Chapter 885 - Chapter 881: The Good Doctor

Medical Center.

"Adam, can you do me a favor?"

The Chief of Surgery sidled up to Adam once again.

"Of course."

Adam gave a helpless little smile. "As long as it's something I can manage."

Ever since the new viral serum therapy for malignant glioma achieved a breakthrough success with the third "Cinderella" case, shaking up the entire medical world, the Chief of Surgery had been popping up around Adam like a ghost. 😅

He'd toss out all kinds of requests every now and then.

His attitude? Impeccable.

If Adam said no, the guy would vanish instantly without a single extra word.

Still, it left Adam feeling a bit awkward.

Constantly turning down someone—especially a decent boss—always left a weird taste in his mouth.

"You've got this."

The Chief grinned reassuringly. "Dr. Dixon's coming in today to perform a heart surgery. I'd love for you to handle some PR, show her our hospital's strength and sincerity, and convince her to stay."

"Dr. Dixon?"

Adam blinked. "You mean the Dr. Dixon, the famous cardiothoracic surgeon?"

"Yep, that's her."

The Chief glanced at Adam carefully, choosing his words. "With your growing success, Adam, our hospital's reputation is skyrocketing. We're even in the running to become the top teaching hospital.

You know how medical resources work—it's a siphon effect.

Once we hit the top, patients will come flooding in.

We need to be ready.

Leonard's still recovering from his heart surgery, and even when he's back, he won't be able to handle the workload like before—especially with how intense things are about to get.

You, Adam, lean toward cardiothoracic surgery, but you're more like a House M.D.-style genius—jack of all trades.

Cardiothoracic, ER, neurosurgery, orthopedics, pediatrics
 heck, even urology—you're into everything.

And the kicker? You're amazing at all of it.

But that also means you can't pour all your energy into cardiothoracic alone.

We need Dr. Dixon to join us, to boost our strength even more. We've got to siphon talent to us, not let others siphon from us.

So, I'm hoping you can help me convince her to stay."

"I'll do my best."

Adam nodded, seeing the logic. A stronger siphon effect for the hospital would benefit him too. He smiled. "But Dr. Dixon's famously quirky. I can't guarantee I'll win her over."

"Just you showing up is enough."

The Chief chuckled. "If she doesn't want to work with someone as awesome as you, that's her loss, not ours."

"When's she getting here?"

Adam asked.

"Any minute now."

The Chief glanced at his watch, then peered toward the stairwell. "Heads up—she's here!"

Adam followed his gaze and spotted a middle-aged woman in all red, topped with a red hat. She held a neatly folded white coat in her arms, her eyes darting around distractedly.

Whenever someone got too close, she'd instinctively step aside.

"Dr. Dixon, welcome to the Medical Center!"

Adam stepped forward with a warm smile. "I'm Dr. Duncan."

"I know you. Adam's Hands. Genius doctor."

To Adam's surprise, Dr. Dixon actually reached out to shake his hand.

He'd heard she was eccentric—her reputation in the medical world was a bit like Sheldon's in science.

From what he'd seen so far, she even seemed to share Sheldon's germaphobe vibes.

So, Adam hadn't planned to offer his hand—but she'd gone for it first! 😼

"I brought my own scrubs."

After the handshake, Dr. Dixon quickly pulled her hand back, dropped her gaze, and muttered to herself.

"I see that."

Adam grinned. "Good habit! I've got a few friends who do the same."

"I'm here today to do a heart transplant."

Dr. Dixon flicked her eyes up at Adam for a split second before looking back at the floor, still talking to herself.

"I'm in cardiothoracic surgery. Founded by Christiaan Barnard in 1967. That's my field. Cardiothoracic."

"That's my goal too."

Adam smiled. "I'm super excited to assist you with this heart transplant, Dr. Dixon."

"I'm Dr. Richard Webber. We spoke on the phone."

The Chief stepped up with a smile, offering his hand.

Dr. Dixon shook it briefly, then yanked her hand back, resting it on the folded coat in her arms.

That move, that vibe—Adam knew it all too well.

It was straight-up Sheldon energy: hardcore germaphobe, hating physical contact, but grudgingly playing along for social norms.

Every time, she looked like she wanted to whip out hand sanitizer on the sly.

Though, to her credit, she was way politer than Sheldon.

If this were him, he'd already be turning away to "secretly" disinfect his hands. 😂

"Let Dr. Duncan show you around and go over the patient's condition."

The Chief gave his orders and bolted.

He might've been eager for Dr. Dixon's skills, but dealing with her quirks? He'd rather pass.

"Dr. Dixon, follow me!"

Adam invited her cheerfully.

He took the lead, and only then did Dr. Dixon look up, trailing behind him as she started scanning the hospital.

"Melendez, grab the patient's chart."

Spotting the short guy nearby, Adam gave him a task. "And get things ready for surgery."

Melendez shot a curious glance at the obviously odd Dr. Dixon before heading off with a nod.

"Here's our cardiothoracic department
"

Adam led Dr. Dixon in, starting the tour.

"The first heart transplant was on September 7, 1896, performed by Dr. Ludwig Rehn in Frankfurt, Germany."

Dr. Dixon slipped into her habit of dropping random facts.

"Yep!"

Adam nodded with a grin.

Total Sheldon vibes.

Having a weirdo like Sheldon as a friend made Adam totally unfazed by Dr. Dixon's quirks—he actually found them kind of endearing.

As they toured, he could tell, despite her blank face, that she was getting happier.

"Dr. Duncan."

Melendez came back over.

"Fill Dr. Dixon in."

Adam nudged him. "She's leading the surgery."

"Got it."

Melendez turned to Dr. Dixon—who'd shifted away when he approached, then turned back, flicked her eyes at him, and immediately looked away again.

"The transplant's being prepped. It was scheduled six years ago, but the heart was too small.

So they added a donor heart to support the original one.

They did a piggyback procedure—"

"It's a heterotopic transplant!"

Dr. Dixon cut in sharply. "'Piggyback' is the layman's term. The proper term is heterotopic heart transplant! Don't call it that! Don't!"

"Melendez, you hear that?"

Adam glanced at him with a smirk. "We're pros here. When we're talking to fellow pros, stick to the technical terms."

"Yes, sir."

Melendez peeked at Dr. Dixon, then at Adam, and nodded wisely.
