Chapter 51 - The Slayer

Drawing her sword, Rayna tells the people nearest her to leave as she approaches them.

Noticing the disturbance as people fled the place, Sage nudges Finn, "I think we have company." Her eyes widen as she spots the iconic sword, "The Slayer!"

Finn turns as the unknown woman walks up to them and says, "Lucky me, all my prey in one spot."

Feeling the tension, Davina acts first, throwing her hand up in an attempt to grab her with magic.

"How did you find us?" Sage inquired, attempting to buy time for Davina to perform her magic, believing she was progressing towards a goal since her actions did not reveal anything obvious.

Rayna smirks, "I've been a hunter longer than you can imagine. Did you really think you could hide from me?"

"It's not working, it's like she isn't even there," Davina whispered, trying a couple more times to no avail.

Eyes locked with Davina, Rayna made a move, speeding over in a blur, thrusting the sword towards her chest.

Inches from her face, the sword halted as Finn caught it by the blade. Davina's eyes widened in fright, having just realized what had happened. Instinctively, she unleashed a blast of magic, pushing everything around her away, including Sage, who lacked the immunity of Rayna and Finn as they stood unharmed while the game machines around them were demolished and sent flying.

Reyna's eyebrow quirked up at seeing him also unaffected.

"Going after a child first." Finn sneered, striking at her with his free hand.

Ducking the blow, Rayna kicks him back, pulling her sword free from his grip, cutting his hand.

As she turned her attention back to Davina, Finn was there in a flash, ready to defend.

"Careful of her sword, it's magical," warned Davina as Sage rejoined them and quickly apologized to the redhead.

"Get her out of here," said Finn as Rayna resumed the attack. Slicing this way and that as Finn did his best to dodge, looking for an opportunity to counter.

"Come on, we'll only get in the way," said Sage, pulling Davina away.

Sidestepping another swing, Rayna slices a pinball machine in half as Finn seizes his chance, kicking her across the room, smashing into the air hockey table.

Picking up one of the machines, he tosses it in after her, which she evades, rushing back.

When she's near enough, sword thrusting out, he tears out the seat of the driving game next to him and swats the blade away with a follow-up blow to her face.

Head whipping back, she catches the next one with her left hand and holds firm, glaring at him.

Testing her one-handed strength against his two, he smirks, hitting her in the face again.

Angered, she pushes aside the next attack, stepping past his guard to land a shallow cut into his exposed side as he pivots around, slamming the chair down towards her, breaking both it and the flooring as he narrowly misses her.

When she quickly comes around for another go, he changes tactics, backpedaling as he lulls her into a false sense of control, leading the pacing as he dances around the game room, doing his best to dodge and counter while avoiding her sword.

Evading a swift slice, she hits him with a follow-up kick as he narrowly misses catching her leg.

Seeing this, she prioritized the sword, weaving it into faster and deadlier moves, slowly building up smaller cuts on him as she continued to nick him every now and again.

Feeling the timing, he baited her into another overextension after becoming accustomed to her moves.

Unable to resist the opening he provided, she went for the kill, but to her surprise, in a burst of speed she wasn't ready for, he quickly steps inside her guard, catching her sword arm with one hand, and her neck with the other, choke slamming her into the ground.

When the light finally left her eyes, he tore out her neck, for good measure.

Glancing at the sword, he looks down at his wounds that have yet to heal and decides against touching it without knowing anything more about it.

Giving her sword one last look, he went to find Davina, so she could come back and check it out.

Halfway to the door, he stopped upon hearing the sound of burning flames, and quickly turned to find the slayer charging at him in the buff.

Caught by surprise, she skewered him through the heart and grinned, "Time to die."

He frowned. To think there were other types of immortals like them, even harder to kill, no less, and here he was hoping Sage was wrong about that.

Grabbing her sword arm, he felt a weird sucking force. The red, round-cut gemstone in the hilt of the sword, veins lit up and began to swirl.

"If it's any consolation, you'll be my first Original," said Rayna smugly.

Scowling at the all too familiar taste of death, he could tell this time would be different if he didn't stop it.

With his strength fading, he couldn't force the blade out fast enough as he closed his eyes and focused on that feeling, recalling the previous times he fought it off.

Rayna's grin slowly vanished as the swirling in the blade slowed, stopped, and yet he still stood.

Eyes snapping open, he kicked her off him, jumping back to free himself from the blade.

Clutching his chest, he grimaced as the wound didn't close all the way.

They silently sized each other up, unsure how to proceed.

Playing it off, he straightened his posture. "Seeing how neither of us can die, perhaps we should call it a day and go our separate ways."

She spun the sword in her grip. "I don't know, you don't look so hot, maybe I just need to, Try Again!" she yelled and lunged.

Sighing, Finn leaned his body to the side, evading the first strike, ducked the second, lifted a leg over the third, and hit her with a straight fist shot to the face for the fourth, breaking her nose.

Wiping it with the back of her hand, she grinned and came at him again.

Avoiding her reckless swings, he pulled an arcade game down from the side, forcing her to retreat a step as he then shoved it into her with his foot, causing her to fall onto the tall boxed machine.

A swift kick to her exposed head and her neck broke, nearly tearing off as he ended her for a second time.

Picking up another arcade game, he smashed it on top of her corpse and stepped back to see what would happen.

It wasn't long before he saw a glow from the hilt of the sword as her body burst into flames, consuming everything around her until she was all that remained in the place she fell, fully healed and ready for more.

Having fallen for a second time in such a short period, she gave him a respectful look, deciding to put away her reckless behavior.

She grinned, "Ready for round three?"

Finn's eyes glanced at the sword, "Sure, one last round."

"Aw, don't give up yet, I'm just getting started!" she yelled, rushing him. Excited to have a real challenge after so long.

.

Outside, Davina stopped running.

Sage looked back and asked, "What is it? Why'd you stop?"

"We can't just leave him," said Davina, looking back at the gaming center.

"He'll be fine," said Sage, though the worry was apparent on her face.

"You don't know that. We have no idea what that sword does. I could feel the magic emanating off it," said Davina seriously.

"You're right, I don't, but what would you have us do? He'll be weakened if anything happens to either of us, hell worse if it happens to both of us, and like you said, we don't know what that sword does," argued Sage.

"Then we take it and keep it from her," Davina proposed hotly.

"We? Last I checked, your magic was useless," Sage rebuked harshly.

Davina threw her hands up in frustration. "Ugh, I know, alright, but maybe I could... I don't know... empower you," she said, looking towards her as an idea began to form.

Sage perked up at the suggestion, "Could you?"

"I don't know, I've never tried before, but I remember reading something recently that could work, if you're up for it?" said Davina.

Hearing the fighting going on inside, Sage gave a determined nod, "Do it."

All of a sudden, the front doors blew out as the slayer flew through them, followed by Finn.

"What are you two still doing here?" asked Finn as he quickly launched himself at Rayna to keep her from breaking away and attacking them.

"What the hell? Why's she naked?" asked a bewildered Davina.

"We want to help," said Sage, not as easily disturbed as her younger companion.

"Help?" asked Finn as if still finding the idea foreign to him.

Rayna scoffed, "There is no help, it's only a matter of time before I kill you all!"

"Davina! Get ready to trap her," said Finn.

"Trap her, how? She's immune to magic, not to mention too fast to track like this," said Davina, watching their blurred forms.

Sage rolled her eyes, saying, "Why not empower yourself, or at least your eyes, to keep pace with them, and create chains or something to bind her?"

"Right, I knew that," Davina huffed, feeling annoyed she didn't think of it.

"Uh, huh," Sage hummed bemusedly.

"Nothing will trap me for long," Rayna growled, swiping her sword at his head, which he evaded as she quickly transitioned into a pommel hit to the face, breaking his nose.

Catching the spinning back kick, he attempted to break her ankle, only for her to spin out and kick him with the other foot.

When next they engaged, he threw his right hand towards her face, blinding her with his blood, ducking a wild swing as he rotated into a low sweeping kick, taking out her legs.

"Now, Davina!" yelled Finn.

Chains erupted from the ground, trapping her body as Finn ran towards them.

"We need to go now," said Finn seriously.

"What? Why don't we finish her? Or at least take the sword," said Davina.

"Already tried that, doesn't work, and I believe she wasn't lying when she said we couldn't trap her for long," said Finn, leading them away.
