Chapter 489: Disaster Approaches
The long awaited secret to godhood was finally in Mu En's hands, yet he couldn't even read it. Naturally, he refused to accept this outcome and immediately channeled his powerful soul energy into the book, trying to break the restrictions placed upon it.
But it was useless.
The protective barrier surrounding the book was absolute. Not only was he unable to bypass it, but he couldn't even damage the book itself. It was as if an invisible force was shielding it entirely.
He tried again and again, even resorting to brute force in his frustration, but nothing worked.
This alone was proof of White Cloud City's terrifying power.
Finally, Mu En let the Complete Guide to Reaching Godhood at Rank 100 slip from his hands, watching as it fell helplessly to the floor.
He had risked everything, only to end up with nothing.
The books they had stolen at such great risk were completely useless to them.
Now he understood why White Cloud City had allowed them to take these books. Aside from using them as bait for a larger scheme, the main reason was simple White Cloud City knew they wouldn't be able to access any of the classified information inside.
What now?
What could he do?
For the first time, Mu En felt utterly powerless, as if fate was no longer in his control.
Was his only option now to pray for the Sea God's protection?
On the other side of the continent, the other thieves were facing the same frustrating reality.
After all their "hard work," their grand theft had amounted to nothing.
Was there anything in the world more ridiculous than this?
Meanwhile, in White Cloud City.
A group of high ranking officials gathered to discuss how to proceed.
Originally, they had simply been playing along with the thieves, allowing them to steal the books so they could use it as an excuse for action. But now, they had to report the matter to the City Lord himself.
Small personal schemes were one thing, but concealing important matters from the City Lord was another.
Soon, a report was placed before Ye Cheng, the ruler of White Cloud City.
After reading it, he raised an eyebrow in mild surprise. But after considering the personalities of those involved, he found it entirely unsurprising.
They had practically walked into this trap.
He had been considering a way to bring Douluo Two under White Cloud City's rule, and these fools had handed him the perfect justification.
There was a saying: If the heavens offer it, refusing is a crime.
Yes, White Cloud City's approach was calculated. Yes, it was manipulative. But in the end, the thieves had brought this upon themselves.
Had they simply conducted their visit honestly, White Cloud City wouldn't have bothered with them.
But they had chosen theft.
And with that choice, they had accepted the consequences.
White Cloud City never sought out trouble.
But if someone offered their face for a slap, why not oblige?
"Do as you've planned," Ye Cheng said casually, tossing the report onto his desk.
Though the office appeared empty, it was as if his words were spoken directly into the minds of the city's administrators.
"If they dare to steal from us, they must pay the price. That continent is far too chaotic it's time to bring order to it."
The officials, having received the City Lord's command, were overjoyed.
This was a massive opportunity.
Success here would mean promotions, power, and wealth.
"Now the question is, how many forces should we send?" one official asked.
"That continent doesn't even have a single god level powerhouse. A single fleet should be more than enough," another replied.
"Agreed. Their soul tool technology is hopelessly outdated. They won't stand a chance against our air fleet."
"But according to intelligence, Tang San is still watching over that continent. If we try to take it completely, he might intervene."
"Didn't the Divine Realm establish a rule that gods can't interfere in the mortal world?"
"Hah! Rules exist to be broken." One official sneered. "The Divine Realm only has five God Kings. If Tang San, as one of them, wants to interfere, he'll find a loophole. And even if he outright breaks the rules, who's going to stop him? The other God Kings will just turn a blind eye."
"Good point. I was too influenced by the myths surrounding Tang San. If we look at our version of him, it's obvious he's not some noble figure. He won't hesitate to bend the rules."
"He probably won't act personally. More likely, he'll send an envoy. So to be safe, we should send multiple god level powerhouses."
"And not just any gods. At minimum, we need individuals at the First or Second God Tier."
"But who should we send?"
Silence fell over the group.
While the number of god tier experts had increased due to the rising energy levels of the world and the discovery of treasures from parallel dimensions, truly high level gods remained scarce.
They couldn't exactly ask their City Lord to handle this personally.
And those at the First or Second God Tier weren't individuals they could order around. They would have to convince them.
"Let's just inform them of the situation. If they're interested, they'll come. If not, we'll send whatever gods we can."
"Besides, we don't need to worry about safety. We have the City Lord backing us. Even if Tang San himself shows up, he'll be the one running with his tail between his legs."
Hearing this, the officials grew even more confident.
As graduates of White Cloud Academy, they had absolute faith in their City Lord.
Tang San?
He was nothing compared to Ye Cheng.
With the decision made, they sent messages to the high level gods, explaining the situation and emphasizing that this mission had the City Lord's approval.
To their surprise, most of those contacted even those they had expected to decline immediately agreed to participate.
It seemed that Ye Cheng's name alone carried enough weight to gather an army.
Meanwhile, back on Douluo Two…
They remained blissfully unaware that Douluo One's forces had already sharpened their blades.
An entire aerial fleet had been deployed.
And it was already on its way.
Disaster was approaching.
