Chapter 109

The stone shelf was a battlefield of shattered rock and scattered light. Ethan's blade met Veylan's wind blades in a storm of compressed air, each impact sending shockwaves across the broken ground. Austin's flames clashed against the rust-haired demon's black fire, the two elements hissing and spitting where they touched. Kaya moved through the chaos, her lightning strikes forcing Veylan to divide his attention, to retreat, to bleed.

But something had shifted.

Scarlett's spear lowered. Her eyes, which had been fixed on the path where Lucas had disappeared, grew distant. Her hand pressed against her chest—where the silver thread had cut through her contract. The pain was fading, but the emptiness remained. The connection to the beast was gone.

She felt it. The world pressing against her existence. The seal below was reforming. The Demonic Mana Beast was being bound again. And with its binding, the reason for her presence in this world was ending.

"We're out of time," she said.

Veylan disengaged from Ethan with a burst of wind, landing beside her. His chest heaved, his arms bleeding where Kaya's lightning had found its mark. The rust-haired demon stumbled back from Austin, his flames guttering, his wound open and bleeding.

Scarlett raised her hand.

The battle stopped.

Not from exhaustion, though all of them were spent. Not from mercy, though none had offered it. The three demons simply stepped back. Their weapons lowered. Their stances relaxed. The violence that had filled the mountain air dissipated like mist before the morning sun.

Ethan held his blade ready, his eyes narrowed. "What are you doing?"

Scarlett did not answer, She was already fading.

Her form grew translucent at the edges, the color leaching from her skin, her hair, her eyes. The light of this world was rejecting her. The contract that had bound her was broken, and without it, she could not stay.

Veylan was fading too, his blue hair losing its vibrancy, his features softening into something less than solid. The rust-haired demon—the one who belonged to this realm, who had been born in the spaces between worlds—did not fade. A portal opened behind him, a tear of darkness rimmed with red light. He stepped toward it without looking back.

Austin took a step forward, Emberclaw raised. "They're getting away."

Ethan's hand shot out, catching his arm. "Let them."

"But—"

"Look at them."

Austin looked. Scarlett was already half-gone, her form a ghost of itself, her red eyes the only thing still solid. She was not running, but She was being taken. The world was pulling her back to her world because she couldn't go back to the prison dimension anymore because the contract was destroyed.

The rust-haired demon paused at the edge of his portal. He looked at Austin, at the wound he had given, at the fire that had burned him. His face was unreadable, but something flickered. Then he stepped through, and the portal closed behind him with a sound like a sigh.

Veylan was gone. Scarlett's form flickered, nearly gone, a whisper of red in the gray morning light.

Then she vanished.

The three Black Ops agents stood in silence, watching the empty space where their enemies had been. The wind carried only dust and the distant echo of battle.

Ethan lowered his blade. "It's over."

Austin's fire wings dissolved into embers.

Kaya said nothing. She looked toward the path where Lucas had gone, her white eyes searching for something she could not see.

Below, in the darkness of the seal chamber, Lucas sat with his back against the stone, Ashely's head resting on his shoulder. Her breathing was slow, but still steady.

Then he heard her voice.

I am the most talented person in my whole family. Said to take over my father.

Lucas's eyes opened. The voice was not in the chamber. It was inside him, echoing from somewhere deeper than sound, somewhere the silver light of his soul pulsed in answer.

The time in this world and ours is completely different. I may see you in some minutes after our battle, but for you, it will have been long.

He did not move. Ashely slept against him, unaware. Above, his team would be standing on the stone shelf, wondering what had happened, wondering if he had succeeded.

I left something for you. So that when you break free from this lower world to a higher world, you will land in ours.

He felt it then. A warmth in his chest, buried deep in the silver light of his soul. A thread of red and silver, pulsing with a rhythm that was not his own. Knowledge bloomed at the edge of his consciousness—techniques, understanding, a map to a realm beyond anything he had ever known.

It's already inside your soul. And some soul techniques. Take this as a sign of good will from me.

Scarlett's voice was fading now, the words growing distant, as if she were speaking from very far away.

You fought well. You did what I thought impossible.

Lucas looked down at Ashely's sleeping face, at the rise and fall of her chest, at the faint glow of the seal that would hold for another generation.

Let's see how far you can go. Or can you even break through this world.

The voice was gone. The warmth in his chest settled into something quiet, something waiting. The runes pulsed, And somewhere, where time moved differently, a demon princess with red hair and waited to see what he would become.

Lucas smiled. It was a small thing, barely more than a curve of his lips, but it was real.

"See you soon," he said.

The words echoed softly in the darkness, unheard by anyone but the sleeping queen and the fading light of the seal. Above, his team would be waiting. The sun would be rising. The world would go on.

But for now, in the quiet beneath the mountain, Lucas let himself rest.
