Chapter 1 - Awakening

The air in the dormitory grew heavy, the oxygen seemingly replaced by a static charge that made the fine hairs on Chase's arms stand on end. He stared at his hands—small, calloused from chores, and trembling—and for a split second, the skin seemed to turn translucent, revealing veins that pulsed not with red blood, but with a faint, rhythmic violet light.

Then, the world flickered.

The Awakening

A cold, mechanical chime rang directly inside his skull. It wasn't a sound heard with ears, but a vibration felt in the very marrow of his bones.

Chase choked back a gasp, his hands flying to his mouth. Across the room, little Leo stirred in his sleep, mumbling about extra bread, but didn't wake. The world around Chase hadn't changed, yet a shimmering semi-transparent screen now hung in the air, defiant of the darkness.

The First Insight

He reached out a finger, hesitant. As he touched the glowing text, a surge of information flooded his mind—not in words, but in raw, visceral sensations. He saw a great obsidian tower piercing the clouds of a different world, and felt the weight of a crown he had never worn.

The Shadow in the Corner

As the system stabilized, the shadows in the corner of the room began to pool together. They didn't move like natural darkness; they drifted like ink in water, coalescing into a shape that was far too tall for the low-ceilinged attic.

A pair of hollow, glowing eyes opened within the gloom.

"So," a voice rasped, sounding like grinding stones. "The spark didn't go out. It just hid in the trash."

Chase's "wrongness" suddenly shifted into pure instinct. He didn't know how he knew, but he understood that the figure in the corner wasn't a ghost—it was a Scavenger, a bottom-feeder of the Labyrinth that had followed the scent of his awakening soul across the veil.

The creature stepped forward, its claws scraping against the wooden floorboards. Chase backed away until his spine hit the cold stone of the window frame. The rain outside turned to hail, drumming a frantic war-beat against the glass.

He was a seven-year-old boy. He was an orphan. He was terrified.

But as the creature lunged, Chase didn't scream. Instead, he felt a cold, ancient command rise up from his throat, a language he shouldn't know but understood perfectly.

"Kneel," he whispered.

The room groaned. The floorboards under the creature's feet didn't just creak—they shattered as an invisible pressure slammed the shadow-beast into the wood.

Chase stared, his sea-storm eyes widening as the violet light in his veins flared bright. The "wrongness" was gone, replaced by a terrifying, hollow certainty. He wasn't just Chase anymore. He was the beginning of something that would eventually swallow the world.
