The Boundary Outpost Inn, Early Evening
The dining hall of the Boundary Outpost Inn was warm and lively, filled with the smell of roasted duck, spiced cider, and burning wood. A large stone hearth crackled merrily in the corner, its orange glow casting dancing shadows across the wooden walls and providing a comforting contrast to the biting chill of the Sunset Forest only a few miles away.
At the largest table in the room, the girls of Tianshui Academy sat together. Their elegant blue-and-silver uniforms, trimmed with white fur, drew more than a few respectful and admiring glances from passing merchants and mercenaries.
Few dared approach, however. The disciplined aura of one of the continent's finest elemental academies was enough to keep even the rowdier patrons at a polite distance.
"Finally!"
Shui Yue'er waved her chopsticks dramatically as her older sister walked through the heavy wooden doors.
"I was about to send a search party. The roast duck is getting cold, and you know I have absolutely no patience when I'm hungry."
She pointed accusingly at the platter.
"Look at it. It's suffering."
Bing'er couldn't help smiling as she walked over and pulled out the empty chair beside her sister.
"Sorry, Yue'er. I just needed some fresh air."
"You were gone for almost an hour."
"I know."
"And you didn't tell anyone where you were going."
"I know."
Yue'er narrowed her eyes.
"Suspicious."
Bing'er simply smiled and reached for her cup.
At the head of the table sat Teacher Leng Qingxue.
She was a striking, mature woman with long icy-blue hair pinned elegantly behind her head. Her appearance was graceful, but the calm pressure surrounding her made it clear that she was far more than a beautiful instructor. As the lead instructor of Tianshui Academy's premier team, she was responsible for both their training and their safety, and she took that responsibility seriously.
Her sharp eyes had already locked onto Bing'er.
She hadn't said anything yet. She was watching.
Whenever the Ice Phoenix backlash occurred, Bing'er usually returned looking completely drained. Her skin would become deathly pale, her lips would turn blue, and a dangerous layer of frost would cling to her clothes and hair for hours afterward.
Sometimes she couldn't even maintain a stable temperature without assistance.
It was the price of possessing an extreme ice variant.
Her martial soul was powerful enough to make other geniuses envious but her body had paid the price for it.
But tonight...
Something was different. Bing'er looked completely fine.
No. Better than fine.
The faint tension that normally lingered around her eyes had disappeared. Her breathing was steady, her complexion was healthy, and there wasn't even the slightest drop in temperature around her body.
Leng Qingxue's expression hardened.
"Bing'er."
Her voice immediately cut through the surrounding chatter.
The girls stopped eating. Even Yue'er lowered her chopsticks.
Leng Qingxue extended one hand across the table.
"Give me your wrist."
Bing'er didn't hesitate. She placed her hand in her teacher's palm.
Teacher Leng pressed two fingers against Bing'er's pulse point and carefully channeled a sliver of her own high-level ice soul power into the girl's meridians.
Her eyes widened.
Normally, examining Bing'er's meridians after an Ice Phoenix backlash was like reaching into the center of a violent blizzard. The extreme ice energy would be chaotic and unstable, surging through her internal pathways and constantly threatening to overwhelm them.
But now.....It was like touching a perfectly still winter lake.
The Ice Phoenix's energy hadn't been suppressed, sealed, or forcibly restrained.
Nothing had been pushed down or locked away. Instead, the extreme ice attribute was flowing naturally through Bing'er's meridians, calm and obedient, as though it had finally found a state where it no longer needed to fight against her body.
Teacher Leng slowly withdrew her hand.
For perhaps the first time in years, genuine shock appeared in her eyes.
"Your internal energy is completely stable."
She looked directly at Bing'er.
"The cold isn't fighting your body anymore."
Her expression became increasingly serious.
"Bing'er... how did you do this? Did you achieve some kind of breakthrough during your meditation?"
The other girls immediately leaned closer.
Xue Wu, the team's tall and serious vice-captain, studied Bing'er with particular curiosity. Even she could tell something extraordinary had happened.
Bing'er lowered her eyes toward the cup of warm cider between her hands.
For a brief moment, her thoughts returned to the quiet lake.
She remembered the dark-haired boy sitting calmly beside his tiny fire, completely unaffected by the cold frost surrounding him. She remembered the steaming ginger tea he had placed in her hands and the strange warmth she had felt when their fingers briefly touched.
Most of all, she remembered his words.
Ice isn't the presence of cold. It's simply water at rest.
A faint smile touched her lips.
"I didn't break through, Teacher Leng."
She lifted her eyes.
"I just... received some very good advice about Elemental Equilibrium."
"Elemental... Equilibrium?" Shui Yue'er repeated, tilting her head.
She looked genuinely confused.
"What does that even mean? Is it some new meditation technique? Do I need to learn it?"
Bing'er couldn't help smiling.
"Something like that."
Before Yue'er could ask another question, Bing'er picked up her chopsticks and calmly reached for a piece of roast duck.
"Eat, Yue'er. You'll need your energy tomorrow."
Yue'er stared at her.
"You're changing the subject."
"Yes."
"You're admitting it blatantly!"
Bing'er calmly took a bite.
Yue'er narrowed her eyes suspiciously before reluctantly returning her attention to her food.
Teacher Leng watched her star student in silence.
She had lived long enough to recognize when someone was keeping a secret, especially when that someone was a young girl who had suddenly developed an unusually mysterious smile.
But Leng Qingxue also understood something more important.
Bing'er was genuinely at peace. That alone was enough.
Whatever had happened in the forest, whoever had helped her, they had accomplished something that Tianshui Academy's best teachers had spent years failing to achieve.
Teacher Leng decided not to press the matter.
At least, not tonight.
She cleared her throat and tapped one knuckle against the wooden table.
Tok.
The sound immediately drew everyone's attention.
The girls stopped eating and straightened in their seats.
Their relaxed expressions disappeared, replaced by the disciplined focus expected from the elite team of Tianshui Academy.
"Since our captain has safely returned, let us review the parameters for the week ahead," Teacher Leng announced, her strict demeanor returning in full force.
"Tomorrow morning, we enter Heaven Dou Imperial City for the Five Elements Exchange Event. I want to make our objectives, and our restrictions, perfectly clear."
The girls sat up straighter, their playful banter fading as their attention shifted entirely toward their teacher.
"This event is officially labeled a 'friendly academic exchange,'" Teacher Leng said, her lips curling slightly at the word friendly.
"Do not be fooled by the name. The Continental Advanced Soul Master Tournament is approaching, and every major academy is already preparing. This week is essentially a scouting mission."
She tapped a finger against the table.
"The Imperial family wants to measure the Five Elements Academies. The academies want to measure one another. Everyone will be watching everyone else, and everyone will be trying to reveal as little as possible."
A fiery-tempered girl near the end of the table grinned.
"So we crush them, right? Show everyone what the North is capable of?"
"Wrong."
Teacher Leng's answer came so sharply that the girl's grin disappeared.
"You will do the exact opposite."
Leng Qingxue's gaze swept across the table.
"Rule number one of this exchange: Observation over Revelation."
The girls immediately became more attentive.
She looked directly at Bing'er and Xue Wu.
"Under no circumstances are the two of you to use your Martial Soul Fusion Skill."
Both girls nodded.
"The Ice and Snow Ring remains our absolute trump card. If the other academies discover it now, they will have months to study its characteristics and develop countermeasures before the Continental Tournament."
Xue Wu's expression became solemn.
"Understood, Teacher."
"Rule number two."
Leng Qingxue turned the page of her notebook.
"Do not reveal your strongest Soul Skills unless your life is in immediate danger. Use your ordinary abilities, footwork, positioning, and teamwork. Let our opponents believe they have already seen the upper limit of our offensive capabilities."
Shui Yue'er sighed and rested her chin in her hands.
"That sounds incredibly frustrating."
She poked at a piece of duck with her chopsticks.
"We're supposed to spend the entire exchange holding back while everyone else gets to show off?"
"Everyone else will be holding back as well."
Bing'er spoke quietly from beside her.
Her expression had become focused, and the playful warmth from earlier had disappeared as her analytical side took over.
"That's the real purpose of the exchange, Yue'er. The techniques they show us won't necessarily be their strongest ones. We have to determine how strong they actually are by studying what they choose to reveal."
She looked around the table.
"If an opponent deliberately shows us a weakness, we have to consider the possibility that the weakness itself is bait."
Leng Qingxue nodded approvingly.
"Exactly."
She closed the notebook for a moment.
"That is why I want all of you watching more than you're fighting. Pay attention to soul rings, movement patterns, activation time, range, soul power consumption, and especially how they respond when their preferred tactics fail."
The girls nodded one after another.
"Our rivals this year are exceptionally dangerous," Leng Qingxue continued.
"Do not underestimate any of them simply because this is called an exchange."
She reopened the notebook.
"First, Blazing Academy."
The atmosphere around the table became slightly more serious.
"Our elemental opposites. Their captain is Huo Wushuang. He's powerful, straightforward, and relies heavily on physical pressure. He's dangerous, but predictable."
Leng Qingxue's expression sharpened.
"His younger sister, Huo Wu, is the greater threat."
Bing'er listened carefully.
"Huo Wu is aggressive, highly prideful, and possesses exceptional battlefield control. She has a habit of provoking opponents into abandoning their original strategy. Do not let her bait you into a direct contest simply because she insults your abilities."
One of the girls frowned.
"She sounds annoying."
"She is," Leng Qingxue replied. "That is precisely why she's effective."
A few girls chuckled.
Bing'er remained calm.
"I can handle Huo Wu."
Everyone at the table turned toward her.
Her voice carried no arrogance, only quiet confidence.
"Fire can melt ordinary ice, but that doesn't mean it automatically overcomes extreme ice. If I maintain sufficient control over my temperature and soul power, her flames won't have an easy time breaking through."
She paused.
"Ultimately, it will come down to control."
Leng Qingxue studied her for a moment before giving a small nod.
"Thunder Academy," Leng Qingxue continued.
"Led by Yu Tianxin of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Their strength is straightforward: pure, explosive offense. They will try to overwhelm you before you have enough time to establish your freezing formations."
Xue Wu nodded thoughtfully.
"That means we should avoid letting them dictate the pace."
"Exactly."
"Kamikaze Academy," Xue Wu continued. "Wind attribute and strong aerial mobility. They'll probably stay outside our effective range and attack from above."
"Correct. Their mobility is their greatest advantage, so don't waste soul power chasing them. Force them into positions where their movement becomes predictable."
Leng Qingxue turned another page.
"And finally, Elephant Armored Academy."
Her expression became noticeably colder.
"Do not engage them in close combat unless absolutely necessary. Their defensive capabilities are absurd, and there are persistent rumors that they are receiving secret funding and training from Spirit Hall."
Several girls exchanged uneasy glances.
"Whether those rumors are true or not, treat them with extreme caution. Their defense means they can afford to make mistakes that other teams cannot."
Shui Yue'er raised her hand slightly.
"What about the hosts?"
Leng Qingxue looked up.
"The Heaven Dou Royal Team?"
"Yes." Yue'er's eyes immediately brightened.
"They're supposed to be the pride of the empire, right? And Yu Tianxin's cousin, Yu Tianheng, is their captain. I heard they're incredibly strong."
She paused, then added with a grin,
"And handsome."
Several girls laughed.
Leng Qingxue sighed.
"The Royal Team is an anomaly."
She flipped to another page.
"Historically, they've been a collection of pampered nobles with excellent martial souls but questionable discipline. Their resources are impressive, but their actual battlefield experience has always been lacking."
She stopped.
"However..."
The girls became attentive again.
"My contacts in the capital report that the team recently underwent a brutal closed-door survival training program under a new instructor."
"How brutal?" Xue Wu asked.
Leng Qingxue's expression became strangely complicated.
"The reports say they were seen entering Iron Creek Town covered in mud, exhausted, and apparently doing manual labor in a quarry in exchange for food."
Silence.
The girls stared at her.
"Nobles..."
Yue'er slowly lowered her chopsticks.
"...doing manual labor?"
"That's what the report says."
Yue'er burst out laughing.
"That's ridiculous! I can't imagine Yu Tianheng carrying rocks for his dinner."
Leng Qingxue gave her a stern look.
"Assume nothing."
Her tone immediately killed the laughter.
"Whatever happened during that training, something clearly changed. Yu Tianheng and Dugu Yan are both exceptionally talented, and if the reports about their training are accurate, the Royal Team may no longer resemble the team we expected."
She closed the notebook.
"Treat them as the benchmark for the capital's strength."
"And one more thing."
Leng Qingxue's gaze swept across the table.
"Dugu Yan is the granddaughter of the Poison Douluo, Dugu Bo. Do not underestimate her simply because her reputation was built around a poison-based martial soul. Someone with that bloodline and that level of talent is dangerous even before considering what improvements she may have made recently."
The girls nodded seriously.
With the briefing finally concluded, the tension around the table gradually disappeared. Plates were pushed around again, conversations resumed, and within minutes the girls were already discussing what dresses they planned to wear for the opening banquet.
Bing'er ate quietly.
She listened as the others discussed the rival captains.
Huo Wu, fiery and arrogant.
Yu Tianxin, explosive and proud.
Feng Xiaotian, fast and flamboyant.
They all sounded so loud. So eager to prove themselves.
So determined to make sure everyone knew how powerful they were.
Her thoughts drifted back to the frozen lake.
To the strange boy sitting beside his tiny fire.
He had walked directly through her frost domain without even flinching. He had brewed tea as though freezing temperatures were nothing more than a mild inconvenience, explained her condition without the slightest trace of fear, and then refused payment because the caloric cost of the transaction wasn't worth the effort.
He hadn't asked about her background.
He hadn't boasted about his strength.
He hadn't even told her his name.
He had simply helped her.
And then he had walked away.
Bing'er slowly turned toward the window.
Beyond the glass, the distant lights of
City glittered beneath the night sky.
She wondered who he was.
More importantly...
Was someone like him going to be present at the exchange?
'If there really is someone in Heaven Dou City like him...'
"Bing'er."
She blinked. Xue Wu was nudging her shoulder.
"Drink your cider. You're smiling at a window."
Bing'er looked down. Her cup was still full.
"Ah."
She lifted it and took a small sip.
"Sorry. I was just... preparing my mind for the upcoming event."
Yue'er leaned across the table, narrowing her eyes suspiciously.
"Uh-huh," Yue'er smirked from across the table. "Sure you are."
To be continued...
