Chapter 368 - Chapter 368: On Infrastructure and Preparation

The sudden external force caused Silas's descent to accelerate.

"Ralts!"

Ralts clearly understood the urgency of the situation.

Grabbing its Trainer's collar with its tiny hands, blue-violet waves of Psychic energy flashed repeatedly in midair.

Just like during the Tauros Pursuit Event in Leaf Town, Silas awkwardly stepped through the air several times.

Even though wooden debris continued raining down from above, thanks to the precise coordination between Trainer and Pokémon, he avoided being struck.

Blaziken, meanwhile, relied on its agility, leaping from one falling beam to another in midair.

Using Aura, it could clearly sense which pieces of wood were still solid enough to step on and which were completely rotten inside.

After all, Aura is the wave of all things. Whether living creatures or inanimate objects, their condition can be perceived through Aura.

Earlier in the studio, it had simply been too anxious to save Silas and momentarily forgot to use Aura to assess the surroundings.

Otherwise, Blaziken could have walked over and pulled Silas up safely.

Though even if it had, the overall situation likely wouldn't have changed much.

The collapse of the Goldenrod Radio Tower wasn't caused by Blaziken's movement.

On the other side, Whitney and Mary weren't in terrible shape either.

Two pink Pokémon were clutching their clothing, awkwardly maneuvering them through the air to avoid the falling debris.

They were Clefable and Wigglytuff.

Although Clefable usually walks on the ground, it does have small wings and is capable of flight.

After all, Whitney is an official Gym Leader. Having her Pokémon carry someone isn't difficult.

As for Wigglytuff, that was thanks to its unique body structure.

Its body is highly elastic. By continuously inhaling air, it can inflate itself dramatically. With sufficient training, rhythmic inhaling and exhaling can mimic a form of flight.

That's one of the reasons it's known as the Balloon Pokémon.

Incidentally, Pokémon like these make excellent sleep companions.

Besides their singing abilities, their soft and pleasant fur is another major factor.

Many people enjoy sleeping while hugging Wigglytuff or Jigglypuff.

Of course, it's generally not recommended to hug the latter.

You can't be sure whether your face will look normal the next morning.

As for Wigglytuff, evolving it just requires a Moon Stone.

Compared to that, the occasional overinflation until it becomes larger than a person isn't that big a deal.

After all, hugging a life-sized cushion isn't so bad.

Most people don't even get that chance.

However, neither Clefable nor Wigglytuff specializes in sustained flight. Carrying a person each while dodging falling debris proved extremely difficult.

The two women were struck by wooden fragments from time to time.

Fortunately, it was only messy, not seriously injurious.

Wooden construction did have one advantage in that regard.

The only issue was that this advantage only became apparent during collapse making it somewhat ironic.

During the chaos, a bit of skin was inevitably exposed.

It was late May, no one wore thick layers to record in a studio.

But in the panic, they didn't even have time to fix their appearance.

What felt like a long time in midair was likely only a few seconds.

Soon, the three landed on solid ground.

"Gigalith!"

The moment he hit the ground, Silas shouted.

A flash of red light—

"Rumble—"

Several massive boulders materialized above the group.

"Gigalith!"

The cry came a split second later.

"Get close to me!"

Seeing everyone land, Silas shouted urgently.

What were they standing around for? He couldn't have Gigalith hold the ceiling up forever.

Silas understood clearly—

The scattered debris was only the beginning.

Once the entire Radio Tower collapsed, the impact force wouldn't be something Gigalith could stop by merely suspending rocks overhead.

"O-Okay!"

Hearing his shout, everyone hurried toward him.

He quickly counted.

Besides himself, Whitney, and Mary, there were three others on the ground.

An elderly man, a middle-aged man, and the young woman.

"Alright, hold your breath!"

Silas yelled again.

In this environment, anything less than shouting wouldn't be heard.

He didn't hesitate.

"Gigalith, Rock Tomb!"

More rocks appeared.

This time, they didn't simply float overhead.

Massive boulders dropped and formed a circular wall around the group and their Pokémon.

Dust exploded outward.

Now everyone understood why Silas had told them to hold their breath.

With this much debris in the air, their lungs would give out before the building crushed them.

"Lower it!"

It wasn't over yet.

Silas commanded Gigalith to bring down the rocks that had been suspended above.

With that, a crude stone shelter was formed.

Putting on a dust-filtering respirator mask from his gear, Silas tossed another Poké Ball.

"Serperior, you're up next, full power Grassy Terrain!"

In the darkness, green light flared.

Countless small plants sprouted through the cracks between the rocks.

Then thicker vines.

Finally, a few young saplings.

Seeing Serperior preparing to grow even more vegetation, Silas quickly stopped it.

"That's enough!"

Serperior sighed in relief and ceased using Grassy Terrain.

It had thought "full power" meant pushing itself recklessly.

In such a short time, even producing a single large tree would be extremely difficult.

After all, it was only at quasi-Elite level strength.

Even an Elite-level Pokémon would struggle to create massive trees from nothing in moments.

Perhaps only Pokémon at Champion-tier or above could achieve that.

"Blaziken, return. Ampharos, light this place up."

Noticing the dimness inside the stone shelter, Silas recalled Blaziken and sent out Ampharos.

The blue orb at the tip of Ampharos's tail emitted bright light.

Though Blaziken, Gigalith, and Serperior could each provide faint illumination, none compared to Ampharos in that regard.

The stunned group finally regained their senses under the glow.

"Director! Deputy Director!"

Mary called out anxiously.

Silas glanced over.

The elderly man and middle-aged man must be the station director and deputy director.

That made sense.

From the current survivors, it was clear that staff on the lower three floors had evacuated in time.

If Silas and the others hadn't been delayed on the fourth floor, they likely could have escaped as well. People in the Pokémon world generally have strong physical conditioning.

But those on the fifth floor had been in an awkward position.

Due to structural constraints, they couldn't evacuate as quickly as the lower floors.

"Radio Tower… our Goldenrod Radio Tower…"

Watching the elderly director burst into tears, Silas wasn't entirely sure he had wanted to evacuate at all.

"My goodness… you're incredible!"

Whether she was simply carefree or just naturally airheaded, Whitney showed no fear or sadness at all. Instead, she touched the plants lining the stone shelter and began marveling at Silas and his Pokémon's handiwork.

Silas thought to himself, though he had transmigrated into this world, infrastructure construction skills were etched into his soul.

Something like this? He didn't even need to think about it.

"Oh right—Gigalith, form a few thick stone pillars. Make them denser than before."

He pointed around the structure.

"Place them diagonally here, here, and here to reinforce it."

Gigalith nodded.

However, forming pillars wasn't nearly as easy as creating irregular stone blocks—especially with the added requirement of increased density.

The rocks it had summoned earlier were hastily generated and uneven.

If Serperior hadn't filled the gaps with vegetation, the stone shelter would have had many sizable openings.

Gigalith retreated to a corner and began painstakingly condensing dense stone pillars.

Silas nodded in satisfaction.

That should do it.

Seeing that the protective measures were complete, the middle-aged deputy director, who had been comforting the elderly director, walked over.

"Thank you so much. If it weren't for you, the director and I might have died here."

His words were filled with gratitude.

Silas quickly waved it off.

After a brief conversation, he learned they hadn't lacked the intention to evacuate.

"I had already noticed structural instability in the Radio Tower," the deputy director sighed. "That's why we requested Gym Leader Whitney's help in constructing a new station.

We just didn't expect it to collapse so suddenly.

I was in the director's office discussing upcoming programming when the ceiling shattered.

I tried to take him through the emergency exit.

But he insisted the tower wouldn't collapse so easily, said it was just a minor issue.

That delay cost us our chance to escape."

Silas could understand that.

But accepting it? Not so much.

The director had been a liability in that moment.

Still… if the place where he had lived and worked his entire life were collapsing—especially while he was in charge, Silas suspected he might have reacted the same way.

Then why hadn't the deputy director escaped alone?

Silas wondered.

"Because director is his father."

Whitney answered his unspoken question.

Ah.

That settled it.

As a son, how could he abandon his father?

Looking at the elderly director still struggling to accept reality, Silas sighed.

Perhaps it was precisely that passion that had allowed this director to elevate the already-thriving Goldenrod Radio Tower to even greater heights.

Over twenty years ago, even before he assumed the role, the station had already been the most prestigious broadcaster in Johto.

It wasn't an exaggeration to say that nine out of ten Johto households tuned in to Goldenrod Radio for their morning programs.

But that wasn't enough.

After all, a regional station's influence has limits.

After taking office, the director implemented a series of bold strategies that transformed Goldenrod Radio into a global broadcaster.

Not only Johto, but Kanto, Hoenn, Sinnoh—and even distant Unova, now had many loyal listeners.

Professor Oak's Pokémon Talk program, for instance, thrived largely due to his strong support.

"It should be fine now. With Goldenrod City's municipal efficiency, we'll be out in at most two or three hours."

Whitney remained remarkably calm.

Pokémon are incredibly useful in situations like this.

Rock-types, Ground-types, Fighting-types—they excel at clearing collapsed structures.

Especially with Silas's meticulous protective measures.

"The air in here…"

Deputy Director hesitated.

Though he wasn't a Trainer, and despite his status, he felt compelled to voice concern.

The enclosed stone shelter wasn't large, and there were six people plus several Pokémon inside.

Breathing could become a problem.

"It's fine. Serperior can regulate the plants to release oxygen," Silas replied calmly. "And I have three compressed oxygen tanks in my spatial backpack. If necessary, that's enough for six people to last three to four hours.

I trust Goldenrod City's rescue teams aren't that slow."

Deputy director visibly relaxed.

Of course they wouldn't be.

Even if Whitney's estimate was optimistic, the difference wouldn't be much.

The Goldenrod Radio Tower stood in the city center.

Rescue teams were likely dispatched the moment it collapsed.

By now, they were probably already clearing debris.

"But… why do you have three compressed oxygen tanks in your backpack?"

Whitney asked the question everyone was thinking.

"Preparedness," Silas shrugged casually.

As someone who spent years working in the wild as a bounty hunter, carrying oxygen tanks wasn't strange at all.

Whether diving or exploring, they were invaluable.

In fact, his largest commercially available spatial backpack was filled with all sorts of items, both expected and unexpected ready for emergencies.

Besides, even without oxygen tanks, Ampharos could theoretically generate oxygen.

Though that method was somewhat risky.

Silence soon filled the stone shelter.

Only Mary and deputy director continued comforting the emotionally fragile director.

The director did thank Silas sincerely, but almost immediately broke down again.

Silas figured it might be better if he didn't thank him at all.

Outside, the collapse appeared to have fully concluded.

No violent tremors had occurred for quite some time.

Thanks to Gigalith and Serperior's combined efforts, no one inside the shelter had suffered further harm.

Even the minor injuries on the director and deputy director were eased by Serperior's Grassy Terrain.

Given their physical resilience and modern medical technology, they would recover quickly once outside.

Three hours passed quietly.

Silas even finished drafting Ralts's three-month training plan.

Meanwhile, rescue had yet to arrive.

"Clef~"

Watching Whitney playing with Clefable, Silas couldn't help thinking her heart was truly big.

"Hm? What's wrong?"

Whitney turned, noticing his gaze.

"Nothing."

Silas replied dryly.

The others chuckled softly.

They were used to Whitney's personality.

Apparently, their savior was not.

Thud.

A sound from above instantly silenced everyone.

Thud. Thud.

Several more dull impacts followed.

"Move to the side."

Silas's steady voice rang out.

The five others obeyed instinctively.

His eyes met Gigalith's.

"Gigalith!"

With its cry, the rock ceiling above began to open.

Sand and dust rained down.

"Over here! We're here!"
