The answer came sooner than either traveler expected.
The veteran guard returned at a brisk pace, accompanied by a younger officer clad in dark green brigandine. Crossed silver swords were stitched across his breast, identifying him as one of Krynova's military aides.
He stopped before Arathorn and gave a crisp nod. "General Whitcomb has confirmed your identity."
The captain inclined his head. "I expected no less, the gates are to be opened."
The officer turned sharply. "Open the western gate!"
A deep horn echoed across the walls.
Moments later, gears hidden within the gatehouse began to grind. Thick chains rattled, and the enormous gates slowly parted inward with the groan of ancient timber reinforced by iron.
A gust of warm air drifted from the city beyond.
"Enter." Said the officer
Arathorn stepped forward without hesitation.
Thane followed, though his eyes wandered everywhere at once.
Handh was unlike any city he had imagined.
