Su Lingyan woke to warmth.
For a few confused seconds, she stayed still, half-dreaming, her mind floating somewhere between sleep and reality. The first thing she noticed was the weight around her waist—firm, steady, unmistakably human. An arm rested there, possessive without pressure, as if it had always belonged.
Her breath caught.
She turned her head slowly.
Kai was asleep behind her, close enough that she could feel the slow rhythm of his breathing against her back. His expression was calm, unguarded in a way she wasn't used to seeing on anyone. No tension in his jaw. No restlessness. Just… stillness.
That annoyed her more than it should have.
She shifted carefully, easing out of his arm, sitting up on the edge of the bed. The sheets slid down, cool against her skin. Sunlight streamed in through the tall windows, illuminating the mess they'd left behind—discarded clothes, tangled fabric, evidence of a night she hadn't planned but couldn't regret.
Her phone vibrated.
Once.
Twice.
She glanced at the screen.
The time hit her like a slap.
"…Shit."
She was on her feet instantly, grabbing her phone, fingers flying as she skimmed notifications. Missed calls. Messages. Calendar alerts stacked on top of each other like a silent accusation.
Behind her, the mattress shifted.
"Running already?" Kai's voice came, low and rough with sleep, far too calm for the situation.
She spun toward him. "Do you have any idea what time it is?"
He propped himself up on one elbow, eyes open now, watching her with mild curiosity. "Early."
She scoffed, tying her robe with sharp movements. "I'm late."
"You run a corporation," he said. "Not a train schedule."
She shot him a look. "The world doesn't pause just because I didn't sleep alone."
That earned a faint smile.
Her phone buzzed again. This time, she froze.
Her expression changed—not panic, not fear, but irritation edged with something sharper.
Kai noticed immediately. "Problem?"
She hesitated, then turned the screen toward him.
A headline stared back at them.
HENGDA GROUP CEO SEEN LEAVING CASINO WITH MYSTERY MAN — EARLY MORNING SCOOP
Below it, a grainy photo. Her. Him. Blurry, but clear enough.
Her jaw tightened. "Xu Zhenyu."
Kai didn't ask who. He already knew.
"He's fast," she continued, exhaling slowly. "Leaks before sunrise. He wants me distracted."
Kai swung his legs off the bed, already reaching for his jacket. "Looks like it worked."
She watched him closely as he moved.
No rush. No tension. No sign that he cared about the headline, the cameras, or the potential fallout.
"You're… oddly calm," she said.
"I don't get nervous about things that can be solved."
She studied him for a moment longer than necessary. People changed under pressure. Voices sharpened. Movements became frantic.
Kai didn't shift at all.
For the first time that morning, something flickered behind her eyes.
"Drive me," she said suddenly.
He glanced up. "Was that a request?"
"No," she replied, already grabbing her bag. "A decision."
They moved through the apartment together, the earlier intimacy replaced by urgency. In the elevator, she leaned back against the wall, heel tapping impatiently against the floor.
"You always like this in the mornings?" she asked.
"Only when I know where I'm going."
The doors opened.
The underground parking garage was quiet—until they stepped into it.
The Bugatti waited beneath the lights, black carbon fiber absorbing the glow around it like it didn't belong to the same world. Even half-asleep, even irritated, Su Lingyan slowed.
She exhaled through her nose. "Every time I see that thing, it irritates me."
Kai opened the passenger door. "Why?"
"Because," she said, sliding inside, "money isn't enough to buy it."
He shut the door gently and walked around to the driver's side.
As they pulled onto the road, something subtle began to happen.
Traffic thinned—not dramatically, but enough to notice. Cars shifted lanes without hesitation. Lights turned green just as they approached, one after another, like the city was clearing its throat and stepping aside.
Su noticed.
She leaned back, watching the road. "Either you're absurdly lucky… or the city likes you."
Kai didn't answer.
A faint notification flickered in his vision.
[Role Concluded Successfully] [Performance Rating: S] [Hidden Compatibility Detected]
No explanation.
No urgency.
He dismissed it without a thought.
"Where's your office?" he asked.
She gave the address.
When the building came into view, Kai finally understood the scale of her mornings.
The tower rose into the sky like a blade of glass, her company's name etched across its face. Media vans crowded the entrance. Security lines doubled. People were already gathering.
Su Lingyan sighed. "Welcome to my reality."
Kai slowed the car slightly. "Want me to take the long way in?"
She turned to him. "You're not worried about being seen?"
He glanced at the mirrors, then back to the road. "Worried people make mistakes."
She laughed softly, despite herself.
Before getting out, she hesitated. Reached over. Straightened his collar with a practiced touch.
"Today's going to be hell," she said quietly. "Last night… wasn't."
He met her gaze. "Call if it gets worse."
She nodded once, then stepped out into flashing cameras and noise, spine straight, expression flawless.
Kai watched her disappear into the building.
Then he drove away.
