Chapter 15 - The Blood-Sun’s Warning

The sunrise over Aetheria wasn't gold; it was a bruised, violent crimson.

Chase stood by the window of Lyra's sanctum, watching the light hit the floating spires. His reflection in the glass was unsettling. The golden hue in his eyes hadn't fully receded, and the white at his roots had climbed an inch higher. He looked less like a boy and more like a ghost being slowly filled with ink.

A Master's Guidance

"You can't stay here," Lyra said, her voice gravelly from lack of sleep. She was busy scrubbing a faint violet stain—mana residue—off the floor where Chase had hidden. "The morning bells will ring in ten minutes. If you aren't in your bed when the dorm monitors do their rounds, Vane will have his excuse to detain you."

She handed him a heavy, grey cloak. "This is enchanted with a 'mortal' weave. It will help dampen the coldness coming off that scabbard, but it won't hide you from a physical search. Keep your head down, Chase. Today, the Academy will be a hornet's nest."

The Gauntlet of Eyes

Walking back to the North Wing was like navigating a dream. The Academy was already buzzing. Groups of Knights in silver tabards were everywhere, their halberds clicking against the stone as they patrolled the corridors.

As Chase rounded the corner to the boy's dormitories, he saw Julian. The noble boy was standing by the entrance, looking disheveled and pale. He was staring at the spot where Chase had collapsed the night before.

When Julian saw Chase approaching—walking slowly, his face like stone—he didn't sneer. He didn't move. He simply stepped aside, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and obsession.

"You... you're still alive," Julian whispered as Chase passed.

Chase didn't stop. He didn't even look at him. But the [Whispers] in his head laughed. "He smells the rot on us, little spark. He's already broken."

The Ledger's New Command

Once inside the safety of his room, Chase locked the door and pulled the [Ledger of the Usurper] from his bag. The pages were no longer white; they were turning the color of old bone.

A new entry was forming, the ink bubbling onto the page as if being written by an invisible hand.

[Urgent Quest: The Whispering Garden]

Objective: Locate the 'Heart of the Willow' in the Academy's Forbidden Arboretum.

Clue: The Scabbard is hollow. A sheath without a soul is just a shroud. Find the wood that remembers the First General.

Warning: The Arboretum is guarded by the 'Lunar Sentinels'. They do not sleep.

The Weight of the Shroud

Chase sat on his bed, the [Scabbard of Broken Oaths] heavy against his thigh. He realized now that he wasn't just a student or a survivor anymore. He was a scavenger, picking through the ruins of his own past life while the entire world tried to hunt him down.

The bells finally rang, a deep, resonant bronze sound that vibrated through his bones.

"I'm coming for the rest," Chase whispered to the empty room.

The Scabbard pulsed once, a cold, dark beat that sent a shiver of power through his fingers. He stood up, adjusted his "Lamb's Skin" mask, and headed out for his first class of the day: Herbology and Mana-Plants.

The irony wasn't lost on him. He was going to spend his morning learning about flowers, and his evening planning to infiltrate the most dangerous garden in the world.

As Chase prepares for his move on the Arboretum, a new complication arises:
