(Adam POV)
The "date" with Saki ended in a rather... unexpected way.
I honestly didn't think she'd build up enough confidence to do that. A hug, maybe—but a kiss?
That completely surpassed my expectations.
And needless to say, it wasn't part of the plan.
It feels foolish not to have considered this outcome... No, there's no point lying to myself. I did consider it.
In the original story, Saki agreed to go out with a good-looking stranger without resistance, and gave in to his advances with ridiculous ease.
She was already hooked the moment Hayato complimented her.
How would it be any different with me? I not only complimented her—I praised her, protected her, and treated her with care.
I knew this might happen… and I chose to ignore it.
It's a bit hypocritical to feel bad about it, especially since making her dependent on me was my main strategy from the beginning... but it is what it is.
Still, if I'm being honest… I don't really know how I feel.
This paternal instinct, this burning need to protect those with my blood—my descendants, my children—still lingers deep inside me. It's like an uncontrollable drive, the primal urge to safeguard one's offspring.
But there's also the other side of me—the one that lived as an ordinary human and never had trouble forming bonds with women.
When Saki kissed me, those two sides clashed—not like two separate consciences (after all, I'm the perfect fusion of both souls), but like two deeply ingrained ideas battling in my mind.
Like a child raised to believe that killing is the ultimate sin, who eventually must kill to survive.
Technically, there's nothing wrong with being with Saki—our bloodlines are so distant that calling us related would be a stretch.
But still, as the first man—the one who fathered humanity alongside Eve—this sense of wrongness keeps nagging at me.
…In the end, it's something I still need to reflect on. Not just with Saki, but with Asia too.
Her fixation on me might still just be intense admiration after I saved her, but I have no doubt it could grow into something more... I just hope I'll have an answer by then.
And about my scent… Koneko mentioned it, and I keep thinking about it. I don't smell anything unusual, even with my sharp senses—but I do feel like something is off.
Koneko thought I was a Youkai. So if anyone can help me with this, it would be them.
Luckily, I've never had any conflicts with those nature spirits. In fact, I've always had a good relationship with every one I met.
Unlike Fallen Angels or Devils, they never wronged me… and their scent was never as repulsive as those two.
Pigeons and sulfur... Even when they try to mask the smell with a bath, I can always catch the faintest trace.
A skill honed after 10,000 years of hunting them… Not my favorite ability, but useful nonetheless.
"Adam."
Lately, though, I wonder if those smells come more from my prejudice than reality... But what can I do about that? It's not like I still hate them.
"Adam."
Well… maybe not as much as I used to. Some Devils are actually pleasant—like Rias and her group.
"Adam."
As for Fallen Angels… Honestly, I don't remember meeting even one who was pleasant.
But then again, I never really talked to them. It was usually just the sound of clashing blades… and the blood that followed.
"Adam!"
I blinked—pulled back to reality by a voice that still felt somewhat unfamiliar. My eyes turned toward the source and landed on a blonde girl in a lolita dress—her petite frame being her most distinct feature.
Mittelt, the Fallen Angel I'd managed to subdue.
It was honestly surprising to see her here. I half-expected her to betray me the moment I sent her back to the church.
But when I arrived and saw her waiting with Asia, I couldn't help but feel a little… moved?
Sure, I know she did it out of fear—but can I really not feel pleased that she feared me more than her leader?
Besides, it's better this way. Not only for her—since she gets to live—but for me too, since it simplifies my plan.
"Yes, Mittelt?" I addressed her by name. Even if she's technically my servant through force, I don't mind her using my name.
Though being called "Master" doesn't sound so bad… I'm not that much of a sadist. I know Fallen Angels have their pride, and while I do want to crush it piece by piece, I wouldn't mind having Mittelt as a genuine ally.
"It's almost time... We should go," she said, her voice barely hiding her nerves.
I could tell she was uneasy about the delay. It seemed that, even though she feared me, the fear ingrained by her leader still had a hold on her.
But, well, it's not like she's being forced to do this. I didn't dig too deep into her motivations, but I know her goal is to gain favor with the current leader of the Fallen Angels.
Azazel.
A name I'm familiar with—but never had the displeasure of meeting.
And now, I don't plan to. He doesn't even know about Raynare's plans. With the factions currently at peace, I have no intention of being the one to stir conflict.
This entire situation is better left in the shadows.
"Alright." I looked toward the wall clock—8:00 PM was fast approaching. I saw Mittelt let out a sigh of relief at my response, and couldn't help but chuckle softly.
"What?" She noticed, her eyes narrowing.
"…You almost seem more eager than I am to take Raynare down. What is it? Enjoying your new job?" I teased.
"What?" Her reaction was predictable—the embarrassment evident as she vigorously shook her head. "N-No! I just… want to stick to the… schedule."
I blinked.
What kind of excuse was that?
"Sure, sure." I held back a laugh. "Let's go then."
I stood up, getting ready to leave.
"Where are you two going?"
But just as I turned to the door, another voice made its presence known. I turned to see Asia standing at the top of the stairs.
Her green eyes stared right into my soul.
An intimidating gaze that… surprised me for the third time that day.
Sweet little Asia… really capable of giving a look like that? What's going on?
"Well…" I scratched my neck, glancing at Mittelt—only to see the Fallen Angel looking away.
Even she seemed intimidated.
"Mittelt got a message from a relative, so I'm just accompanying her. Right, Mittelt?"
Asia's eyes turned to her, and I was treated to the amusing sight of a nervous Fallen Angel sweating bullets. "Y-Yes."
"..."
An awkward silence filled the room as Asia seemed to study us, trying to determine if we were lying.
"Well, if that's the case…" Thankfully, a bright smile bloomed on her face—her sweet and gentle demeanor returning. "Be safe, okay?"
Mittelt sighed in relief, and I smiled in return. "Thanks, Asia. We'll be back soon."
And with that, we left the house.
Time to put our long-awaited plan into motion.
"Did you bring the bag?"
I asked, and in response, a sack materialized in Mittelt's hands in a shimmer of light.
Which honestly surprised me.
"...How did you do that?"
Mittelt looked puzzled. "You can't?"
"I told you—I'm not an angel."
"Oh, right. You have so much holy power in you, I keep forgetting… Are you sure you're not an angel?"
I blinked. Holy power? First chakra, then mana… and now I have abundant holy energy too?
That's… intriguing.
"I'm sure..." I paused for a moment.
"…But once this is over, teach me how to use it."
