Chapter 82 - The Boy Who Couldn’t Speak

The silence on Seiwa's bench felt suffocating.

Nobody looked at the scoreboard anymore.

25–11.

The numbers burned enough on their own.

Arai sat hunched forward, gripping his towel tightly. Kenta stared blankly at the floor. Even Yuuto—normally loud no matter the situation—had gone quiet, his injured wrist resting against his knee.

And Renji?

He couldn't stop replaying the set in his head.

Every blocked spike.

Every intercepted pass.

Every half-second hesitation Riku Hayama had somehow seen through.

It felt like Shiratori Academy had reached into his mind and exposed every weakness he thought he'd hidden.

---

Old Fear Returns

Coach Sato crouched in front of the team during the break.

"Forget the score," he said firmly. "One set means nothing if you let it break your spirit."

But Renji barely heard him.

His breathing had become shallow.

His thoughts too loud.

You hesitate.

Riku's words echoed endlessly.

And the worst part?

They were true.

Deep down, Renji still feared making the wrong choice.

Still feared letting everyone down.

The same fear he carried when he first stepped onto a volleyball court.

The same fear that once made him unable to speak at all.

---

The Spiral

The second set began badly.

Not because Seiwa stopped fighting—

But because Renji started doubting.

His sets lost confidence.

His timing slipped.

He second-guessed every decision.

Arai jumped too early for one toss.

Yuuto had to adjust awkwardly midair for another.

Even the crowd could feel it.

Shiratori expanded the lead effortlessly.

8–2.

Riku blocked another attack cleanly.

As Renji retrieved the ball, he heard whispers from the stands.

"They're collapsing…"

"Guess this is where the miracle run ends."

"Shiratori's just on another level."

Renji clenched the volleyball tighter.

Maybe they were right.

---

A Voice Cuts Through

Timeout.

Seiwa gathered again.

But before Coach Sato could speak—

Yuuto stood up.

"You done panicking yet?"

The words hit Renji like a slap.

He looked up sharply.

Yuuto's expression wasn't angry.

Just honest.

"You think we got this far because you became perfect?" Yuuto asked. "Because that's not the Renji I know."

The bench stayed silent.

Yuuto pointed toward the court.

"The guy I know is annoying as hell sometimes. Quiet. Overthinks everything. But when things get rough—he still dives for every ball like it matters more than breathing."

Renji's chest tightened.

Yuuto stepped closer.

"You know what your problem is right now?"

Renji swallowed hard. "…What?"

"You're staring at Shiratori like they're gods."

Yuuto smirked faintly.

"But last I checked, gods don't sweat."

---

Remembering the Beginning

Something cracked open inside Renji then.

A memory surfaced—

The first day he joined the team.

Standing frozen near the gym door.

Unable to introduce himself.

Unable to look anyone in the eye.

Back then, simply stepping onto the court felt impossible.

And now?

Now he was standing in the state finals.

Not because he stopped being afraid.

But because he learned how to move despite fear.

---

Asuka's Reminder

As the timeout ended, Asuka caught Renji's sleeve gently.

He looked at her.

Her eyes were calm.

Steady.

"Do you remember what you told me once?" she asked softly.

Renji blinked.

"You said volleyball felt easier than talking because the ball always told you where to go."

A small smile touched her lips.

"So stop listening to the noise."

She pressed a hand lightly against his chest.

"And listen to your heart instead."

---

Back on the Court

The whistle blew.

Renji stepped back into position.

Shiratori served again.

Fast.

Sharp.

Renji received it cleanly.

Perfect pass.

For the first time all match—

He didn't think.

He moved.

The set flew instantly toward Arai.

Spike.

Point.

8–3.

Not much.

But enough.

Yuuto grinned from the bench. "There he is."

---

Changing the Flow

The next rallies felt different.

Renji stopped trying to outthink Riku.

Stopped trying to be flawless.

Instead, he trusted instinct.

A quick toss to Kenta.

A delayed set to the outside.

A risky one-handed save that somehow stayed alive.

Shiratori still led.

Still looked terrifying.

But now?

They were reacting too.

And Riku noticed immediately.

Across the net, his calm eyes sharpened slightly.

For the first time all match—

Seiwa had become unpredictable.

---

The Boy Who Found His Voice

Midway through the set, a long rally erupted.

Arai dug desperately.

Kenta chased it down.

The ball drifted dangerously near the scorer's table.

Without hesitation, Renji sprinted after it.

He leapt over the barrier—

And somehow sent the ball back one-handed.

The crowd exploded.

Yuuto slammed his fist against the bench, laughing.

"That's my setter!"

Renji crashed hard onto the floor outside the court, chest heaving.

But as his teammates rallied around him—

He realized something.

The boy who once couldn't speak…

Had learned how to be heard.

Not with volume.

Not with perfection.

But with heart.

---

Closing Moments

The scoreboard now read:

Shiratori 16 — Seiwa 13

Still behind.

Still struggling.

But alive again.

Riku Hayama stared across the net at Renji for a long moment.

Then—

Very slightly—

He smiled.

Not mockingly.

But knowingly.

As if to say:

Now this feels like a final.
