Chapter 73 - 73

A few weeks later, another opportunity arrived.

Akshata received an invitation to attend a casting call in London for an upcoming fashion campaign. If selected, it would lead to an appearance during the next Fashion Week season.

Her father accompanied her on the trip.

For both of them, it was an unfamiliar world. Unlike television auditions, fashion castings moved quickly and placed great importance on first impressions, professionalism, and how well a model matched a brand's creative vision.

The casting venue was filled with aspiring models from different countries. Some had years of experience walking international runways, while others were attending their very first casting.

The registration process was simple.

Each model checked in, confirmed her details, and submitted her portfolio—a collection of professional photographs that demonstrated different looks, expressions, and styles. Some also presented a short résumé listing previous campaigns or runway experience.

One by one, the candidates were called inside.

The casting panel consisted of the brand's casting director, creative team, stylists, and representatives from the fashion house.

The first step was a brief introduction.

Each model stated her name, nationality, age, and agency, if she was represented by one.

Next came the runway walk.

The room was quiet as each candidate walked in a straight line toward the panel, turned confidently at the end of the runway, and walked back. The judges observed posture, balance, confidence, rhythm, and how naturally each model carried the garments.

After the walk, the panel asked several candidates to perform a second walk with different pacing or direction. They wanted to see how well each person adapted to instructions.

Some models were then photographed again under the casting lights.

These simple digital photographs—often called "digitals" or "polaroids" in the fashion industry—were taken with minimal makeup and plain clothing so the team could evaluate each model's natural features without heavy styling.

A few candidates were asked to change into sample garments provided by the brand.

The judges carefully checked the overall fit, proportions, movement of the fabric, and how comfortably the model presented the clothing.

Throughout the day, the panel compared dozens of applicants.

The selection was not simply about beauty.

They considered professionalism, punctuality, confidence, attitude, adaptability, and whether the model matched the identity the brand wanted to present in its upcoming collection.

By the evening, the final decisions had been made.

Akshata's name was among those selected.

She had been chosen to represent a respected British clothing brand—a label known within the fashion industry for discovering promising new faces and giving many young models their first major international opportunity.

As she read the confirmation, she smiled quietly.

The casting had lasted only a few minutes.

The preparation behind those few minutes had taken years.

Being selected at the casting was only the final step.

The real preparation had begun almost two years earlier.

High-fashion brands often look for young models who can adapt to different creative concepts while maintaining professionalism under intense schedules. The competition was fierce, with hundreds of aspiring models working toward only a handful of opportunities.

Akshata knew that natural talent alone would never be enough.

For nearly two years, she worked patiently to make herself ready.

She learned runway techniques until every turn and every step became second nature.

She trained to maintain good posture, balance, and stamina for long rehearsal days.

She built a professional portfolio, attended local shoots, learned to pose naturally before the camera, and became comfortable taking direction from photographers and stylists.

She also understood that presentation was more than appearance.

Punctuality, discipline, confidence, communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure mattered just as much.

There were days when nothing happened.

Weeks passed without a single casting.

Sometimes she travelled only to hear, "Thank you, we'll let you know."

Most of the time, no reply came at all.

Instead of becoming discouraged, she treated every audition as practice.

With every rejection, she became a little more prepared for the next opportunity.

When the invitation to London finally arrived, she was no longer simply hoping for a chance.

She was ready for it.

Standing outside the casting room, she took a deep breath.

Two years of quiet preparation had led to this moment.

A few minutes inside the room would decide whether those years had been enough.

When her name appeared on the selected list later that evening, it wasn't luck that had brought her there.

It was the result of countless unseen hours of preparation, discipline, and perseverance.

As Nagraju looked at his daughter, he smiled to himself.

People would remember the announcement.

Very few would ever know the two years of work that made that announcement possible.

Ten days passed quickly.

The excitement of the casting had settled, and now the real event had arrived.

Fashion Week was about to begin.

It was decided that Bhaghy would accompany Akshata on the trip. Nagraju stayed back to manage work, knowing his daughter would be in the safest hands.

Over the past two years, the relationship between mother and daughter had quietly transformed.

Bhaghy was still her mother.

But somewhere along the journey, she had also become her closest friend.

They travelled together, attended fittings, rehearsals, and brand meetings side by side. Every new experience became a memory they shared.

As Akshata began attending more castings and campaign shoots, Bhaghy naturally became part of that world.

She learned the schedules, understood the backstage routines, and even picked up the fashion vocabulary that had once sounded completely unfamiliar.

The two of them often spent their free evenings exploring boutiques and local stores.

Sometimes they shopped because they needed something for an event.

Sometimes they shopped simply because they enjoyed discovering new styles together.

Bhaghy, who had once dressed only for comfort and practicality, slowly began experimenting with fashion herself.

She wasn't trying to imitate anyone.

She was simply discovering what suited her own personality.

She chose elegant jackets, well-tailored dresses, scarves, and simple accessories that reflected her taste.

For the first time in years, she dressed not because she had to, but because she enjoyed expressing herself.

Akshata would often tease her.

"Maa... that looks better on you than it would on me."

Bhaghy laughed.

"And who is teaching whom now?"

They both burst into laughter.

To the people around them, they looked like sisters enjoying a holiday together.

Only they knew that behind those smiles were years of trust, encouragement, and countless conversations that had slowly transformed their relationship.

They had started the journey as mother and daughter.

Somewhere along the way...

they had become each other's closest companions.
