Chapter 152 - The Boy in Black

Heaven Dou Imperial Academy – Guest Courtyards (6:00 AM)

The sun had barely begun to rise above the eastern peaks, casting pale golden light across the guest courtyards. Most of the visiting students had only just begun their morning meditation, and the gardens were filled with the quiet hum of controlled soul power.

For the elite geniuses of the Five Elements Academies, morning cultivation was more than training. It was almost a ritual.

And, for some of them, a performance.

At the center of one courtyard, Huo Wu sat gracefully with her legs crossed and her hands resting upon her knees. She inhaled slowly, and crimson flames blossomed around her in the shape of a lotus.

The fire expanded with her breath. Then contracted.

Again. And again.

The temperature around her rose steadily, but her expression remained perfectly calm.

Several Blazing Academy students watched with admiration.

"Captain's control is getting even better," one of them whispered.

A short distance away, Feng Xiaotian of Kamikaze Academy hovered three feet above the ground, his legs crossed as a gentle current of wind kept him suspended in the air. His eyes were closed, his posture relaxed, and the corners of his mouth were raised ever so slightly.

He opened one eye.

Huo Wu wasn't looking.

He opened the other.

Still nothing.

Feng Xiaotian sighed internally.

Fine. She'll notice eventually.

Nearby, a Thunder Academy student adjusted his immaculate collar and looked around the peaceful courtyard.

"What a beautiful atmosphere," he murmured. "This is how cultivation should..."

THUD.

Everyone froze.

THUD.

A second impact shook the path.

The Thunder student slowly lowered his hand from his collar.

"...What was that?"

Huo Wu's eyes snapped open. Her crimson fire lotus immediately vanished.

Feng Xiaotian lost concentration.

"Whoa!"

He dropped straight onto the grass.

Oof!

Before anyone could recover, another heavy thud echoed from the entrance.

Then another. And another.

A group of figures appeared at the far end of the courtyard.

The Heaven Dou Royal Team.

Except they looked nothing like the polished young nobles everyone had seen at yesterday's ceremony.

Yu Tianheng was performing walking lunges down the path with a massive ironwood log resting across his shoulders. Every step sank slightly into the earth beneath him.

His breathing was controlled, but sweat was already running down his face.

"Ninety-six."

Step.

"Ninety-seven."

Step.

"Ninety-eight."

Behind him, the two Graphite Brothers had apparently decided that carrying normal weights was too easy.

Shi Mo was carrying Shi Mu on his back while performing deep squats.

Shi Mu, meanwhile, was holding two enormous stone blocks against his chest.

"This is stupid," Shi Mu grunted.

"You volunteered yourself," Shi Mo reminded him.

"I was hungry."

"That isn't a valid reason."

"But It is to me."

A few meters away, Dugu Yan was upside down.

She was performing handstand push-ups while wearing a heavy black iron vest.

"Forty-seven."

She lowered herself.

"Forty-eight."

Her arms trembled slightly.

"Forty-nine."

She pushed herself back up.

"Fifty."

She dropped gracefully onto her feet and wiped the sweat from her forehead.

"That was easier than yesterday."

Yu Feng, who was carrying a weighted pack while running sideways, stared at her.

"Easier?"

"You did sixty yesterday."

"Exactly."

She smiled.

"Progress."

Osler suddenly came bounding past them in a series of enormous frog jumps.

"Ugh! My spleen is crying!"

He landed heavily.

Thud!

Then immediately launched himself forward again.

"Is breakfast ready yet?! If I don't eat twenty eggs in the next thirty minutes, I am going to die!"

"Your spleen is not responsible for your hunger," Ye Lingling calmly called after him.

"I don't care which organ is responsible!"

Meanwhile, a few paces away from the struggling Royal Team, Arthev was doing something that made the entire scene look even more absurd.

He was balancing upside down on one hand, his body perfectly straight, with only a single finger supporting his entire weight. The black iron vest strapped around his torso added several dozen kilograms to the already ridiculous exercise.

He lowered himself slowly. Then pushed back up.

One finger. The vest barely seemed to bother him.

Dugu Yan, meanwhile, was still grinding through her handstand push-ups with the same heavy vest.

"One hundred and three... one hundred and four..." she counted through clenched teeth.

Arthev glanced at her upside down.

"Your pace has decreased by 6%."

Dugu Yan's eye twitched. "I swear, Arthev, if you say one more thing about my pace, I'm going to poison your tea."

"That would be inefficient. I drink approximately three cups per day."

"Exactly. I'll poison all three."

A few meters away, the visiting academies stared in stunned silence.

Huo Wu's mouth was slightly open.

She looked at Yu Tianheng struggling beneath the ironwood log, then at Dugu Yan doing handstand push-ups, and finally at Arthev casually balancing on one finger as though gravity were merely a suggestion.

"What... what is wrong with them?" Huo Wushuang finally asked.

"They're training," Feng Xiaotian said.

Huo Wushuang gave him a flat look. "We can see that."

"No, I mean..." Feng Xiaotian rubbed the back of his neck. "What kind of training is this?"

Yu Tianxin had stopped walking as well. His eyes narrowed as he watched the Royal Team.

"They're deliberately restricting themselves. Their soul power isn't even circulating." he said.

The Thunder Academy members looked at him.

"Look at their movements. They're exhausted, but their forms haven't collapsed. They're training their bodies beyond what their soul power normally requires."

Huo Wu's expression became more serious.

Above them, Shui Bing'er stood on the balcony with several Tianshui girls gathered around her.

Her gaze had gone straight to Arthev.

She had expected him to be strong after what she had witnessed at the lake, but seeing him casually perform a one-finger handstand push-up while wearing that heavy iron vest was another matter entirely.

Shui Yue'er leaned over the railing, staring.

"Sister... they're sweating buckets this early in the morning. What kind of training is that?"

Bing'er watched Yu Tianheng nearly collapse beneath the ironwood log before Arthev's calm voice immediately ordered him to continue.

"I don't know," she admitted.

Her eyes shifted back to Arthev.

"But the substitute member is quite strong."

Xue Wu followed her gaze. "Quite strong?"

Arthev lowered himself again. His fingertip pressed against the stone.

He pushed. Up. Without even shaking.

Xue Wu's eyebrows rose.

"That's... more than quite strong."

"He's wearing the same weight as Dugu Yan," another Tianshui girl pointed out.

"And he's using only one finger."

The girls fell silent.

Shui Bing'er couldn't help smiling softly after some enlightenment.

'So that's what he meant by peaceful on the bench.'

Below, Arthev calmly checked his stopwatch.

"Five minutes remaining."

The Royal Team collectively groaned.

"Oh, come on!" Osler shouted. "Five more minutes?! I thought you said five minutes five minutes ago!"

"I did."

"Then why are there still five minutes?!"

"Because you spent thirty seconds complaining."

Osler stared at him in disbelief.

"That's not how time works!"

Arthev looked at his stopwatch.

"It works today."

A few of the Tianshui girls covered their mouths, trying not to laugh.

Even Bing'er had to turn away to hide her smile.

The other academies, meanwhile, were beginning to realize something.

The rumors about the Heaven Dou Royal Team's transformation were not exaggerated.

Whatever had happened to these nobles during their training had changed them completely.

And judging by the terrifyingly calm boy standing beside them, they were beginning to suspect that the real monster of the Royal Team wasn't even wearing the gold uniform.

--------

The Grand Colosseum – Main Arena (10:00 AM)

WROOOOOOOM!

The massive war horns echoed through the Colosseum, rolling across the marble stands and nearly drowning out the roar of fifty thousand spectators.

Second day of exchange event had begun.

Unlike yesterday's formal ceremony, there was no patience for speeches today. The arena floor had been cleared, the protective arrays were active, and six academy banners hung above the entrances.

Today was for the one-on-one tactical spars.

High above the arena, the VIP section was already occupied.

Prince Xue Xing stroked his beard, leaning toward the Crown Prince with a satisfied smile.

"Ah, Your Highness. Today we finally get to see the true strength of our Royal Academy. I assure you, the Empire's investment in their resources has borne excellent results."

Crown Prince Xue Qinghe maintained his usual serene smile.

"Indeed, Uncle. I am looking forward to seeing how they perform."

A few seats away, Ning Fengzhi sat comfortably with a cup of tea in his hand. His eyes remained fixed on the Royal Team waiting inside their entrance tunnel.

He took another sip before quietly speaking to the white-haired man standing behind him.

"Uncle Sword. Have you noticed anything unusual about the Heaven Dou students?"

Sword Douluo Chen Xin didn't immediately answer. His gaze moved across the Royal Team one member at a time.

"They're different," Chen Xin said.

Ning Fengzhi's eyebrows lifted slightly.

"How?"

"Posture first."

Chen Xin's voice remained calm, but his eyes were sharp.

"Their center of gravity is lower than others. Their steps are controlled, and they aren't wasting movement. Even while standing still, their muscles remain slightly engaged."

Ning Fengzhi glanced toward the arena.

"They look sturdier."

"Indeed."

Chen Xin's eyes settled on Yu Tianheng.

"The Dragon boy is carrying considerably more physical mass than his frame should comfortably support. His breathing is heavier than it should be at rest, but his rhythm is extremely stable."

He paused.

"His body has been subjected to prolonged physical conditioning."

Ning Fengzhi's expression became thoughtful.

"Physical training alone could produce that?"

"Not this quickly."

Chen Xin's eyes narrowed.

"Someone has been training them very differently from traditional methods."

Ning Fengzhi smiled faintly.

"Interesting."

He looked toward the Royal Team's tunnel again.

"Then perhaps this exchange will be more interesting than we anticipated."

Chen Xin's gaze shifted.

For the briefest moment, he noticed someone standing farther back in the tunnel.

A black uniform, indicating a substitute.

The boy wasn't stretching or speaking with the others. He simply stood with his arms folded, watching the arena.

Chen Xin's eyes lingered on him for a second longer. Then he looked away.

"That one is unusual too."

Ning Fengzhi followed his gaze.

"Who?"

"The boy in black."

Ning Fengzhi studied Arthev from a distance.

"He isn't carrying himself like a substitute."

Chen Xin's expression remained unreadable.

"Exactly."

"Fascinating," Ning Fengzhi mused.

"His name is Arthev," Xue Qinghe said from beside him.

Ning Fengzhi turned toward the Crown Prince. "It seems Your Highness knows this boy."

"Indeed. I was the one who recommended him to the Royal Team." Xue Qinghe's gaze remained on Arthev.

"He is quite an extraordinary genius, Master Ning."

Ning Fengzhi's interest sharpened.

"Oh?What kind of genius?"

Xue Qinghe smiled faintly.

"Both in strength and intellect. If he were to fight without restrictions, I believe he could defeat the entire Royal Team by himself."

Prince Xue Xing, who had been listening nearby, immediately turned his head.

"The entire team?"

Xue Qinghe nodded. "Yes, Uncle."

Xue Xing's expression became complicated. "Even Yu Tianheng and Dugu Yan together?"

"Even them."

For a moment, Xue Xing said nothing. His eyes moved toward the boy in black again.

"I knew the boy was unusual, but I didn't realize he was that dangerous."

Ning Fengzhi chuckled softly. "And you said his strength wasn't the most remarkable part?"

"Correct," Xue Qinghe replied.

His expression became slightly more serious.

"His mind is even more unusual. Arthev doesn't merely memorize or learn existing theories. Give him a phenomenon, and he will try to understand the principle behind it. Once he understands that principle, he can often derive things that others have never considered."

Ning Fengzhi's eyes narrowed with interest.

"An analytical genius."

"More than that," Xue Qinghe said. "He has an unusual ability to connect seemingly unrelated things. Combat, cultivation, medicine, formations, physical training... he looks for the underlying rules and then builds upon them."

From the perspective of this world, that assessment was not an exaggeration.

But Arthev himself would hardly consider his way of thinking extraordinary.

In his previous life, he had been a student of science. He had grown up in a world where generations of accumulated knowledge had already explained countless phenomena, from basic physics and chemistry to biology, mathematics, medicine, and engineering.

He did not possess the knowledge of some great scholar. Nor was he capable of effortlessly inventing anything he imagined.

What he possessed was something far simpler, yet extremely valuable in Douluo Continent: a broad foundation.

Much of what the people of this world considered advanced knowledge was, from his previous life's perspective, basic or introductory science. Their understanding of many natural phenomena was often limited to observation and experience. They knew that something worked, but not necessarily why it worked.

Arthev had been taught to ask that second question.

Why?

What principle caused it?

Could that principle be applied somewhere else?

That difference alone made him appear extraordinary.

When others saw an established technique, Arthev instinctively looked for the mechanism behind it. When they saw a phenomenon, he tried to break it down into simpler principles. When he encountered two seemingly unrelated subjects, he naturally searched for the common rules connecting them.

His greatest advantage was not that he knew everything.

It was that he had learned to think in a way that allowed him to build upon what he already knew.

And in a world where systematic scientific knowledge was still in its infancy, that advantage was enormous.

Chen Xin finally spoke.

"That kind of mind can be more troublesome than raw strength."

Xue Qinghe gave a faint smile.

"Precisely."

Xue Xing stroked his beard, his earlier confidence now somewhat tempered.

"And yet he is only a substitute?"

"He prefers it that way," Xue Qinghe replied. "Less attention. More freedom to observe."

Ning Fengzhi looked toward Arthev once more.

"Strength capable of defeating an entire team, coupled with that sort of intellect..."

He smiled.

"Your Highness certainly found an interesting young man."

Xue Qinghe's gaze remained calm.

"Arthev is the sort of person who can change the battlefield without ever stepping onto it."

Below, another war horn sounded.

BWOOOOOOM!

The spectators erupted into cheers as the first two academy representatives stepped toward the center of the arena.

The exchange had officially entered its competitive phase.
