Chapter 514 - Chapter 514: The Secret Potion, Arriving in Olivine City

"Baoba, the director of the Kanto Safari Zone, is the current candidate."

Sure enough, Yuriko mentioned a name that Silas was quite familiar with.

Seeing the surprise on Silas's face, she smiled.

"Don't get the wrong idea. This isn't about targeting Director Baoba.

"On the contrary, it's precisely because of you that we were able to get in touch with Director Baoba.

"As the director of the first Safari Zone, Baoba has an incredible amount of experience.

"On top of that, since Pokémon from Kanto and Johto have a lot in common, he's actually the most suitable candidate to serve as the director."

When she put it that way, it did make sense.

Silas nodded.

Although Baoba hadn't left him with the best impression at first, after interacting with him later on, Silas had to admit that he was actually an excellent administrator and leader.

Otherwise, the Kanto Safari Zone wouldn't have become so famous.

According to Baoba himself, he hadn't actually intended to stop Silas back then.

If Silas's senses hadn't reached an almost absurd level after undergoing training from Nobuhiko, he probably wouldn't have noticed those guards approaching him.

If he hadn't noticed them, perhaps there would have been another Flygon among his main team by now.

Then again if he had caught Trapinch back then, Silas felt that, given his personality, he probably would have simply turned around and left.

After all, at that time, he wasn't rich enough to go wandering around while carrying a small mountain of gold with him.

If that had happened, he never would have encountered the little Togekiss who was still a Togepi at the time.

Perhaps it was simply fate.

He and Flygon were destined to miss each other, while he was destined to meet Togekiss.

Or, if he wanted to be a little narcissistic, Silas felt that Togepi's incredible luck might have played a part as well.

"Would Koga agree to this?"

Silas frowned as he thought of another person.

For Fuchsia City, the Safari Zone could be said to support a huge portion of its income and visitor traffic.

If Baoba were brought over to establish a new Safari Zone in Johto, the Fuchsia Gym would undoubtedly be affected to some extent.

"He agreed," Yuriko explained. "Baoba coming here to establish a Safari Zone doesn't mean the one in Fuchsia City has to close. His son will take over as director and continue running it.

"Besides, according to our plans, the Johto Safari Zone and the Kanto Safari Zone will have some significant differences. The experience they provide will be completely different."

Most importantly, Koga could come to Johto and take up a position as one of the region's Elite Four.

Silas silently added the most compelling reason to Yuriko's explanation.

He quickly understood everything.

Setting aside whether the difference in distance and Pokémon species would actually affect the Kanto Safari Zone's business, even if it suffered some losses, Koga could use this opportunity as a perfectly reasonable excuse to return to the Johto League.

The Johto League establishing its own Elite Four had long since ceased to be a secret.

It was simply that, for various reasons, the plan hadn't been formally implemented yet.

Strength was obviously essential.

But if you had absolutely no connections, then unless you were strong enough to completely overwhelm Trainers of the same level, it would still be difficult to secure a position among the regional Elite Four.

Take the selection tournament, for example.

If the Trainer facing you happened to have a grudge against you, they might deliberately fight to the point where your Pokémon suffered severe injuries, even if it meant losing the battle themselves.

Then your chances of winning the next battle would inevitably decrease.

Everyone participating would be an elite Trainer. Even the smallest factor could affect the final result.

Put simply, sometimes becoming a member of the regional Elite Four wasn't just about strength.

It was also about connections and relationships.

Of course, there were a few monsters who were exceptions.

Especially when someone like Pryce participated in the selection tournament, connections became even more important.

There was no doubt that Pryce didn't want to become a member of the Elite Four, but he still had to maintain the reputation of his Gym.

Just imagine it.

If the Gym Leader of Mahogany Gym, one of the eight Gyms in Johto, refused to participate in the Elite Four selection, wouldn't people start wondering whether it was because he lacked the necessary strength?

That was precisely the kind of suspicion a Gym absolutely didn't want to create.

The future Cerulean Gym was a perfect example.

Because of its poor reputation, the Cerulean Gym would eventually be regarded as the weakest Gym in Kanto, and it would barely manage to remain in operation thanks to the performances of Misty's three sisters.

For a Gym, reputation was directly connected to its profits and future development.

If Pryce and Koga happened to meet in a tournament round such as the Round of 16, given their complicated relationship, Silas could almost guarantee that Pryce would go easy on him.

But if Pryce encountered someone else.

Silas could easily imagine him beating that opponent until they were completely unable to fight back.

That wasn't even a battle on the same level.

A Pryce fighting at full strength belonged among the world's top Trainers. He might even be stronger than some regional Champions.

Of course, a certain level of strength was still necessary.

After all, Elite Four-level Trainers were all extremely proud. Without the basic qualifications, they might not necessarily be willing to give you that kind of face.

Silas pushed all those chaotic thoughts aside.

"Then, Yuriko, once the Safari Zone is completed, you have to let me know so I can come take a look."

Yuriko smiled.

"Of course. By then, no matter how powerful you've become, don't forget to advertise our Safari Zone and serve as its spokesperson."

"Master, Senior Brother Chuck, the things you asked for are here."

As they were speaking, an apprentice staggered back carrying several large bags filled with supplies.

Chuck's expression immediately darkened.

"You can't even carry this little bit of stuff properly? Your stamina is far too poor! Laziness is your greatest enemy! Train constantly, like a wave that never stops!"

"Yes, Senior Brother!"

The errand-running apprentice was suffering both mentally and physically, but he immediately placed the supplies on the ground and jogged back into formation.

To be fair, there really were a lot of supplies.

Silas hadn't expected the quantity to be so enormous just for some auxiliary ingredients.

Most importantly, under the Shuckle Elder's skillful hands, the auxiliary materials and the Berry Juice produced by the Shuckle were being consumed at an astonishing rate.

One bottle after another, containing potions of different colors or what appeared to be medicinal pills, was neatly placed into a box beside him.

Silas watched the Shuckle Elder's movements without blinking.

The special Berry Juice used as the raw material was undoubtedly an important factor, but the old man's craftsmanship was equally impressive.

After all, weren't there plenty of people who could turn excellent ingredients into terrible food?

Could you really blame the ingredients every time?

Obviously, that didn't make sense.

"This is one of Kura's finest potion combinations. It looks like he was really satisfied with your answers."

Although Yuriko couldn't make potions herself, she was very familiar with the Shuckle Elder and immediately recognized what he was making.

"Of course. We can't let such an outstanding young man suffer a loss, can we?"

The Shuckle Elder responded while appearing completely focused on his work.

For him, the entire process was already so familiar that, aside from a few particularly important steps, he could probably make the rest with his eyes closed.

About half an hour later, the Shuckle Elder finally finished what he was doing.

"Wipe your sweat."

Yuriko thoughtfully handed him a towel.

"All right, kid. Come over and see if you're satisfied."

The Shuckle Elder wiped the sweat from his forehead and beckoned Silas over.

"Let me introduce you to these potions.

"First, we have the Affection Secret Potion. You can call it the Bond Potion or the Friendship Potion if you prefer.

"Its effect is simple. Apply it to both yourself and your Pokémon, and that Pokémon's affection toward you, as well as the level of understanding between the two of you, will increase rapidly.

"As for how long the effect lasts, roughly a month. There are three bottles here. If you use them sparingly, they should be enough to help one of your Pokémon make a breakthrough.

"Of course, they're even more effective when used on Pokémon in their infancy. That Gible of yours would be perfect."

The first items were three round-bottomed flasks filled with a mysterious blue liquid.

Just from the Shuckle Elder's explanation, Silas could already imagine how precious they were.

"You mean this can help a Pokémon break through from the Elite level?"

If that were really the case, this stuff would be priceless.

"More or less."

The Shuckle Elder casually waved his hand.

"But the effect itself isn't actually that great.

"When I said three months, I was taking your talent into account. Under normal circumstances, it would take about a year just to have the slightest chance."

As he had said, the potion's true purpose was to help young Pokémon establish a solid foundation.

For a Pokémon that had just hatched from an Egg, its initial friendship was not only relatively high, but also much easier to increase.

Combined with the three Affection Secret Potions, this could undoubtedly shorten the amount of time needed to eventually reach the Champion level.

"Next, these ten sets can rapidly increase all the abilities of Pokémon below the Champion level without any side effects.

"There isn't anything particular about the order. Just consume one set at a time.

"As for the exact effect, that depends on how well you've trained your Pokémon. The harder you've trained, the greater the improvement.

"However, there is still a limit. Don't expect them to help a Pokémon break through its natural limits or anything like that."

The Shuckle Elder pointed toward another sixty small bottles inside the box.

They were clearly divided into six different colors.

Silas couldn't help breathing a little faster.

Put simply, these were essentially an alternative version of Silph Co.'s L-series candies, except in liquid form.

Compared with those, however, these potions had a higher upper limit on their effects and didn't require Pokémon to continuously consume ten or even twenty sets at fixed intervals.

After a rough calculation, just these ten sets of potions were worth at least two or three hundred million Pokédollars.

Adding the three Affection Secret Potions, Yuriko and the Shuckle Elder's gift was worth no less than five hundred million Pokédollars, perhaps even more.

"This isn't this a little too valuable?"

Silas could only give an awkward, helpless smile this time.

He had never imagined that Yuriko would prepare such an extravagant gift for him.

Originally, he had thought it would be nothing more than some rare items.

"Come on."

Yuriko waved her hand generously.

"They aren't as expensive as you think. Most of the cost is just the labor. We're practically family, so there's no need to be so formal."

As she spoke, she winked at Silas.

"If you really want to thank me, then win the championship at this year's Silver Conference and bring the trophy back.

"I've never seen the winner's trophy from a regional competition before."

Having heard her say that, there was naturally no way Silas could refuse. More importantly, he had never intended to refuse in the first place.

"Then I'll have to thank you properly, Yuriko."

"What about me? What about me?"

The previously invisible Chuck suddenly jumped into the conversation.

"You? Go train the apprentices."

As the true head of the household, Yuriko didn't indulge him in the slightest. She grabbed him by the ear and tossed him straight into the dojo's training area.

"What are you looking at?! Train properly!"

Seeing the apprentices staring at him, Chuck put on a seemingly fierce expression.

All the apprentices suppressed their laughter and didn't dare say a word, afraid their master would add extra training to their routines.

"Come on. I'll take you around Cianwood City. Chuck spends all day training, so don't learn that from him.

"I'll buy you a few sets of clothes while we're at it. The clothes you're wearing are really too unfashionable."

On the other side, Yuriko took Silas out onto the streets without another word.

"Mrs. Yuriko, is this the new apprentice you took in? What a handsome young man!"

"That's right, that's right! He's quite impressive!"

"Is he Master Chuck's junior? What a promising young man! Are you dating anyone? Do you have a girlfriend? Should I introduce you to someone?"

"Come on, come on. He's in the prime of his development. Where would he have time for romance? Young people should focus on working hard first."

Over the next three or four hours, Silas experienced emotions he hadn't felt in a long time.

Perhaps because she and Chuck had no children, Yuriko completely treated him like her own son.

But Silas didn't understand why.

"Really, this is enough."

When he saw Yuriko preparing to buy out an entire floor of clothing, Silas broke into a cold sweat and hurriedly stopped her.

"I still have other things in my Bag. It isn't convenient to carry too much when I'm out in the wild. A few sets are enough."

After much persuasion, Yuriko reluctantly settled for buying him twenty pieces of clothing and trousers to mix and match.

Fortunately, Silas's Trainer equipment was already top-of-the-line, with many pieces being special internal models.

Otherwise, judging by Yuriko's enthusiasm, she probably would have given his entire wardrobe a complete makeover.

"Woo~"

Three o'clock in the afternoon.

The ferry bound for Olivine City sounded its horn.

"Do your best!"

Full of energy, Yuriko waved goodbye to Silas from the dock as he stood on the ferry's deck.

Beside her, Chuck wore a simple, goofy smile. It was impossible to tell that he was actually a powerful Fighting-type expert and Gym Leader.

As she watched the ferry gradually sail away until it disappeared from sight, Yuriko's smile faded and she let out a quiet sigh.

"What is it?"

Chuck put an arm around his wife's shoulders.

Yuriko shook her head.

"This child isn't nearly as carefree as he appears. He thinks about things too much. I wonder if it's because he grew up alone?"

"He's still a kid. He'll get better."

Chuck didn't offer much more than that.

"I hope so."

Yuriko genuinely liked this child.

Even during their short time together, she had discovered that he was far more mature than people his age.

"Why don't we have one of our own?"

Chuck spoke with an unusually shameless expression for a man his age.

"Heh."

A cold smile appeared at the corner of Yuriko's lips.

"Aaargh~!"

A pained scream echoed throughout the entire harbor.

Meanwhile, bathed in the setting sun, Silas spread his arms toward the coastline.

"Olivine, I'm here~"

In the distance, the lighthouse flashed repeatedly, guiding the way.

It almost seemed to be welcoming Silas's arrival.
