Chapter 398 - Chapter 398: Why?

"Whoooosh—"

Violent winds howled endlessly through the entire valley.

Why the Valley of Wind possessed such a strange natural phenomenon remained a mystery.

Some researchers had once analyzed the terrain data and concluded that the direction and structure of the valley should not produce such intermittent super-gales.

Most importantly, the wind here never stopped, regardless of season.

Blaming it purely on air circulation simply didn't make sense.

Even riding on Pidgeot's back, Silas found it difficult to breathe.

Fortunately, Pidgeot was strong enough. Trainer and Pokémon landed safely at the bottom of the cliff.

Jagged stone pillars rose unevenly across the landscape, creating a strangely beautiful scene.

But training in such an environment was undoubtedly extremely difficult. That said the results would certainly be excellent.

"Blaziken, secure this portable ladder to the cliff wall. Gigalith, create a simple temporary shelter. It doesn't need to be large, we'll sleep in the one above at night.

Serperior, assist Gigalith with Leech Seed and Vine Whip.Togekiss, find an area where the rock pillars are less dense and begin training. Be careful of falling debris.

Ampharos, give me a recharge."

Silas continued issuing orders smoothly.

"Kirlia, you too. The wind here is perfect for training your Meditation ability. Your goal is to enter and maintain a meditative state for two hours despite the wind's interference.

Karrablast, move those rocks over here. They'll be your training equipment. Gigalith, apply Gravity to it later.

And you, Vulpix…"

Silas looked down at the wide-eyed fox staring at him expectantly.

"Just make some ice blocks. We'll have cold drinks during break."

"Vul!"

Alolan Vulpix jumped happily, spun 180 degrees midair, and landed facing the other direction. With its cloud-like tails swaying, it ran to a corner and began diligently forming small ice blocks.

In a way, this was training too.

Creating properly shaped and structurally stable ice blocks was still somewhat difficult for a recently out-of-infancy Alolan Vulpix.

This method effectively improved its control over Ice-type energy.

Of course, Silas wouldn't deny the main reason was that the little one was still too small to be of much help.

"Alright. This is your battlefield."

Silas turned to the impatient Pidgeot beside him.

"Pidgeot!"

Just like that, the previously quiet Valley of Wind became lively. During the day, various cries echoed constantly.

But no one paid attention.

"Shift three centimeters left. Increase altitude by one meter. Watch the falling rock on your upper right, destroy it with Steel Wing."

Braving the roaring wind, Silas calmly directed Pidgeot.

"Next, rear-diagonal rotational strike. Use Aerial Ace to break that rock pillar."

"Boom!"

A white-glowing figure weaved freely through the cliff base.

Gigalith, long accustomed to this, rotated its body slightly. Rock-type energy immediately acted upon the shattered debris.

Before long, the destroyed pillar was restored to its original state.

As Pidgeot trained, Gigalith's control over Rock-type energy gradually improved as well. Rock-type power wasn't just for offense and defense. It could also control the battlefield.

Just like when it first practiced Gravity.

Gigalith pondered silently, sandy-yellow pulses flickering around it.

"Karra!"

Feeling the intensified pressure from Gravity, Karrablast gritted its teeth and lifted.

The massive rock that had begun to sink rose back to its original height.

It could feel its body strengthening continuously.

It was incredible.

Blaziken was training too.

Under the interference of strong winds, weaker Fire-type moves like Ember caused minimal damage.

"BOOM!"

A column of fire erupted from its mouth Flamethrower. Even the Valley's raging wind couldn't fully suppress it.

Only after Blaziken ceased energy output did the flames slowly fade.

Then what if, the flames were compressed to the extreme and detonated, like Blast Burn?

Blaziken tried compressing the already small Ember further.

The number decreased, But the result didn't change.

The flame survived less than three seconds before being extinguished.

"Try filling it with energy and letting it explode instead?"

Silas suggested while multitasking during Pidgeot's training.

If it couldn't be compressed.

Overload it.

Blaziken's eyes flashed.

"Pop."

A faint cracking sound.

This Ember dissipated even faster than before.

But Blaziken smiled.

Though short-lived, the burst damage at that instant far exceeded previous attempts.

The idea was correct.

"Blazi!"

Blaziken grinned at Silas.

Silas gave an encouraging gesture.

"Work hard. Try breaking through before Pidgeot."

"Pidgeot?!"

Pidgeot protested midair.

"Left-rear rock. Whirlwind!"

Silas suddenly ordered.

Pidgeot spun instantly, releasing twin currents.

"Now diagonal forward dive, pull up sharply!"

Silas gave it no time to think.

Pidgeot's massive body carved increasingly elegant arcs through the air.

Its movements grew more natural. More fluid.

Nearby, Serperior's Vine Whip, intended to interfere with Togekiss, was blown off-course by a sudden gust and slammed into a cliff wall.

Togekiss seized the opportunity, fluttering around Serperior in circles. Unfortunately, its Air Slash was wildly inaccurate in the chaotic wind.

It was clearly trying hard to control it, But with limited effect. Soon enough, both Pokémon were back to square one.

Further away, yellow arcs of electricity flickered randomly. Ampharos repeatedly discharged and recharged its power.

Kirlia floated beside it, eyes closed, meditating.

At first, it couldn't enter focus at all in the raging wind.

Now even with static electricity crackling nearby, it could calm its mind without distraction. The strength of a Psychic-type Pokémon was gradually revealing itself through Kirlia.

"Whoosh—"

A massive, fully formed ice block flew toward it.

Kirlia's figure faded into nothingness and reappeared elsewhere.

The failed attacker, Vulpix, stretched out its tiny paws again, continuing to condense ice.

Compared to before, the ice blocks it created were stronger in size, hardness, and temperature by more than a single tier.

No one knew that deep within the rarely visited Valley of Wind, beneath a cliff, a young Trainer and his Pokémon were steadily advancing.

Twenty Days Later

Silas woke from sleep feeling unusually fatigued.

He glanced at his Pokégear.

"…Twenty days already?"

Irritation stirred within him.

Food and equipment weren't an issue, he had prepared thoroughly, and his Pokémon could help as well.

Every partner's progress had been remarkably fast.

Perhaps because there was nothing here no distractions, they had immersed themselves completely.

Everyone except Pidgeot.

Though its daily flight patterns showed steady improvement, adapting more naturally to the winds. The qualitative change never came.

On Zero's panel, the "Near Elite" designation remained unchanged.

"It's not the wrong direction, its strength is definitely increasing."

Silas frowned.

Both data analysis and Pidgeot's own feedback confirmed the training approach was correct.

More than once during training, Pidgeot had successfully merged with the wind, displaying astonishing speed.

By all logic, It should have already broken through to Elite level.

"Pidgeot…"

Pidgeot, resting nearby, sensed Silas' anxiety and gently patted his back with a wing.

"It's fine. I'm just being impatient. We've got plenty of time."

Silas buried his frustration.

Originally, he had estimated Pidgeot wouldn't break through until October or November.

It wasn't even mid-July yet.

Their progress already exceeded expectations.

He could afford patience.

"Alright! Training starts now, everyone!"

He snapped his fingers with a forced smile.

"So this is the place… Looks like you've run into trouble."

A voice echoed through the valley.

Standing at the entrance was Kiyo, dressed in his martial arts uniform.

He recalled what Chuck had told him over the phone:

"If my guess is right, that kid Silas is training in the Valley of Wind. At his and his Pokémon's rate of improvement, he should've broken through by now.

If there's still no news, there's only one possibility, he's stuck. Go help him."

Kiyo trusted his teacher's judgment completely.

So he had come straight from Mt. Mortar.

"Still, how does Silas get stuck at Elite level? It's difficult, sure, but for him it should've been natural progression…"

He shrugged.

Better to see for himself.

He strode into the valley.

Meanwhile, Silas had uncharacteristically stopped training. He sat inside the cave Gigalith had carved, sulking.

Beside him lay Pidgeot, feathers slightly messy, from Silas kneading them absentmindedly.

"Why won't it work…?"

His voice was full of confusion.

"Pidgeot…"

Pidgeot sounded equally drained.

It was now the end of July. Tomorrow would be August. Still no sign of breakthrough.

Worse, Its growth had slowed to nearly imperceptible levels.

It felt like it had reached the limit of Near Elite.

"Trainer and Pokémon problems? If you don't understand, then battle."

The sudden voice made Silas jolt upright.

Kiyo stood at the cave entrance, arms crossed, presence overwhelming.

"You've still got a long way to go, kid."

Silas exhaled in relief.

"Kiyo? Why are you here again?"

After over a month without seeing another person, his vigilance had dulled.

That wasn't good.

"Teacher figured you ran into trouble. Looks like it's serious."

Kiyo scanned Silas' exhausted appearance.

Living like a wild man for over a month had taken its toll.

"Come on. I'll show you what a real Elite-Trainer looks like."

Straight to the point.

During Silas' month of effort, Kiyo already on the verge of breakthrough had succeeded.

He now had six Elite-level Fighting-type Pokémon.

And he wasn't stopping there.

"Congratulations," Silas sighed sincerely.

They stepped outside.

"Machamp, battle ready."

Kiyo immediately released his ace.

"Seriously? No warm-up?" Silas complained lightly, but he threw a Poké Ball anyway.

"Go, Pidgeot!"

The two Pokémon locked eyes one grounded, one airborne.

Silas wiped his face, expression sharpening.

"Pidgeot, Whirlwind!"

Two spiraling gusts formed instantly, tearing toward Machamp.

Kiyo rolled his neck.

"You've never really fought a full Elite-level Trainer, have you? Not just one Pokémon, but at least three."

His stance lowered into a martial guard.

"Only then can you say you've truly touched the threshold of Elite!"

"Machamp, Brick Break! Shatter it!"

"Machaaamp!"

All four arms glowed bright white as it charged forward.

Each step crushed stone beneath its feet.

"Clang!"

Palm met whirlwind with a metallic screech.

One second of resistance, then the gust shattered.

Silas prepared to counterattack, but Kiyo moved faster.

"Close the distance! Continuous Cross Chop!"

"Machaaamp!"

Four arms rose high as it charged wildly toward Pidgeot.

Silas frowned.

"Evade! Air Slash counter!"

Kiyo's Machamp had Guts, not No Guard, so evasion was possible. But being suppressed from the start was dangerous.

Even with the power gap, Silas still aimed for victory.

Pidgeot shot upward.

"Not getting away!"

"Machamp! Push through! Dual Chop!"

Kiyo ignored the incoming Air Slashes, forcing Machamp to power forward.

Silas clenched his jaw.

This was brute-force oppression.

"Gain altitude, use Twister!"

Why trade blows at low height?

Pidgeot was a Flying-type.

It should dominate the skies.
