Two Days Later
The morning sun slowly climbed above the mountains surrounding Heaven Dou Imperial Academy, its golden light gradually burning away the mist that lingered among the towering pines.
The academy had transformed overnight. Red and gold banners fluttered proudly from marble pillars, flowerbeds had been freshly replanted, and every stone pathway had been swept until it gleamed.
Beneath the immaculate appearance, however, the atmosphere was anything but relaxed.
Students, instructors, and academy staff moved with quiet purpose.
Today, the Imperial Exchange Event officially began.
The peaceful morning was suddenly interrupted by a series of heavy, rhythmic thuds.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
The sound echoed through the academy grounds like a herd of armored beasts marching across stone.
The Elephant Armored Academy had arrived.
At the front walked their instructor, Teacher Hu Yan, a mountain of a man whose broad frame looked capable of blocking an entire gate by himself.
Behind him marched the seven members of the Elephant Armored Team, each one towering over ordinary students with physiques that bordered on monstrous.
Every synchronized step made the gravel crunch beneath their boots.
Crunch. Crunch.
One particularly massive youth glanced around at the elegant architecture surrounding them.
Marble arches. Decorative fountains. Gold-leaf carvings.
His thick eyebrows drew together.
"Too delicate."
His deep voice rumbled.
"A single strick from one of our defensive formations would crack half these buildings."
Teacher Hu Yan didn't even look back.
"Quiet, Hu Yanli."
His gravelly voice carried unquestionable authority.
"We are guests here."
He glanced toward his students.
"Save your strength for the arena."
Hu Yanli snorted but obediently fell silent.
Several Heaven Dou staff members waiting at the entrance visibly relaxed.
Even so, they hurriedly escorted the imposing visitors toward the western guest residences, clearly eager to move the walking fortresses away from the academy's more... expensive structures.
---
7:45 A.M.
As the sun climbed higher, the eastern avenue seemed noticeably warmer.
A procession dressed in crimson and gold entered through the eastern gates with confident, measured strides.
Blazing Academy.
Their uniforms resembled dancing flames, and nearly every student carried themselves with unmistakable pride.
Leading the group was Teacher Huo.
Walking just behind him were the academy's most famous siblings.
Huo Wushuang.
And his younger sister, Huo Wu.
Huo Wushuang's broad shoulders and steady gait gave him the air of an immovable fortress, while Huo Wu walked with effortless confidence, her long crimson hair tied neatly behind her. Her sharp eyes calmly surveyed Heaven Dou's campus.
She looked thoroughly unimpressed.
"So..."
Her lips curved slightly.
"This is the empire's finest academy?"
She glanced at the polished marble pathways.
"It feels more like a noble's vacation estate than a place where Soul Masters train."
Huo Wushuang chuckled quietly.
"Don't underestimate appearances."
He looked toward the distant training grounds.
"Yu Tianheng isn't a fool."
Before Huo Wu could respond, a powerful gust of wind swept through the avenue.
Whooosh!
Leaves spiraled into the air. Several banners snapped sharply.
The students instinctively looked up.
Descending the broad northern staircase came another procession.
Kamikaze Academy.
Their sleek green-and-silver uniforms fluttered in perfect rhythm with the wind surrounding them, and several students barely seemed to touch the ground as they moved.
At their head strode Feng Xiaotian. The confident smile on his face lasted exactly three seconds.
His eyes landed on Huo Wu. Everything else instantly ceased to exist.
"Huo Wu!"
He waved enthusiastically while breaking away from his own team.
"Sister Huo Wu!"
Ignoring the increasingly exasperated expression of his instructor, Feng Xiaotian practically jogged across the courtyard toward her.
"What an incredible coincidence!"
He spread his arms dramatically.
"To think the winds of fate would guide us onto the same path at the exact same moment!"
Several Kamikaze students quietly covered their faces.
"Our captain is doing it again..."
One sighed.
Another simply looked toward the sky.
"We don't know him."
Huo Wu didn't even acknowledge Feng Xiaotian's existence. She calmly continued walking without slowing her pace.
"Wushuang."
Her voice was perfectly flat.
"Please tell the annoying bird to fly into a wall."
Huo Wushuang didn't miss a beat. He looked directly at Feng Xiaotian.
"Go fly into a wall, Xiaotian."
Then he continued walking after his sister.
Feng Xiaotian stopped where he stood, placing one hand dramatically over his heart.
"...She spoke to me."
His teammates stared.
"...Captain."
One finally sighed.
"That... wasn't the important part."
Another shook his head.
"Not even close."
-----
8:15 A.M.
The atmosphere in the central courtyard subtly changed.
A procession clad in deep blue and violet uniforms marched through the academy gates with sharp, disciplined strides.
Thunder Academy had arrived.
Unlike the other academies, they moved with an aggressive cadence, every step synchronized as though they were advancing into battle rather than attending an exchange event.
At their head walked Yu Tianxin.
The heir of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan's secondary branch carried himself with quiet confidence. Faint arcs of blue lightning occasionally danced across his sleeves before vanishing, while his sharp eyes calmly surveyed the academy grounds.
Pride. Confidence.
Those qualities were written plainly across his face.
As Thunder Academy approached the central corridor leading toward the guest residences, they encountered another group moving in the opposite direction.
Blazing Academy.
The two teams slowed almost instinctively.
Yu Tianxin stopped.
Across from him, Huo Wushuang did the same.
The bustling corridor suddenly fell silent.
Students from nearby academies instinctively stepped aside, sensing the invisible pressure gathering between the two captains.
Crackle...
Tiny blue arcs danced around Yu Tianxin's boots.
At the same time, shimmering waves of heat began to distort the air around Huo Wushuang's broad shoulders.
Neither of them summoned a Martial Soul.
Neither released a soul ring.
Yet the oppressive pressure continued to rise.
Lightning.
Fire.
Two of the continent's most destructive elemental attributes confronted one another without exchanging a single word.
"Tianxin, enough"
Thunder Academy's instructor spoke calmly.
The crackling electricity disappeared almost instantly.
Yu Tianxin's lips curled into a faintly mocking smile.
"Let's move."
He glanced at Huo Wushuang.
"We have better things to do than waste our time heating up a hallway."
Without waiting for a reply, he walked past.
Huo Wushuang watched him go for a brief moment. His eyes narrowed slightly.
Then he calmly picked up his luggage again.
"Let's continue."
Blazing Academy resumed walking.
The confrontation had lasted less than ten seconds.
No blows had been exchanged. No Martial Souls had been summoned.
Yet everyone present understood.
The battle lines had already been drawn.
---
9:00 A.M.
By the time the morning mist had completely lifted, the final academy finally arrived.
A gentle breeze drifted through the academy gates.
Tianshui Academy entered like a quiet wave spreading across a calm lake.
Their elegant light-blue and silver uniforms, trimmed with white fur, stood in sharp contrast to the crimson flames of Blazing Academy and the crackling lightning of Thunder Academy.
Led by the graceful yet strict Teacher Leng Qingxue, the all-female squad advanced with flawless discipline.
Their footsteps were perfectly synchronized.
Not hurried. Not slow. Simply precise.
At the center of the formation walked Shui Bing'er. She paid no attention to Heaven Dou's magnificent architecture.
She neither admired nor criticized it.
She didn't flaunt her cultivation, nor did she attempt to attract attention.
She simply walked forward with quiet composure.
Yet despite her silence, her presence naturally drew every eye nearby.
Students who had been chatting moments earlier gradually fell quiet.
Several paused in the middle of unpacking their luggage.
Others simply watched.
"Is that..."
A Kamikaze student standing on a nearby balcony leaned over the railing.
"...the Ice Phoenix genius from Tianshui?"
A Thunder Academy student quietly nodded.
"I've heard the rumors."
He watched Bing'er pass below.
"She really does look untouchable."
Another student muttered almost unconsciously,
"...like an ice goddess."
Not everyone was impressed by Tianshui Academy's arrival.
A short distance away, several students from Blazing Academy stood with their arms crossed, openly watching the all-female squad pass by.
One of the hotter-headed students let out a dismissive snort.
"Pretty little ice sculptures."
His voice was just loud enough to carry.
"Let's see how long they stay frozen once real flames start burning. They'll melt into puddles soon enough."
Several of his companions chuckled.
Shui Yue'er's cheeks puffed out immediately.
"What did you say...."
Before she could fire back, a gentle hand rested on her shoulder.
Bing'er.
Without saying a word, she lightly shook her head.
Yue'er glanced at her sister before reluctantly swallowing her retort.
Bing'er never even looked toward the Blazing students.
She simply continued walking with the same calm, composed expression she had worn since entering the academy.
That complete indifference stung far more than any clever insult could have.
The smiles on several Blazing students faded.
"...She ignored us."
Huo Wu glanced sideways without slowing her pace.
"Good."
She didn't sound offended.
"If someone can provoke you with a single sentence, then your cultivation is still lacking."
The hotheaded student immediately lowered his head.
"Yes, Senior Sister."
As the Tianshui team continued through the sprawling academy grounds, Bing'er's gaze quietly wandered across the campus.
The broad training fields. The elegant courtyards.
The students moving between buildings.
Further down the main avenue, another disturbance caught everyone's attention.
Several pampered Heaven Dou noble students had stopped to stare at the towering members of Elephant Armored Academy.
One of the nobles covered his nose theatrically.
"Did they recruit these people from a quarry?"
His companions laughed.
"They smell like dirt."
"And they look like they eat rocks."
The laughter echoed across the pathway.
Hu Yanli stopped walking.
He didn't argue or even turn his head.
Instead...
He slowly lifted one enormous foot.
BOOM!
His heel crashed onto the marble pavement. A localized tremor rippled outward.
Crack... Crack!
Spiderweb fractures raced beneath the noble students' feet.
One particularly frightened youth let out a high-pitched yelp as the ground shifted beneath him.
"Aah!"
He stumbled backward, lost his footing, and landed flat on the grass.
His expensive robes collected far more dirt than Hu Yanli ever had.
The Elephant Armored captain didn't even look back.
"A weak ..."
He resumed walking.
"...can only bark."
His teammates continued marching behind him as though nothing had happened.
The Heaven Dou nobles quickly found themselves on the receiving end of amused looks from students of every visiting academy.
None of them spoke again.
---
Meanwhile, inside the Central Administrative Hall, the atmosphere was considerably more formal.
The visiting instructors stood before a broad mahogany desk polished to a mirror-like shine.
Teacher Leng Qingxue.
Teacher Hu Yan.
Teacher Huo.
The instructors from Thunder Academy and Kamikaze Academy and others.
All were present.
Opposite them stood Heaven Dou Imperial Academy's chief registrar.
The elderly administrator offered a respectful bow before presenting each instructor with an elegant scroll sealed in silver wax.
"Honored instructors," he announced politely.
"These contain the official regulations, schedules, and venue arrangements for this year's Imperial Exchange."
Teacher Leng accepted her scroll and calmly broke the seal.
Her sharp eyes moved quickly across the document.
Venue:
The Grand Colosseum, located at the center of Heaven Dou Imperial Academy.
Opening Ceremony:
10:00 A.M.
All participating academies were required to assemble in their designated viewing sections no later than fifteen minutes beforehand.
Exchange Regulations:
High-level defensive stabilization arrays would remain active throughout every match to absorb excess soul power and minimize collateral damage.
Lethal force was strictly prohibited.
Any participant attempting a deliberate killing blow would be immediately disqualified, with additional penalties imposed upon their academy.
Although the event remained competitive, its primary purpose was educational exchange.
Instructors were encouraged to closely monitor their students' soul power output to prevent lasting injuries.
Teacher Leng quietly rolled the scroll closed.
Nothing unexpected.
The regulations were strict but reasonable.
More importantly...
They strongly favored restraint. That suited Tianshui Academy perfectly.
The less their opponents learned during this exchange...
The greater their advantage would be when the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Tournament finally arrived.
Outside, the academy continued to grow livelier as the five great elemental academies settled into their temporary home.
For now...
The exchange had yet to begin.
But beneath the polite greetings, measured smiles, and formal etiquette...
Every academy had already begun sizing up the competition.
The first move had already been made.
The next would take place inside the arena.
To be continued...
