One, two, three, and four. Small flames rose over each candle. Five, six, seven, and eight. The rest soon followed, the light they cast drawing a circle. A ninth candle came to life at the center, and a tenth soon followed. A quiet song followed them, delivered by a cute voice tinged with shyness.
"Happy birthday to you~ Happy birthday to you~ Happy birthday to dear William~~ Happy birthday to you~."
The red-haired boy blew out the candles, and a moment of silence spread through the dimly lit room. Boris and Nana watched from the side, and their expressions didn't show the delight at having witnessed such a sweet scene. Something about two children celebrating a birthday all alone felt wrong. Where were their parents? No relatives bothered to show up? What about the cooks the girl mentioned before? Or any other servants that should be taking care of the kids?
"This… feels wrong…" Nana said.
"Yeah…"
