Chapter 11 - The Sky Turns Red

The cracks in the sky splits wider, streaks of crimson lighting fall like spears, striking the forest and corrupting the groves and glades. One bolt stuck too close, destroying part of the Thornlings burrows, Lucky arrived just in time to save their young. "I can't protect everyone," she said as she was trembling with guilt. "No" said the Thornling chief, "but you make others want to protect. That's stronger than power." Lucky wept that night, not because of weakness but because she cared, and that was her greatest strength. One of the lightning strikes hit and made a crater, and from that crater rose a figure wreathed in Shadowfire. It was Umbrael, he didn't attack yet.

Instead, he spoke "do you know what I was before I fell? I was a child like you. Full of hope and then crashed by the truth." Lucky faced him calmly, "then let me show you that truth didn't win. I did." Umbrael vanished, but he left behind a warning, "When we meet next, your light will die with the stars." Needed guidance, Lucky visited the moonpool, a sacred lake where past queens once spoke with the spirits. She sang a song of sorrow and hope, and the water answered. Reflections of every life she'd touched danced across its surface. Then Queen Lumina appeared in the water's heart. "you've done what I could not, you gave them faith. Now give them victory." Said Lumina her image faded, but her blessing lingered, glowing over Lucky like silver armor.

The corruption began to infect Lucky Small veins of darkness coiled beneath her skin. Her power faltered, her thoughts twisted, Marla discovered a cure, the final flame, an unformed spark buried in Ember's ancestral nest. But to claim it, Lucky had to face her greatest fear, in a vision forged by her flame she watched herself fail, wings broken, friends lost, forest burning. She stood tall, reached onto the fire and accepted it all, pain, fear, doubt. The darkness fled and the mark of the final flame etched itself on her back, a glowing phoenix in flight. In the hidden glade, an ancient fairy emerged from hiding, her name was Solenya, last of the original Starborn. She had stayed silent, believing the world wasn't ready, Lucky challenged her.

"If I can rise, so can others. Don't hide from your legacy, use it." Solenya bowed her head, "Then I will stand beside you. As an equal, as family." Together, they lit the sky with a beacon that called every corner of the forest.
