Chapter 52 - Old Ghosts and New Eyes

Chapter 52 – Old Ghosts and New Eyes

[06:42 AM – Inside the hideout, Shanghai District 9]

The morning air was crisp, filtered through the hidden ventilation ducts of Gerard's safehouse. Outside, smog coated the city skyline like a silk veil over rotting porcelain, but inside, the world was calm, silent—perfect for ghosts.

Gerard sat alone in front of a rust-colored steel desk. The soft blue light of a floating interface hovered before him, its edges flickering like firelight.

> [Daily Sign-In Successful.]

Reward: Memory Thread – "The Fall of Chairman Li."

The words burned across his retinas, and the system didn't wait. The blue light dissolved into raw sensation—a tide of Li Xian's grief, humiliation, and helpless rage rushed through him.

[Flashback Begins – 4 Years Ago]

Li Wenhao had been a titan—Chairman of a defense conglomerate with contracts stretching across three continents. He was power wrapped in principle.

Until the scandal.

In the echo of the courtroom, the last image Li Xian had of his father was a man in a tailored prison uniform, hands cuffed, eyes dry but hollow.

No one looked at Li Xian the same way after that.

Classmates whispered. Teachers ignored him. Meiying sneered. Madam Wei smiled like a snake watching prey bleed.

And then, one day, Madam Wei sat down across from him at the breakfast table and slid a contract forward.

> "Sign. You'll still be wealthy. You just won't inherit the company."

[Flashback Ends]

Gerard blinked as the sensation receded, sharp and acidic in his lungs. "They destroyed him," he muttered. "And then they buried his son in silence."

He accessed the Mission Log, the interface rearranging itself like a living thing.

> [Mission Generated: Begin the Echo]

Objective: Madam Wei must experience the same helplessness as Li Xian—admit her to an institution under her own name.

Reward: Skill Shard – "Psychological Warfare Lv1" + $10,000 in system credits.

He grinned slowly.

Madam Wei wouldn't just fall—she would shatter.

[08:13 AM – Central Shanghai Mental Wellness Center]

A nondescript black van idled outside the psychiatric facility where Li Xian had been institutionalized. Inside, Gerard watched from tinted windows as orderlies wheeled patients through courtyard gardens, the same benches where he once watched birds that didn't exist.

"I wonder," he whispered, "how Madam Wei will enjoy the view."

The plan had been simple but elegant—leaked phone recordings spliced with hallucinatory behavior reports, all planted through Horizon's ghost networks. Doctors had already received anonymous tip-offs. One more outburst, and she'd be eligible for a full psych evaluation.

Gerard had sent her just the right invitation.

---

[10:45 AM – Wei Family Estate]

The Wei estate was built on decadence. Imported marble floors from Spain. Gold-gilded dragon motifs hand-carved into mahogany. Every corner screamed wealth that no longer meant invincibility.

Madam Wei stood in her robe, screaming at invisible threats—Gerard's cyber illusions worked perfectly.

"You think you can trick me? I know it's you, Li Xian! I know you're watching me! You're DEAD!"

The help watched from a distance, frozen. A maid called emergency services. Within twenty minutes, sedatives entered her bloodstream and her words turned to slurred whimpers.

They carried her out past the koi pond she'd had custom-built. The fish didn't look up.

[12:00 PM – Hideout]

> [Mission Complete – Begin the Echo]

Reward Claimed.

New Skill Acquired: Psychological Warfare Lv1 – Gain +10% effectiveness in fear, panic, and influence-based tactics.

Balance updated: $10,000 system credits.

Gerard closed the notification with a flick of his finger.

A small file folder popped up seconds later, labeled simply: "Meiying – Social Profile Analysis"

He opened it and scanned. Her reputation was tanking. Social media was ablaze with speculation, rumors, scandal. Former friends were unfollowing her like rats abandoning a flooded ship.

She wouldn't be far behind her mother.

[02:30 PM – Same Day, Somewhere Else in the City]

Jian sat in an internet café, eyes twitching as he stared at a different blue screen than Gerard's. The lines of code inside it pulsed like veins.

> "He's accelerating."

"Then break him," whispered a voice only he could hear.

Jian smiled, eyes bloodshot.

[04:19 PM – Gerard's Hideout]

Gerard opened the blinds slightly, allowing a spear of dying sunlight to cut across the room. He wasn't smiling anymore.

He was still for a long time, then leaned back.

> "One down. Two more to go."

"And then," he said quietly, "we start the real war."
