---Then---
Haku reached into his pouch for a sealing scroll to bind Ganri fully when a sudden shift in the air pressure alerted him.
It wasn't Alaric.
It was a massive chakra signature, dark and oppressive, approaching from the tree line. It wasn't subtle; it was a storm front rolling in, laced with killing intent that made the forest leaves rustle unnaturally. Haku's senses, honed from blindfolded training, picked up the displacement before the figure emerged.
A pair of green eyes glowed in the darkness.
A low, rumbling voice cut through the night.
"Step away from the bounty, boy. That's my mark."
---Now - Forest Clearing - Tanzaku Gai Outskirts---
A low, rumbling voice cut through the night, heavy with greed and ancient malice.
"Step away from the bounty, boy. That's my mark."
From the shadows of the tree line stepped a towering man. His form was cloaked in a long black robe adorned with red clouds… distinct, ominous patterns that triggered a memory buried deep in Haku's mind from Alaric's late-night strategy lessons.
The Akatsuki. High threat level. Do not engage unless necessary.
It was an organization of S-rank criminals not yet known to the public, each a walking catastrophe. Alaric had drilled him on the members: Pain, the leader with god-like eyes; Itachi Uchiha, the clan killer; Kisame Hoshigaki, the Tailed Beast without a tail.
And this one.
Kakuzu. The immortal bounty hunter from Takigakure. A veteran of wars older than most hidden villages. Alaric's dossier had been specific: Five hearts, each controlling a different elemental nature. Near-immortal, regenerating from fatal wounds by stealing organs. Weaknesses: All hearts must be destroyed; his threads can be severed with molecular-level cutting; tends to rely on brute force and durability.
Haku's eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn't show surprise. To the outside observer, he was calm. Inside, his mind was racing, cataloging escape routes and kill angles.
No one else knew this intruder's identity... not Ganri, who was barely conscious in his ice prison, and certainly not the distant townsfolk. But Haku knew enough.
This was no random interruption. Kakuzu had likely been tracking Ganri for a week, drawn by the same twenty-million Ryo price tag. The Akatsuki member exuded an aura of oppressive dread, his stitched-together body a patchwork of scars and foreign flesh, his green eyes glowing with avarice.
Ganri chuckled weakly, coughing up a mist of frozen blood. "Heh... reinforcements? Or just another vulture?"
Kakuzu ignored him entirely. His gaze was fixed on Haku.
"I've tracked that explosive fool for seven days," Kakuzu stated, stepping into the moonlight. "The bounty is mine. Move, or I'll collect yours too... if you have one."
Haku's polite smile didn't waver, but internally, his resolve hardened into diamond.
Ganri was his bounty. His test.
Alaric hadn't intervened. He was still up there, watching. That meant this was part of the exam: a test of fighting prowess or decision-making. Retreat? Negotiate? Or fight?
Haku chose the latter. He wouldn't yield. Perfection demanded he secure the prize, no matter who stood in his way.
"I'm afraid I can't do that," Haku replied softly, his voice as calm as a frozen lake in winter. He shifted his stance, the Kusanagi humming with chakra. "This target is mine. If you insist on taking him... then prove your claim."
Kakuzu's lips curled into a sneer beneath his mask. The threads under his skin began to writhe like worms.
"Arrogant brat," Kakuzu grunted. "Fine... I'll take your heart as a bonus. A young heart usually pumps stronger."
He didn't know Haku. He saw only a slender youth with unusual speed. But greed drove him; bounties were currency, and this interruption was just another payout waiting to be collected.
The real fight ignited in the clearing, the forest trembling as the two clashed.
Kakuzu moved first, not wanting to waste time on a child. His Earth Grudge Fear threads erupted from his sleeves like black serpents, lashing out to ensnare Haku. Each thread was tipped with chakra-infused barbs, capable of piercing steel and stealing organs in a heartbeat.
Zip.
Haku activated Zero Friction in a burst, sliding away like a ghost on ice. His speed surpassed even the threads' extension speed. He flanked Kakuzu instantly.
"Wind Style: Great Breakthrough!"
Haku channeled a massive gust of wind through his palm, slamming it into Kakuzu's side.
The wind shredded leaves and uprooted small trees, but Kakuzu simply dug his feet into the ground. His skin darkened to the color of obsidian. Earth Release: Earth Spear. He tanked the A-rank jutsu without flinching.
"Not bad," Kakuzu grunted, dusting off his cloak. "But playtime's over."
The robe on his back tore open. Four masks emerged, black monstrosities made of threads. One of them… the Lightning mask… detached and stood on its own.
"Lightning Release: False Darkness!"
The mask opened its mouth. A spear of crackling electricity, bright as a sun flare, lanced toward Haku at blinding speed.
Haku's pre-cognitive senses tingled... the air ionized a split second before the strike.
Ice Release: Mirror Step.
He didn't just dodge; he summoned a partial dome of Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals. The mirrors angled perfectly. The lightning bolt slammed into the first mirror, bounced to the second, and arched back toward Kakuzu.
Kakuzu caught the bolt with one hand, absorbing it harmlessly back into his Lightning heart.
"Clever trick," Kakuzu admitted, his eyes narrowing. "But mirrors shatter."
He charged. Threads whipped in a frenzy, turning the air into a meat grinder. His Fire mask detached, floating above him.
"Fire Release: Intelligent Hard Work!"
A barrage of small, intense fireballs rained down, scorching the earth and melting the ice mirrors.
Haku weaved through the inferno. His modified Madara-Style kata flowed seamlessly… strike, freeze, reposition. He closed the gap briefly, his Kusanagi flashing with a teal glow.
Wind Infusion.
He slashed at the threads. The blade, attuned to Wind for molecular cutting, severed several strands cleanly. Black ichor sprayed from the severed tendrils.
"You know my weaknesses?" Kakuzu snarled, surprise flickering in his eyes. He hadn't expected precision targeting from a kid.
A stray thread, moving faster than the rest, grazed Haku's arm. It tore through the fabric and drew a shallow cut across his bicep.
It was small, but pain flared hot and sharp.
Haku ignored it. His aura remained unbroken, a radiant teal halo of determination. He pressed on, his large reserves and perfect control sustaining him.
'Ice Release: Ice Hammer!'
Haku retaliated instantly. He leaped above Kakuzu, forming the massive ice construct in mid-air. He slammed it down with Tailed-Beast-level force.
"Earth Release: Domed Wall!"
Kakuzu crossed his arms. A barrier of rock erupted.
BOOM!
The hammer shattered the rock barrier. Shards of ice and stone peppered Kakuzu. One shard pierced his shoulder, but he ripped it out, his threads stitching the wound shut as his Water heart regenerated the tissue.
"You're annoying!" Kakuzu roared.
The fight intensified. Kakuzu combined his Wind and Fire masks. A scorching gale of fire… a true firestorm… engulfed the clearing.
"Water Style: Water Dragon!"
Haku drew moisture from the deep earth, forming a roaring serpent that crashed into the firestorm.
HISSSSSS.
A massive steam explosion obscured the field.
Emerging from the mist like a wraith, Haku clapped his hands.
"Ice Release: Ice Rain!"
Millions of needles pierced Kakuzu's cloak. Most bounced off his hardened skin, but Haku aimed for the masks. A targeted volley struck the Wind Mask, shattering the porcelain face. The black monster dissolved into threads.
"One," Haku counted calmly.
Kakuzu roared, the pain of the lost heart fueling his rage. "You'll pay for that!"
He unleashed a multi-element combo: Lightning to stun, Earth to trap, Fire to burn. A stray bolt of lightning clipped Haku's leg, bypassing his dodge by a millimeter.
"Guh!"
Haku skidded, his leg going numb. Blood trickled from the wound.
Kakuzu lunged, sensing blood.
Haku's eyes sharpened. He channeled chakra into his leg, freezing the nerves to dull the pain and creating an external brace of ice to support the muscle.
Zero Friction.
He burst forward, closing the distance before Kakuzu could retract his threads. He channeled wind chakra into the Kusanagi until it whined like a banshee.
He slashed. A flurry of strikes severed the thread-defense. He targeted the Fire Mask.
SHING.
A thrust pierced the mask. It exploded in flames before dissolving.
Two hearts down.
Kakuzu staggered. His immortality was waning. "You... how!?"
He fought on with veteran ferocity. Threads lashed out in a desperate net. One wrapped around Haku's left arm and squeezed.
CRACK.
Bone fractured.
Agony shot through Haku, white-hot and blinding. But his aura held firm… polite resolve turning into fierce determination.
He froze the thread on contact with Ice Release, shattering it into dust.
"Ice Rock Dome of Magnificent Nothingness!"
He summoned the dome around himself to tank Kakuzu's next elemental barrage. Explosions rocked the ice, but it held.
From the safety of the dome, Haku reached into his pouch. He pulled out a scroll Alaric had given him for "emergencies involving scary immortals."
He emerged with a feint.
"Fuinjutsu: Chakra Binding Chain!"
He slapped the scroll onto the ground. Golden chains erupted, wrapping around Kakuzu's ankles. It was a Level 3 seal… not strong enough to hold him forever, but enough to disrupt his chakra flow for ten seconds.
Kakuzu froze, his remaining masks flickering. "Sealing jutsu!?"
"Now!"
Haku, injured but unbowed, combined his elements.
"Water Style: Shark Bomb... Ice Infusion!"
He launched the shark missile through a "Wind Dragon" vortex to increase its speed. The projectile slammed into Kakuzu's chest, where the Earth and Water hearts resided.
CRUNCH.
The impact was devastating. The frozen shark tore through the hardened skin that was weakened by the seal and shattered both masks in a spray of black threads.
Only the Lightning heart remained… the main body.
Kakuzu, reduced to his base form, threads fraying, blood pouring from his mouth, lunged one last time. His eyes were wide with disbelief and hatred. "D-D-Damn you...!"
Haku met him.
He didn't shout. He didn't scream.
He delivered a polite, final slash.
The Kusanagi, coated in absolute zero chakra, passed through Kakuzu's chest, piercing the final heart.
"Ice Release: Ice Fang."
Jagged crystals erupted from the wound, encasing Kakuzu's body in a coffin of ice before he could even try to regenerate.
The immortal froze, his expression locked in a final grimace of rage.
"…"
Silence returned to the forest.
Haku stood for a moment, his sword dripping with condensation. Then, his legs gave out.
He knelt, breathing heavily. His arm throbbed where the bone was cracked. His leg burned. His chakra was dangerously low.
"Bounty... secured," Haku whispered, looking at the frozen statue of the Akatsuki member and the encased Ganri nearby.
High above, in the stratosphere, Alaric watched the conclusion. He took the cigar from his mouth, a look of genuine pride… and perhaps a little shock… on his face.
"Well I'll be damned..." Alaric muttered, blowing a smoke ring that drifted toward the moon. "I knew he was good. But taking down Kakuzu solo? This kid's a Kage-level shinobi at this age already."
Alaric folded his arms, beginning his descent.
"Looks I got no cut from the bounty and owe him a very expensive dinner."
