He felt the familiar rush of adrenaline, the connection to the Pokémon at his command.
Gardenia, ever the professional, pulled out her Rotom Phone. A small, futuristic machine hummed to life beside her, projecting a series of holographic slots as she says, "Please select your four Pokémon for this battle."
Azure didn't hesitate. He recalled his team's strengths and weaknesses, the terrain, and his opponent's known tactics. For this battle, he picked his Alpha Rhyhorn, Elekid, Magby, and Hisuian Zoura while checking their status screens.

A beam of light scanned his Poké Balls, beeping as it registered the data. The machine whirred, and then a second, identical device appeared before Gardenia, dispensing her four chosen Pokémon.
Simultaneously, they raised their Poké Balls...
Gardenia cried, "Let's get blooming! Go, Ninetales! Cherrim!"
Azure flung his own, cried out, "Rise to the challenge! Rhyhorn! Gible!"
*Pop*
The field erupted in light and sound. On Azure's side, the ground trembled as his Alpha Rhyhorn materialized with its held item [Leftovers]. It was a behemoth, its horn thicker and sharper than any standard Rhyhorn, its rocky hide scarred with the marks of countless battles. It snorted, a cloud of dust puffing from its nostrils, "Grrr...."
Beside it, the 'Alpha Gible' flickered into existence. At first glance, it appeared to be Azure's Alpha Gible, the small, shark-like dragon, with its held item [Muscle Band] draped over its fins. But its eyes held a flicker of ancient, ghostly intelligence that was out of place on such a youthful face.
On Gardenia's side, the air grew warm instantly. Her Ninetales was a picture of regal grace, its nine tails fanning out like a golden bonfire. But the real shock came from its held item—a [Heat Rock], gleaming in the Gym's light.
Beside it, the Cherrim, holding a [Miracle Seed], seemed almost mundane… for a split second. Then, Ninetales's eyes flashed, and the world changed.
*FWOOOOOSH*
A brilliant, oppressive heat washed over the battlefield. The air shimmered, and a harsh, golden sun blazed where the Gym's ambient light had been. The effect was immediate—Ninetales's Hidden Ability: Drought.
*FLASH*
At the same time, Cherrim was wreathed in a dazzling pink-and-yellow light. Its body morphed, its petals unfurling into a radiant, sun-kissed bloom. Its ability, Flower Gift, had activated.
Its form shifted into its Sunshine Form, its stats surging. But more than that, Azure's mind raced through the data, 'Flower Gift boosts the Attack and Special Defense of itself and its allies by 50% in harsh sunlight. A 50% stat boost for both. This was not going to be a simple battle…'
He didn't let the shock show on his face. He raised a fist and commanded, "Rhyhorn, begin the setup! Use Stealth Rock!"
*RMBL*
The massive Rhyhorn stomped a foot, causing the ground to tremble. Sharp, crystalline shards of rock erupted from the ground on Gardenia's side of the field, hovering menacingly in the air.
Gardenia commanded, "Don't let them set the pace, Ninetales! Use Flamethrower on Rhyhorn! Cherrim, support with Solar Beam on the Gible!"
*SSSSS*
Ninetales took a deep breath, its chest glowing with orange light. A torrent of searing flame erupted from its mouth, streaking across the field toward the bulky Rhyhorn.
Azure said, his voice low but carrying across the arena, "Counter it. Strong Style Flamethrower."
Alpha Rhyhorn lowered its head, its body glowing with a faint energy. Just as the Flamethrower was about to hit, it unleashed its own power…
*BOOM*
A beam of pure fire, identical in strength to the one that had been fired at it, shot out from Rhyhorn's horn, colliding with the incoming attack in a spectacular explosion of steam and embers.
Gardenia grunted in surprise, "K-KUH! Why does it know Flamethrower? It canceled out Ninetale's own Flamethrower!"
*SHIII*
Simultaneously, Cherrim had already begun gathering light. The air shimmered as photons coalesced into a massive, glowing orb of energy in front of its mouth.
*PEW*
With a cry, it launched the devastating Solar Beam directly at the Pokémon it believed to be Azure's 'Gible'. Azure commanded, "Now!"
*Crack*
The 'Gible' didn't move to dodge. Instead, its form wavered like a heat haze. The illusion shattered in a cascade of black and purple pixels, revealing the sleek, canine form of the Hisuian Zoura.
Its fur was white, silvery-grey, and its eyes glowed with a spectral light. The [Spell Tag] was still draped around its neck.
The Solar Beam passed right through its body as if it were smoke. Pearl gasped from the stands, leaning forward, "It was an illusion!"
Diamond murmured, rubbing his chin, "A Ghost-type move… Illusion. Clever."
Gardenia's eyes widened as she exclaimed, "A Zoura? Then…"
Azure confirmed as he continued his attack, "That's right! Zoura, use Torment on Cherrim! Rhyhorn, Dig!"
Before Cherrim could even process the failed attack, the newly revealed Zoura vanished in a blur of motion, reappearing right in front of the Sunshine Form Pokémon. A wave of dark, discordant energy washed over Cherrim, causing it to cry out in confusion and frustration. It was now tormented, unable to use the same move twice in a row.
*Rmbl*
At the same time, the colossal Rhyhorn burrowed underground with a tremendous grinding sound, disappearing. Gardenia ordered, trying to regain her footing, "Ninetales, watch the ground! Cherrim, try to compose yourself and use Growth!"
The Cherrim, shaking off the Torment, began to channel energy. Its body glowed as its Attack and Special Attack rose sharply.
But the moment was lost. Azure's voice cut through the air like a blade. "Now, Rhyhorn! Strong Style Bulldoze from beneath Ninetales!"
*RMBL*
The ground directly beneath Ninetales erupted. Alpha Rhyhorn surged from the earth, its immense weight and power churning the floor into a shaking, destabilizing mess. The attack slammed into Ninetales, who yelped as the tremors rocked its body, its speed plummeting.
Gardenia cried out, "Ninetales!"
Azure pressed his advantage without mercy, commanding, "Zoura, Phantom Force into Knock Off on Cherrim!"
The Zoura dissolved into a thousand shadowy motes, becoming intangible. It shot across the field, phasing through any obstacles, before coalescing directly behind the vulnerable Cherrim.
*SMACK*
It rematerialized, slashing with spectral claws. The impact was brutal. Cherrim was thrown across the field, its Sunshine Form flickering violently.
It crashed to the ground, the [Miracle Seed] rolling from its grasp, and reverted to its closed, Overcast Form before fading into the light of its recalled Poké Ball.
One of Gardenia's Pokémon was down. Gardenia said sternly, her voice tight with tension, "Cherrim, return!"
She took a deep breath, her fighting spirit undimmed as she declared, "You're incredible! But we're not done yet!"
Gardenia grinned, tossing another Poké Ball as she confidently declared, "As my show of thanks for showing two new Grass Types in Sinnoh, I'll bring one out to party!! Lilligant, join the sun party!"
*Pop*
A Hisuian Lilligant appeared, its long, elegant legs planted firmly. It held an item, a [Muscle Band], promising to boost the power of its physical attacks. Its eyes glowed with a fierce energy.
*SMACK*
Upon entry, it got hit by the stealth rocks, flinching from the pain. Azure saw the move coming before it was even announced. The harsh sunlight was still blazing, and this Lilligant had a purpose.
He muttered under his breath as he analyzed Lilligant, "Chlorophyll, judging by the item or Leaf Guard. Two abilities that suit under Harsh Sunlight… Either way, both abilities are going to be a pain…"
Gardenia didn't waste a second. She grinned as she commanded, "Ninetales, back Lilligant up! Lilligant Ingrain, now!"
*Swoooosh*
But it was H-Lilligant that moved first. It was a blur of green and white.
Seeing this Azure's eyes hardened as he thought, 'Chlorophyll it is. Its speed is doubled during the – What the heck?!'
*SHWIP*
*SHWIP*
Its hands glowed with a soft brown light, and it slammed them into the ground. Thick, pulsating roots erupted from the stone floor, snaking rapidly towards Azure's Pokémon, surprising everyone.
Diamond shouted from the stands, "What?!"
Azure's eyes widened. He had expected an attack, not a trapping move from Ingrain. He roared worriedly, "Rhyhorn, Zoura, move!"
It was too late. The roots were unnaturally fast.
*CRUNCH*
They wrapped around Rhyhorn's thick legs and Zoura's slender body, binding them tight. The vines pulsed, draining their energy slightly and, more importantly, holding them in place. Pearl cried out, "No way! They're trapped!"
Gardenia commanded, her voice losing its cheerful edge and gaining the sharpness of a true tactician, "Now! Solar Beam, full power!"
*SHIII*
Ninetales and H-Lilligant both took a moment to gather energy. The harsh sun accelerated the process, the light coalescing into brilliant, searing beams of green and yellow energy in their mouths. The two beams, amplified by the sun, shot forward like lances of pure sunlight…
*PEW*
Azure grits his teeth. A direct hit would be devastating. He had one chance, trusting his instincts, roared, "Rhyhorn! Zoura! Don't take it, redirect it! Rhyhorn, Strong Style Bulldoze! Zoura, Strong Style Shadow Ball on the roots!"
It was a desperate gambit. Rhyhorn, trapped and roaring in frustration, stomped the ground with all its might!
*BOOM*
*BOOM*
A shockwave of earth and force—the Bulldoze—erupted, not at the attackers, but at the floor directly beneath them, aiming to disrupt their footing. Simultaneously, Zoura's body was enveloped in a sickly purple aura, and it launched a sphere of ghostly energy not at the Pokémon but at the thick Ingrain roots holding them.
The Solar Beams slammed into them…
*CRACK*
*THOOOOOM*
The sound was deafening. A colossal explosion of light and heat engulfed Azure's side of the field, sending a wave of hot air over the spectators.
Platinum watched, her hands gripping the railing, her expression unreadable, but her knuckles white. When the light faded, the scene was grim…
*THUD*
Azure's Alpha Rhyhorn lay on its side, eyes spiraling, defeated. Its [Leftovers] had been no match for that onslaught. Beside it, the Illusion had faded from Zoura, revealing the small, fox Pokémon, also unconscious.
But on the other side, Gardenia's Ninetales was panting heavily, its fur singed and its legs buckled. The Bulldoze had connected at the last possible second, a parting shot that had drained its speed and sapped just enough of its energy to knock it out…
*Thud*
It slumped to the ground and fainted. Gardenia breathed, a look of genuine respect in her eyes, "Wow... To think you'd use a parting shot like that... You took down my Ninetales even while being hit by a Solar Beam. That's some incredible battle sense!"
Azure recalled his fallen partners. He said calmly, his voice even, "You fought well. Get some good rest."
He looked at the two remaining Poké Balls on his belt. The battle was now 2-on-2, and the sun was still beating down.
Gardenia recalled her Ninetales as she grinned, grabbing her last Poke Ball, "Heh! Now it all comes down to a good old-fashioned 2-on-2 battle! Let's do this! Roserade!"
*Pop*
Revealing her last Pokémon materialized. Roserade, its bouquet-like arms glowing faintly, a shimmering [Life Orb] held delicately in one hand… but upon entry, it was hit by the incoming rocks.
*SMACK*
Roserade flinched from the pain but looked determined to end the battle. Seeing this Azure, took a deep breath and exhaled.
He grabbed the last two and grinned as his voice was a sharp command, hurling his Poke Balls into the air, "Elekid, Magby, show them your fire!"
*Pop*
On Azure's side, two small, energetic Pokémon appeared. Elekid, crackled with nascent electricity, a [Magnet] attached to its belt amplifying its power. Beside it, Magby let out a series of coughs, tiny embers puffing from its mouth, its small body radiating heat from the [Charcoal] it clutched.
But seeing Azure's last two Pokémon caused all eyes to widen. Diamond exclaimed, "A Magby and an Elekid?! What can they possibly do against that lineup?"
Platinum mumbled to herself, surprised, "Baby Pokémon? Wouldn't his Riolu, Togetic, or even Monferno have been better?"
Pearl blurted out, "Nah, my man gonna get clap."
Gardenia, however, showed no such surprise. Instead, a spark of genuine excitement lit up her face exclaimed, "Oho! The pre-evolved forms! You believe in the raw potential within a Pokémon, not just its final form! I like that! It shows a deep understanding of nature!"
On the stands, Pikachu let out a confident "Pika-pi! (Of course he does!)"
Eevee, next to Pikachu, stirred, letting out a soft cry, "Ee? (Truly, he believes in the little one's potential. Time to see it.)"
The Pichu (Mew) simply watched, its eyes gleaming as it cried out, "Pi! (Good luck, you two! Knock them flat!)"
With that, the battle began anew. Gardenia followed up immediately, commanding, "Vine Whip, double strike!"
*WHIP*
Roserade's vines snapped forward, aiming to lash out at the small targets. But Azure was already moving.
Azure commanded, his voice sharp, "MAGBY!"
Magby didn't flinch. It waited as Azure finished, "Protect!"
*CLANG*
A shimmering, translucent green barrier erupted in front of the two baby Pokémon just as the vines slammed into it. The barrier rippled but held firm.
Diamond cheered from the stands, leaning forward, "Incredible timing! He read that move perfectly!"
Azure ordered, "Now, Elekid! Close the gap! Quick Attack!"
*Zoooom*
Elekid vanished. It moved in a blur of yellow, crossing the distance before Roserade could recoil its vines.
*SLAM*
Elekid slammed into the Rose Pokémon, knocking it back a step. Gardenia commanded, "Lilligant, help Roserade! Petal Blizzard!"
*Wooosh*
The Hisuian Lilligant spun on one foot, unleashing a vortex of razor-sharp petals that whipped toward both Elekid and Magby. But Azure countered, "Elekid, Detect! Magby, Confuse Ray!"
*Wooosh*
Elekid skidded to a halt, striking a defensive pose. The blizzard of petals swirled around him harmlessly, unable to penetrate the evasion boost.
*FLASH*
Meanwhile, Magby opened its mouth and fired a spiraling wave of disorienting, purple light directly at the advancing Lilligant. Gardenia yelled, "Watch out, Lilligant! Dodge it!"
H-Lilligant was fast—boosted by the harsh sunlight and its Chlorophyll ability—but the Confuse Ray was wide. It clipped the Grass-type's shoulder. H-Lilligant wobbled, its eyes spinning as the confusion status took hold.
Azure pressed the advantage, commanding, "Now is our chance! Elekid, Thunder Wave on Roserade! Magby, Screech on Lilligant!"
*ZZZZZT*
Elekid thrust its arms forward, unleashing a jagged bolt of yellow paralysis energy. Roserade tried to weave around it, but the electricity was too fast. Roserade shuddered, its movements slowing as paralysis locked its muscles.
Magby took a deep breath and let out an ear-piercing, high-frequency shriek, "SCREEEEECH!"
The sound wave hit the confused Lilligant head-on. The noise was deafening, lowering H-Lilligant's defense drastically.
Gardenia knew she was losing momentum. She commanded, her voice tight, "Roserade, shake it off! Sludge Bomb!"
*SPLAT*
Roserade, fighting through the paralysis, fired a glob of purple, viscous sludge. It splattered toward Magby.
Azure called, "Barrier!"
*CLANG*
Magby crossed its arms, erecting a psychic wall. Barrier. The sludge hit the wall and slid off, sizzling on the gym floor. The defense boost was vital.
Pearl laughed, watching the baby Pokémon tank hits that would have knocked out fully evolved Pokémon, "You're a fortress! How are you doing this?"
Platinum noted, her eyes glued to the battlefield, "He's training them. Even now, he's treating his Gym Challenge, focusing on improving his own Pokémon. He's maximizing their movesets to cover every weakness...."
Gardenia urged, "Lilligant, snap out of it! Focus Blast!"
*PEW*
H-Lilligant shook its head, fighting the confusion, and thrust its palms forward. A massive sphere of fighting energy hurtled toward Elekid.
Azure ordered, anticipating the attack, "Elekid, Magnet Rise!"
*Zzzzzt*
Elekid's feet lifted off the ground, surrounded by a magnetic field. The Focus Blast passed harmlessly underneath it.
Sensing the impending end of the battle, Azure grinned as he commanded, "Now, Magby! Strong Style Flame Wheel on Lilligant! Elekid, Strong Style Thunder Punch on Roserade! Synchronize!"
This was the combo. Azure raised his hand dramatically...
*SSSSS*
Magby curled into a ball of fire, spinning like a wheel, and rocketed toward the off-balance H-Lilligant…
*ZZZZZT*
At the same time, Elekid charged up electricity, its fist glowing bright yellow, and dove toward the paralyzed Roserade.
Gardenia ordered, "Lilligant, Drain Punch on the fire wheel!"
*KLANG*
Lilligant, still groggy, swung a glowing green fist at the incoming Flame Wheel. The impact sent sparks flying. Lilligant absorbed some health, but Magby's flames burned bright. Because of the [Charcoal] held item, the Fire attack was amplified.
Azure commanded, "Elekid, hit him!"
Gardenia cried, "Roseraaaade!"
*CRACK*
Elekid's Thunder Punch, boosted by the [Magnet] item, connected with Roserade's side. The electric charge exploded.
*BOOOOM*
Roserade was launched backward, slamming into the gym wall with a heavy thud. The [Life Orb] on its body flickered as it drained its own health, but the damage was too much. Roserade slid down the wall and faded into red light as it was recalled.
Gardenia gasped, "Lilligant, watch out!"
Magby, having survived the Drain Punch, landed and immediately pivoted. Azure ordered, "Magby, Strong Style Fire Punch!"
*SSSSS*
H-Lilligant still recovering from its Confusion and Screech defense drop. Magby's fist, burning with intensified flame, struck the Grass-type squarely in the stomach.
*BOOM*
H-Lilligant was blasted backward, colliding with the remnants of the wall where Roserade had fallen. It struggled to rise, but the flames and the exhaustion overwhelmed it. It slumped over, its lights dimming.
The lights in the gym softened. The Drought's effect faded, returning the room to its cool, earthy ambiance.
Azure let out a breath and lowered his arm, praising his Baby Pokémon duo proudly, "Good work, you two. Amazing work."
*SMACK*
Elekid and Magby high-fived, sparks and embers flying between them, before turning to the stands and waving. Pikachu and Eevee hopped down from the railing, sprinting across the field to congratulate their pre-evolved brethren.
Pichu (Mew) squeaked from Azure's jacket, wanting to join in. Platinum, Diamond, and Pearl descended from the stands. Gardenia recalled her fainted Pokémon, a respectful smile on her face as she walked over to him.
Gardenia said calmly, wiping a bead of sweat from her forehead, "That was not a battle I expected to see in my gym. Usually, trainers rely on brute strength or fully evolved champions. You... you fought with tactical precision."
Azure replied, recalling Elekid and Magby into their balls, "I prefer partners that don't underestimate the little guys. They've got as much heart as any Dragonite."
Platinum stepped up, looking at Azure with a newfound respect. She had hired him for his reputation as a legendary trainer, seeing him mostly as insurance for her journey to Mt. Coronet. But watching him battle confirmed the rumors.
Platinum stated, pushing her scarf up, praising Azure's efforts, "Impressive. You defeated a Gym Leader with two pre-evolved forms. Truly awe-inspiring."
Diamond leaned over, scratching his head as he asked curiously, "Hey, Azure? That move set... I've never seen a Magby with Barrier before. Is that a special breed?"
Azure chuckled, patting the Poké Balls on his belt as he replied, "Just good training and a lot of patience. They're part of a bigger family. My team... they're all special."
He felt the warmth of Pichu (Mew) stirring in his jacket again. And this one is the most special of all, he thought to himself.
Gardenia reached into her pocket and produced a small, circular badge case. She opened it and presented a beautiful, green badge shaped like a stylized clover leaf and TM from her pocket as she declared, "This is the Forest Badge and the TM (Grass Knot). You've more than earned it."
Azure took the items as he replied, "Thank you."

Azure shook his head as he said calmly, "Nah. We'll take the day to rest, and then we'll start heading off tomorrow. Oh, right, that reminds."
He turned to Platinum as he asked calmly, with the group moving to the Gym's entrance, "I need you to ask your family to have 3 Bikes prepared for us. I already have my own. The next route 206 down from Eterna City is also called Cycling Route."
