Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The World, the Rules, and Several Uncomfortable Truths

The World, the Rules, and Several Uncomfortable Truths

Luminel fluttered a little higher into the warm golden light of the dojo, his small wings catching the glow of the hanging lanterns each time they moved. Despite being scarcely larger than some of the Juvenile Aetherkin gathered around him, he had somehow developed the irritating ability to make the entire room feel as though it belonged to him. The children sat cross-legged across the polished wooden floor with their partners beside them, bowls and plates from dinner having been cleared away, while Caelan sat slightly farther back with Sparky near his knee. Nobody was particularly eager to begin another lecture after spending several days being chased through deserts, fired out of pyramids and lied to by homicidal machines, but Luminel's expression had changed enough that even Airi stopped whispering to Flora. The usual smugness remained, naturally. It seemed to be permanently attached to him. But underneath it was something older and considerably more serious.

"I know," Luminel began, lowering his spear across his lap, "that you've already heard pieces of what is happening. Bits from Kairo. Bits from creatures you've met. Bits you've guessed yourselves."

Shun immediately looked as though he wanted to point out that some of his guesses were extremely well supported.

Luminel looked directly at him.

"No."

Shun closed his mouth.

Airi covered a laugh.

Luminel continued.

"The problem with pieces is that people begin filling in the missing parts themselves, and people are very talented at filling missing spaces with complete nonsense. So tonight we start with the foundation."

The lantern flames shifted.

"How this world works. Why you're here. And why the problems you've encountered so far are smaller than the one waiting behind them."

Daichi raised one hand slowly.

"Can we go back to the part where you called Eidon a smaller problem?"

"No."

"Wonderful."

Luminel lifted his spear.

Light gathered around its tip.

The air above him rippled.

An image appeared.

Not a picture exactly, nor a projection like Elder Kairo's messages. It hung in the air with depth and movement, a miniature landscape suspended above the floor. Stars appeared first. Then worlds. Some blue and green. Some red. Some surrounded by rings. Others containing continents that seemed to float in empty sky. Threads of pale light stretched between them.

"The universe you came from," Luminel said, looking toward the children, "is not the only universe."

Most of the group stared.

Caelan did not.

Luminel noticed.

"You already knew that."

Caelan nodded.

"My home has contact with other worlds."

Shun's head snapped around.

"You've never mentioned that."

"It never came up."

Shun stared at him with profound personal betrayal.

Caelan shrugged.

Luminel carried on before Shun could begin an interrogation.

"This world touches many universes. Not constantly. Not equally. But enough."

More threads appeared.

"The easiest way to describe this place is as a mirror."

The image shifted.

Reflections appeared within the threads.

A warrior.

A beast.

A great ship.

A dragon.

A king standing before an army.

Then each reflection blurred.

"But it does not simply copy what it sees."

Luminel tapped his spear against the floor.

The images changed again.

"Stories leave marks. Fame leaves marks. Fear, admiration, worship, hatred—anything powerful enough to carry the memory of a person, creature or idea across enough minds can create an echo."

Sparky tilted his head.

"An echo?"

"A legend."

The figure of the dragon dissolved into light.

From that light emerged a much smaller creature.

Young.

Different.

But unmistakably shaped by the thing that came before.

"This world catches those echoes."

Another appeared.

Then another.

"And sometimes, from them, it gives birth to Aetherkin."

Caelan's attention sharpened slightly.

He said nothing.

Luminel continued.

"That does not mean an Aetherkin is the same being as whatever legend influenced its birth. An echo is not the voice that made it."

The image vanished.

"An Aetherkin lives its own life. Makes its own choices. Develops differently. Evolves differently."

Sparky looked thoughtful.

Caelan remained quiet.

For him, the existence of other universes was ordinary enough.

A world that listened to their legends and produced living beings from them was considerably less ordinary.

Luminel's illusion shifted again.

Two clocks appeared.

One moved normally.

The other spun at a ridiculous speed.

"The worlds are also not always synchronized."

Haruto frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"Time."

Luminel pointed toward the slower clock.

"Relative to your home universe, the region of this world you're currently travelling through is moving much faster."

"How much faster?" Shun asked.

Luminel glanced at him.

"For roughly every minute that passes in your world..."

The other clock raced through an entire day.

"...about a day passes here."

Nobody spoke.

Then Airi blinked.

"Wait."

Daichi's face went pale.

"A day?"

Yuto stared at Haruto.

"So if we've been here for weeks—"

"Only a small amount of time has passed at home," Shun finished, already doing calculations in his head.

Haruto's shoulders loosened slightly.

Caelan looked toward Luminel.

"And my universe?"

"Different connection. Different rate."

That answer clearly annoyed Shun because it introduced an entirely new set of calculations.

Luminel wisely moved on.

"Now, Aetherkin."

The illusion changed again.

Tiny lights appeared.

They gathered.

Small creatures emerged.

Some grew.

Some fought.

Some evolved.

Some died.

When one fell, its body broke apart into streams of luminous essence.

The children had already seen this happen.

What followed was new.

The scattered light did not simply vanish.

It travelled.

Flowed.

Gathered elsewhere.

A small sphere formed.

Then cracked.

A newborn creature crawled out.

Yuto leaned forward.

"They come back?"

"Usually."

Luminel's voice softened.

"Death is part of the cycle here. When an Aetherkin dies, its essence returns to the world. Given time, that essence gathers again and produces new life."

Airi looked at Flora.

"So if Flora..."

She stopped.

Flora reached up and touched her hand.

Luminel nodded.

"Rebirth does not necessarily restore every memory or every detail of the life before it. Do not mistake rebirth for nothing being lost."

Airi's expression became more serious.

"But under normal circumstances, death is not complete annihilation."

The images shifted.

One Aetherkin defeated another.

Essence flowed into the victor.

"Growth follows the same law."

Caelan watched.

"Absorption."

Luminel nodded.

"Exactly."

Sparky looked at Caelan.

Caelan looked back.

That explained the Barkmaws.

Luminel continued.

"Aetherkin can grow from many sources. Ambient essence. Certain foods. Minerals. places saturated with power. Training. Experience. But defeating another Aetherkin and absorbing part of the released essence is one of the fastest methods."

Daichi frowned.

"Wouldn't that make everyone constantly fight everyone?"

Luminel's spear bounced gently off the top of his head.

Bonk.

"Ow!"

"Don't interrupt."

"You could've just answered!"

"I was going to."

Luminel returned to the illusion.

"In the earliest ages, yes."

The peaceful landscape disappeared.

A wild world replaced it.

Predators hunted one another.

Territories changed constantly.

Settlements barely existed.

Evolution happened violently.

"It was chaos."

More creatures appeared.

Stronger ones.

Older ones.

"Growth rewarded conflict. Conflict produced stronger Aetherkin. Stronger Aetherkin produced more conflict."

Renji folded his arms.

"So what changed?"

Luminel's expression became more solemn.

The illusion darkened.

Then an enormous structure appeared in the air.

Not a creature.

Not quite a machine.

It resembled an impossible archive stretching upward and downward at once, countless chambers of light arranged around a vast central core while luminous roots and branches reached across the world.

"The Grand Archive."

Shun stared.

"What is it?"

"That depends on who you ask."

The image rotated slowly.

"Some call it the ruler of this world. Some call it its caretaker. Some believe it is simply the oldest intelligence still functioning."

"Is it alive?" Misaki asked.

Luminel hesitated.

"Not the way you mean."

That answer did not comfort anyone.

"It observes. Records. Calculates. Preserves the larger systems of the world."

Caelan watched the enormous image.

"So it stopped the fighting."

"Not exactly."

Luminel smiled faintly.

"It decided endless uncontrolled fighting was no longer useful."

The Archive brightened.

Several figures appeared beneath it.

Armoured warriors.

Ancient dragons.

Beasts surrounded by elemental power.

"The Grand Archive empowered guardians."

The images multiplied.

"The Crowned Wardens. The Four Sovereigns. The Four Sacred Dragons. Others as well."

Each moved into a different region.

The fighting diminished.

Settlements grew.

Roads appeared.

Cities rose.

"Civilization."

Airi tilted her head.

"So the Archive is good."

Luminel looked at her.

"No."

Airi blinked.

"It's evil?"

"No."

"That's very unhelpful."

"Good and evil are useful words when you're discussing people. The Grand Archive is..."

He paused.

"...larger than that."

Renji looked unimpressed.

"That sounds like something people say immediately before explaining why something terrible is technically necessary."

Luminel pointed his spear at him.

"You're learning."

The illusion changed.

Cities burned.

Regions collapsed.

Then rebuilt.

Different creatures rose.

Different kingdoms formed.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Misaki's expression tightened.

"What is that?"

"A cycle."

Luminel's voice had lost its humor entirely.

"This world has suffered destruction before."

Another civilization disappeared.

"It will suffer destruction again."

Haruto stared at the burning image.

"The Archive lets that happen?"

"Nobody knows what the Grand Archive wants."

Luminel hovered lower.

"Perhaps destruction serves a purpose. Perhaps civilizations grow stagnant. Perhaps each collapse allows the world to rebuild stronger."

The next image showed a new city rising where the old one had fallen, more advanced than before.

"Each age has produced stronger Aetherkin. More complex societies. New evolutionary paths."

Shun watched intently.

"So the disasters are intentional?"

"I said nobody knows."

The spear pointed at him.

"Do not turn uncertainty into an answer simply because you dislike empty spaces."

Shun fell silent.

Luminel sighed.

"There have been beings powerful enough to challenge the cycle."

The Crowned Wardens appeared.

Then other shapes.

Seven enormous dark figures surrounded by different forms of ruin.

"Even the Seven Calamity Lords, creatures remembered for bringing entire regions to their knees, once stopped fighting everyone else long enough to oppose what they believed the Archive was doing."

Daichi swallowed.

"And?"

"They failed."

The image vanished.

The dojo suddenly seemed smaller.

Caelan's eyes remained on the empty air.

"So this Grand Archive is stronger than all of them."

"Or better prepared."

Luminel shrugged.

"It makes little difference to someone standing underneath it."

Haruto's jaw tightened.

"Then why are we involved?"

Luminel looked toward him.

"Because the Grand Archive does not solve every crisis."

A new image appeared.

This one was darker.

A ruined temple stood beneath a black sky.

Figures gathered around it.

Aetherkin.

Dozens.

Some hooded.

Some monstrous.

All surrounding a great circular structure filled with darkness.

"The Cult of the Last Silence."

Yuto moved closer to Haruto.

"What do they want?"

"Nothing."

Yuto blinked.

Luminel's expression hardened.

"That is the problem."

The image shifted.

A shape began forming inside the circle.

Not fully.

Only an outline.

But even the outline seemed wrong, as though someone had cut a hole in the world and taught it how to stand.

"The cult believes the cycle itself is cruel."

Rebirth.

Growth.

War.

Death.

Rebirth again.

"They do not want a better ruler. They do not want a new age."

The darkness widened.

"They want the cycle to end."

Misaki stared.

"How?"

"They are trying to summon something known as the Nullborn."

The name settled unpleasantly over the room.

Luminel continued.

"It is not death."

Aetherkin dissolved in the illusion.

Ordinarily their essence would have flowed away.

This time the light touched the darkness.

And disappeared.

Completely.

"It is erasure."

Airi's hand tightened around Flora.

"No rebirth?"

"No."

"No essence?"

"No."

"Nothing?"

Luminel nodded.

"Nothing."

Nobody spoke.

"If the Nullborn fully enters this world, the damage will not stop here."

Threads connecting the worlds reappeared.

Darkness spread along them.

"This place is connected to too many universes. Destroy the foundations badly enough and the collapse can travel through those connections."

Haruto's face hardened.

"To our world."

"Yes."

Caelan's gaze narrowed.

"And others."

Luminel looked at him.

"Yes."

The room went still.

Even Sparky seemed to understand enough to stop fidgeting.

Haruto clenched his fists.

"What are we supposed to do against something like that?"

The question carried more frustration than fear.

After Eidon.

After Gravefang.

After Cipheron.

Now this.

"What exactly can we do?"

Luminel struck the floor with the butt of his spear.

CRACK.

Several children jumped.

"First, stop assuming I explained this so you could sit there looking miserable."

Airi blinked.

Luminel floated higher.

"If there were no way to win, I would have served dessert and spared everyone the lecture."

Daichi glanced toward the dining room.

"There was dessert?"

"Focus."

Daichi looked genuinely wounded.

Luminel swept his spear across the group.

"The Grand Archive rarely intervenes directly."

Light gathered around the children's Resonance Linkers.

"But it has already given you tools."

Haruto looked down.

His Linker glowed.

"You."

Luminel pointed directly at him.

"The virtue tied to you is Courage."

Haruto froze.

Ryu raised his little head beside him.

"Courage is not being fearless."

Luminel's voice softened.

"If it were, you would be doing terribly."

Airi snorted.

Haruto gave her an offended look.

"But fear does not decide what courage is."

Luminel continued.

"Acting despite fear does."

Haruto looked at Ryu.

The little orange T-rex looked back.

"Your mistake with Gravefang does not prove that you lack Courage. Your fear afterward does not prove it either."

The light around Haruto's Linker grew brighter.

"The question is what you do when that fear matters."

Haruto said nothing.

Luminel turned.

"Daichi."

Daichi straightened so quickly his glasses nearly slipped.

"The virtue tied to you is Reliability."

Daichi pointed at himself.

"Me?"

"No, the cactus behind you."

Daichi looked behind him automatically.

Airi burst out laughing.

"There isn't a cactus!"

"I know."

Luminel sighed.

"Yes. You."

His tone became serious again.

"You worry. You question. You complain."

Daichi looked mildly offended.

"But when someone needs you, you remain."

His partner looked up proudly.

"Reliability isn't never being afraid something will go wrong."

Luminel smiled faintly.

"It's being there when it does."

Then his gaze moved to Airi.

She immediately sat straighter.

"You've already found yours."

The green mark of Sincerity glimmered faintly in her Resonance Linker.

Airi looked down at it.

"Sincerity is not saying every thought that enters your head."

Renji muttered, "Good."

Airi elbowed him.

"It is refusing to become someone false simply because honesty is inconvenient."

Flora leaned against her.

Luminel moved his spear.

Light briefly touched each of the others.

"Renji. Friendship."

Renji's expression changed.

"Misaki. Compassion."

Misaki looked toward Sakura.

"Shun. Knowledge."

Shun's eyes widened with immediate interest.

Luminel pointed the spear at him.

"Knowledge, not knowing everything."

Shun looked disappointed.

"Yuto. Hope."

Yuto blinked.

Luminel lowered his weapon.

"These virtues are not prizes for becoming perfect."

The room quieted again.

"They are already part of you."

He looked around the group.

"The Sigils respond because these qualities exist strongly enough within you to shape your partners."

Airi looked at her Linker.

"So we don't have to become different people?"

"No."

Luminel's mouth twitched.

"Some improvements would be welcome."

Renji smiled.

Airi threw a cushion at Luminel.

He moved aside without even looking.

"But you do need to understand yourselves."

His expression became serious again.

"Accepting a virtue is not the same as proving it."

The glowing marks faded.

"When your actions truly align with what your Sigil represents, the resonance between you and your partner deepens."

Ryu looked at Haruto.

Flora looked at Airi.

Tesla had become unusually attentive beside Shun.

"That resonance affects evolution."

Haruto's eyes sharpened.

"So if I awaken Courage properly..."

"Ryu gains access to evolutionary possibilities he cannot reach through raw energy alone."

Haruto looked at him.

"The right evolution?"

Luminel did not answer immediately.

Then:

"A better question."

Haruto waited.

"An evolution that reflects what both of you have become."

That seemed to settle somewhere deeper than Haruto expected.

Renji leaned forward.

"So if all of us awaken these virtues, our partners become strong enough to fight the cult?"

"Potentially."

Renji frowned.

"That's not as comforting as 'yes.'"

"Reality rarely arranges itself for comfort."

Luminel's gaze moved across them.

"Your bonds create possibilities that ordinary Aetherkin cannot reach easily."

Shun looked fascinated again.

"So we're part of some system created by the Grand Archive?"

"Partly."

"Chosen deliberately?"

"Yes."

"Then are we just following some program?"

Luminel shook his head.

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"You are variables."

He pointed toward the Linkers.

"The Archive can create tools. It can establish conditions. It can open a door."

His spear moved toward Haruto.

"It cannot decide whether you walk through."

Then toward Airi.

"It cannot choose what you say."

Renji.

"Whom you trust."

Misaki.

"Whom you protect."

Shun.

"What you learn."

Yuto.

"What you continue believing when everything looks hopeless."

Finally the spear lowered.

"That is why humans are useful."

Airi frowned.

"Useful?"

Luminel smiled.

"Unpredictable."

Caelan had been silent for a long time.

Now he spoke.

"So this world creates living beings from legends, allows them to develop beyond those legends, and then introduces humans specifically because their choices create evolutionary outcomes the world cannot predict."

Luminel looked toward him.

"Good."

Caelan glanced at Sparky.

Sparky looked back.

"Strange world."

"Very."

Sparky smiled.

"I like it."

Caelan shrugged.

"Of course you do."

Luminel fluttered upward again.

"Which brings us to the part everyone is going to dislike."

A collective groan passed through the room.

"Training."

Caelan looked mildly more interested.

Sparky immediately straightened.

Luminel noticed both.

"Not you."

Sparky's ears drooped.

"I meant him."

He pointed at Caelan.

Caelan raised an eyebrow.

"You already know how to fight."

"Correct."

"That does not mean you know how to fight here."

Caelan's expression changed slightly.

Luminel smiled.

"There it is."

Caelan said nothing.

Luminel turned back toward the others.

"Until now, most of you have survived because your opponents were poorly trained, badly coordinated, weaker than they should have been, or stupid."

Renji looked toward the door.

"Eidon wasn't."

"No."

"Cipheron wasn't."

"No."

"Gorgonbeak wasn't."

"Not particularly."

Luminel folded his arms.

"And you noticed how much worse those fights became."

Nobody argued.

"You have relied heavily on evolution."

Ryu shifted beside Haruto.

"Evolution gives power."

Luminel struck the floor once.

"Power is not skill."

The room trembled.

"An Adult who fights intelligently can defeat an Adult who has twice its strength."

His spear swept toward the partners.

"Positioning. Timing. Reactions. Accuracy. Coordination. Understanding your own abilities."

He looked toward the children.

"And you."

Several immediately appeared concerned.

"You are not spectators."

Airi raised her hand.

"What exactly does that mean?"

"It means standing behind your partner shouting encouragement is not a complete battle strategy."

Airi slowly lowered her hand.

Luminel lifted his spear.

The dojo floor rumbled.

Everyone scrambled backward.

A circular section of wood sank.

Stone rose in its place.

Within moments, a broad training arena had formed at the centre of the room, smooth stone surrounded by glowing symbols.

Sparky's eyes widened.

Caelan leaned slightly forward.

Luminel pointed toward the arena.

"Your partners will train their bodies."

Images appeared above it.

Strength.

Speed.

Defence.

Accuracy.

Endurance.

Reaction.

"Those qualities can all be improved."

Shun was already reaching for his laptop.

Luminel sighed.

"Your Resonance Linkers can measure much of it."

That stopped Shun from opening the laptop.

The Linkers around the room illuminated.

"They are not merely identification devices."

Luminel continued.

"They are bridges."

A thread of light appeared between Haruto and Ryu.

Then between each child and partner.

"Your intent travels through them."

The threads brightened.

"So does emotional resonance."

Airi's green Sigil shimmered.

"The better you understand the link, the more effectively you can support your partner."

Misaki studied hers.

"Even without a Virtue Sigil?"

"Yes."

Luminel nodded.

"A Sigil strengthens and focuses what is already there. It is not the beginning of the bond."

Sparky looked toward Caelan.

"We don't have one."

Luminel glanced at them.

"No."

Sparky's ears lowered.

"But your situation is different."

Sparky immediately perked up again.

Caelan looked toward Luminel.

Luminel did not elaborate.

"Later."

Caelan accepted that without argument.

Shun did not.

"What does different mean?"

"Later."

"Different how?"

"Shun."

"Yes?"

"Be quiet."

Airi laughed again.

Luminel flew to the centre of the newly formed arena.

"Your virtues are yours to discover."

He struck his spear against the stone.

"You will learn what they mean by living them."

Another strike.

"But fighting?"

The symbols around the arena ignited.

A faint pressure rolled through the dojo.

"That I can teach."

Haruto slowly stood.

Ryu stood with him.

Renji followed.

Then Misaki.

Shun.

Airi.

Daichi.

Yuto.

One by one, their partners rose beside them.

Caelan remained seated for another second.

Sparky looked at him.

"You promised you'd train me."

Caelan sighed.

"I did."

Sparky grinned.

Caelan stood.

Luminel watched the entire group gather around the arena, and for the first time that evening the little warrior looked genuinely pleased.

Then he smiled.

It was not a comforting smile.

"Good."

Daichi immediately looked nervous.

Luminel twirled his spear.

"Tomorrow morning, we find out how many bad habits you've managed to collect."

The children looked at one another.

Caelan glanced at Sparky.

Sparky's enthusiasm wavered slightly.

Airi raised a cautious hand.

"How early tomorrow morning?"

Luminel's smile widened.

"Very."

A groan rolled through the dojo.

And with that, the first lesson ended.
