"Evander is back; why are you home from work so early today?"
Worried her straightforward daughter might say something that could spark an argument, Juliana Lancaster quickly changed the subject.
She opened the shoe cabinet to get slippers, but Evander Lancaster stopped her.
"Mom, you're the elder here, why are you serving me? Please, go sit on the sofa; I'll do it myself."
"You child, it's just a pair of slippers, no need for so much fuss." Juliana Lancaster laughed and straightened up, watching Evander change into the slippers before turning to walk to the kitchen.
"Evander, take a break first. I didn't know you'd be back so early; dinner's not ready yet."
"Mom, just start cooking the rice; I'll make the dishes later." Evander Lancaster shouted to his mother-in-law's back as she entered the kitchen, muttering, "You've been working hard all day, I'll do it."
