Chapter 54 - Chapter 53: A Sober Promise 2

Mo Shian had heard her begging him not to leave. He had also heard her apologize repeatedly.

He did not know what she was seeing in those nightmares, but they terrified her.

"Did something happen that you haven't told me?"

Weiwei felt her throat tighten.

Something had happened.

He had died in her arms while apologizing because he could no longer protect her.

She had watched the light disappear from his eyes and lived for an entire week in a world without him.

Even though he was alive now and sitting beside her, the pain remained.

She suddenly moved forward and wrapped her arms around his waist.

Mo Shian stiffened before immediately embracing her.

Weiwei pressed her face against his chest. His heartbeat was strong and steady beneath her ear.

It reassured her that he was alive.

"There are some things I don't know how to explain yet," she whispered.

Mo Shian's arms tightened.

"Are you in danger?"

"No."

"Is someone threatening you?"

"No."

"Did someone hurt you?"

Weiwei thought of the cliff and the betrayal, but shook her head.

"Not in this life."

The words left her mouth before she could stop them.

Mo Shian frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Weiwei's heart skipped a beat.

She had almost exposed herself.

"I mean no one has hurt me recently," she corrected. "I have just been thinking about what could happen if I continued trusting the wrong people and pushing you away. I realized that I might lose everything before understanding what truly mattered."

That was not the complete truth, but it was not a lie either.

Mo Shian remained silent.

Weiwei pulled back slightly and looked into his eyes.

"I am not hiding another man from you. I am not planning to leave, and I am not approaching you because I want something from the Mo family."

"Everything belonging to the Mo family already belongs to you."

"That isn't the point."

"I know."

Mo Shian gently brushed the hair away from her face.

"I won't force you to tell me something you aren't ready to share."

Relief passed through Weiwei, but it was quickly replaced by guilt.

Mo Shian saw it and continued, "But promise me that if whatever you're hiding places you in danger, you will tell me immediately."

"I promise."

"You won't try to handle it alone?"

"I won't."

"You won't disappear without telling me?"

"I won't."

"You won't ask for a divorce?"

Weiwei looked at him helplessly.

"How did we go from danger to divorce?"

"It is still an important question."

"I will not ask for a divorce."

"Not today or ever?"

"Not today, tomorrow, or in this lifetime."

The answer seemed to loosen something inside Mo Shian.

His eyes became slightly red, but he looked away before Weiwei could examine them closely.

She knew that he did not want her to see how deeply her words affected him.

Weiwei lifted his chin and forced him to look at her again.

"I know words are not enough. I caused the wounds in your heart, so I will not demand that you believe everything immediately."

She placed his hand over her heart.

"I will prove it to you through my actions. One day, you will stop wondering whether I am going to leave."

Mo Shian felt her heart beating beneath his palm.

"What if that day takes a long time?"

"Then I will keep proving it for a long time."

"What if it takes the rest of our lives?"

"Then I will spend the rest of our lives doing it."

Mo Shian could no longer restrain himself.

He pulled her into his arms and held her tightly, burying his face in her hair.

Weiwei felt something warm touch her neck.

She did not know whether it was a tear, and she did not expose him.

They remained like that for a long time.

There were no dramatic declarations and no witnesses. Only a husband who had almost lost hope and a wife determined to correct the mistakes of another lifetime.

After a while, Mo Shian finally loosened his hold.

"Does your head still hurt?"

"A little."

"I'll ask Aunt Wu to prepare something for you."

"It's only a hangover. There is no need to make everyone panic."

"I should call Gu Yan."

Weiwei immediately grabbed his arm.

"Don't."

"What if something is wrong?"

"Shian, I got drunk. I am not dying."

"Gu Yan said his medicine could pull someone back from the Yellow River."

"That does not mean you should drag him here every time I sneeze."

Mo Shian appeared unconvinced.

Weiwei narrowed her eyes.

"If you call him, I will tell him that you spent the entire morning interrogating a sick woman."

"You said it was only a hangover."

"It will become a severe illness if you call Gu Yan."

Mo Shian stared at her for a moment before reluctantly putting his phone down.

"Fine. I won't call him."

Weiwei smiled victoriously.

"Good."

"But you must eat breakfast and rest."

"I will."

"And drink plenty of water."

"I will."

"No working in the studio until your headache disappears."

Weiwei's smile faded.

"Mo Shian."

"That is not negotiable."

He got out of bed before she could protest and went to prepare warm water for her.

Weiwei watched his retreating back and shook her head.

Her husband had become confident enough to give orders again.

Perhaps that was a good sign.

Mo Shian returned with a glass of warm water and handed it to her.

As she drank, he suddenly asked, "Is my birthday truly the password to your phone?"

Weiwei nearly choked.

She slowly lowered the glass.

"You said you weren't going to mention anything else from last night."

"I never made that promise."

"Mo Shian!"

A rare, brilliant smile appeared on his face.

Weiwei stared at him, then deliberately turned away.

However, the corners of her lips rose despite her embarrassment.

The doubts between them had not disappeared completely, but for the first time, they had spoken about them openly.

That was enough for today.
