Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: What Real Power Looks Like

Weber looked at Charlotte when he was done packing his go-bag.

Charlotte had just remained quiet, looking out the window with her arms folded.

Weber cleared his throat, "You really don't have to follow me. But with Foresight in you, you can't live normally without supervision."

Charlotte stood up and brought out her own go-bag from under the bed, and Weber's eyebrows were raised.

"Then we leave for Fantasia." Charlotte said and walked out.

Gabrielle appeared next to Weber as he watched Charlotte leave.

"Here to insult me?" Weber said and began walking.

Gabrielle floated next to him and thought for some moments, "I am!"

She flew in front of him, "Have you ever thought of practicing with the Abyss's powers?"

Andrej manifested, "Gabrielle has a point. Due to you're already strong, training will surely improve you."

Weber waved them aside as he walked out of the motel.

"From my memories, the Abyss is usually instinctual. It's not like a muscle that continuous work strengthens. It's about using it at the right time and place in the right way."

Weber sighed and looked up, recalling the times he and Josh studied at night, a time before Celestia increased its attack on Fantasia.

"Besides, I need to get stronger. Stronger than Captains. Stronger than Sages." Weber said, clenching his fists.

Charlotte turned back and noticed that it looked like Weber was talking to himself, because he wasn't holding a phone or using ear pods.

"Who are you talking to?" Charlotte asked, looking around.

"Show yourselves," Weber said.

Charlotte looked at him in askance, then ashened as Gabrielle and Andrej appeared with a ghostly aura, and the air became suffocating as they hovered above Charlotte and Weber.

A scream escaped from Charlotte's throat, and she held onto Weber, her legs shaky.

Weber sighed, "Gabrielle, Andrej, can you two tone down the scariness?"

Andrej shrugged, "This is the lowest we're at," then his white irises that seemed endless looked at Charlotte, and his crisp voice echoed in her ears.

"I hope we're not spooking you. We are good friends of Wraith Keeper Weber," Andrej said, and Charlotte's eyes widened when she saw Gabrielle vanish.

"Hello," Gabrielle said behind and close to Charlotte's ear, which made her clutch her chest as her heart raced.

Weber smacked his head with his hand, "What's wrong with you?"

Gabrielle chuckled, "I'm trying to see if her power works with emotions like fear to bring out Foresight, but I guess not."

Weber thought over her words and considered how they had some truth.

Knowing if her powers worked with emotions could predict if they'd be useful in battle.

If they were only dependent on emotions, then she's of no use, but otherwise, she could be of great help.

Weber brought out some cash and sighed, "I don't think getting out of Vespera will be possible right now. It's too expensive, and the money I have is worth just a day's meal."

Andrej looked at Charlotte, "You said you used to work at the private hotel you thought was normal, but it turned out to be where Foresight was kept?"

Charlotte nodded affirmatively, "The place, however, has been shut down due to damages caused by the clash between Captain Esther and Weber."

Charlotte sighed, as the job she thought was normal turned out to be a place where people were being tortured to give a false "peace" to Vespera.

After hours of walking and pausing, they reached the house Weber had bought for himself and Ariel years ago.

Weber touched the walls, and a tear rolled down his eye.

"This is the place," he said, barely a whisper.

Charlotte looked around the house, noting its paint, roof, and stained glass windows of higher quality than usual buildings in the area.

Which made her wonder what brought Weber here.

A tall entity of gray aura appeared before Weber.

"Welcome home, Wraith Keeper," it said, having seen Weber stiffen upon seeing it.

Weber held up his fists, ready to fight, then dropped his guard when he saw that the Wraith had white irises like he did, which showed that the wraith was his.

"That's odd, I don't remember contracting with you." He said and looked it over.

He sensed enormous amounts of power flowing from it, and it matched his power of the Abyss.

"I don't have the power to strengthen any of my ghosts so much... So how is this possible?"

The figure crossed its arms, "As you sealed your memories, you also sealed your potential."

Thanks to the power he had from the Abyss, he no longer had fear of paranormal. But he couldn't help but feel awe and fear at how it alone was strong enough to defeat the dozens of spectres he had—even strengthened with Grasp of the Unmourned.

"You made me the guardian of this house. I was actually your weakest wraith," the ghost remarked.

Weber furrowed his brows, "So, what did I do with much more powerful wraiths?"

Charlotte looked at Weber and at the wall he was talking to, but couldn't see the ghost. She noticed that Andrej and Gabrielle had their eyes fixed on whatever Weber was talking to.

Weber got on his knees and slammed the floor, "If only I had such power like then, I'd destroy all of Celestia and Shinto!"

The ghost patted Weber, "I said you sealed away your potential, not removed it."

"Another ghost?" Charlotte asked, and this time Weber didn't have a memory flashback but a vision.

As the ghost appeared to show itself to Charlotte, its presence alone nearly killed her, then the vision blurred before ending.

Weber stretched out his hand to stop the guardian from appearing, "Don't show yourself! Or she'll die!"

The guardian looked at Charlotte and its eyes widened, "What is Foresight doing inside a human..."

Weber snapped his fingers, "Hey! Don't even think of hurting her!"

The guardian shrugged and did the visual equivalent of rolling its eyes.

"Would you like to see when you were at full power?" the guardian asked.

Weber squinted at it, "As for my ghosts, I don't think any are capable of doing such." He said, and he and the guardian looked at Andrej and Gabrielle.

"If these two were to fight the battles your powerful Wraiths in the past fought, they'd die a second time." After saying that, Gabrielle floated towards it, but Andrej held her back.

"Aren't you disturbed that there's a way we can die again?" Andrej asked, and Gabrielle grumbled.

The guardian snapped its fingers, and smoke appeared on the floor. Even Charlotte saw it as the room turned black.

The ground was red, and the surroundings were a never-ending darkness, and in front of them, far off, was space.

Weber looked around and gaped, "Where is—"

"This is space." The guardian finished.

Then they all began hearing war cries of hundreds of thousands, and even Weber fell on his knees as trumpets were blown.

"Your army is meaningless," Ariel said, floating, and Weber gasped.

"Ariel—"

"Watch closely, this was the worst day of your life," the guardian said, and Weber looked at it.

"Why would you show me such?"

The guardian looked at him with a conviction that made Weber's heart drop, "So even death won't let you forget why you fight."

As it finished speaking, several other people with threatening auras came next to Ariel.

"Erase," Ariel said, and the floor vanished, but a thick smoke hard as rock immediately took its place.

As Charlotte looked closely, her heart sank as she noticed it was billions of tiny ants, dead, forming the ground.

A white meteorite fell from the sky, and the war cries of soldiers grew louder, and the people next to Ariel stiffened.

"He's here—" they said, and a person in an ash jacket, white jeans, and pitch-black skin with white hair and a deep frown appeared.

As he landed, the ground shook, and the figure was enveloped in a gray aura.

The person spoke in a deep and crisp voice that was eloquent, "You waste power. You waste dignity. Thus, you bring your own ruin."

A person in a green aura and cloak walked forward and snapped their fingers, and the war cries that were being heard manifested as armored knights with red eyes.

The pitch-black figure put his hands in his pockets and observed the tens of thousands of warriors.

"Why are you useless?" he asked and knelt on one knee as the green-cloaked figure pointed at Weber, and the army ran towards him.

"Why is this feeling familiar..." Weber said as the black-skinned figure calmly put his palm on the floor as if trying to pick up a fragile egg from the floor.

"Drown in the sorrow of death. Wail of the Abyss." The black-skinned figure said, and a wide gray circle formed on the floor and expanded many meters away from him.

"Wail of Abyss? Is that the Abyss itself again, Ariel?" Weber asked the guardian.

The guardian looked at him, "That's you."

As the guardian was still speaking, two figures a thousand meters tall appeared in black cloaks.

A silver aura enveloped the hands of past Weber, and he patted the feet of the ghosts he summoned.

"Destroy them all," he said, and the titans began walking.

With each swing, hundreds of monstrous knights were destroyed.

Past Weber walked behind them as they cleared the way.

The cloaked figure that summoned them stiffened as all of his knights' attacks were useless.

"He's not fighting at full power... Does that mean he's joking?" he asked Ariel.

Ariel watched the scene with a scowl and spoke in a low tone, "No. He wants us to use all our tricks so he can fight harder."

The cloaked man in green clasped his hands together, and all the knights grew as large as the titans.

Past and present Weber gasped.

"Yeah, that's you, alright." Gabrielle murmured.

Then past Weber smirked, and his eyes shone brighter.

Then his wraiths plummeted to the ground, and as they were about to fade away, Weber stretched out his hand and absorbed them, which made the current Weber furrow his eyebrows because he couldn't do that.

As past Weber was absorbing the wraiths, he was smashed to the ground.

The problem was, Weber didn't wake up.

His whole body was broken and bloodied, and his power turned off.

His hair was back to brown, his skin tanned white, and his white eyes hazel.

The knights stopped their attack, and Ariel walked up to Weber.

She squatted, and the other people with her approached slowly.

Ariel grabbed the hair on Weber's head and lifted his face off the ground, showing no sign of life as he had lost too much blood.

"The only user of the Abyss has been destroyed," she said with her face straight.

Charlotte covered her mouth as she was about to scream.

"Then... How are you alive..." Charlotte whispered.

Weber looked himself over and was sure he had no past of a life-threatening injury.

"I don't know." He said and clenched his fists, looking at Ariel.

"So she's a monster?" he asked, gritting his teeth, and the guardian looked at him.

"Let me ask you something," it said, and Ariel and the others noticed that they began hearing whispers and they ashened.

"There are many reasons you became Wraith Keeper." As the guardian said this, the whispers turned to screams.

Weber looked at his past self, damaged beyond repair, and he nodded at the guardian, then a strong wind began blowing.

Black smoke came out of past Weber's body, and Ariel and the others jumped back.

"Is he still alive?" Ariel asked the green-cloaked man.

He furrowed his eyebrows.

"Not supposed to be possible. Using my skill of making the knights titans made them use power that should get rid of a user of a Great Enigma."

Ariel grabbed his shoulder and her nails dug into his shoulder.

"So what am I looking at?" she asked, and the man shook.

"What happens when you play with death." Past Weber said, hovering over them, clad in a smoky cloak, with chains at his sleeves and waist.

"You might be Wraith Keeper, but I'm sure you can't resurrect." Ariel remarked, clenching fists.

"Not all of us give a damn about the rule books," Weber remarked and slammed his palm.

This time, four skeletons with gray fire erupting from their eyes, clad in black cloaks, appeared and they opened their palms in unison, and scythes appeared.

"Watch closely, Weber," the guardian said to the current Weber, and he looked at it.

"You're about to see how to properly use the Abyss's power."
