Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: Before the Road Divides

Chapter 43: Before the Road Divides

Mistforge slept beneath a blanket of fresh snow.

The celebrations had finally faded.

The market stalls were empty.

The academy had fallen silent.

Only the occasional lantern burned along the streets, casting warm circles of light across the frozen roads.

Inside the Yun residence, everything was peaceful.

Yun Che had been carried home less like a victorious young cultivator and more like a particularly expensive vase that everyone was terrified of dropping.

His father had carried him.

His brother had carried the armor.

His mother had carried enough medicine to stock a small clinic.

The moment he arrived home, he had been fed several unpleasant-tasting pills before being firmly ordered into bed.

The physician's final instructions had been simple.

"He sleeps."

"And no one wakes him."

The medicine was so strong that Yun Che had fallen asleep before he could even complain.

Outside...

A shadow moved across the rooftops.

Silent.

Almost invisible.

It landed lightly upon the balcony.

Not a single tile shifted.

Not a single board creaked.

Tianyu stood there, his white cloak fluttering gently in the cold wind.

Even without transforming, the Heavenly Frost Wolf bloodline gave him extraordinary balance and silence.

Normally...

He never bothered moving like this.

He was fast enough that stealth rarely mattered.

Tonight...

He wanted to avoid disturbing anyone.

Unfortunately for him...

Two people had already noticed.

Inside another room...

Yun Mie slowly looked toward the balcony.

Her senses had caught the faintest ripple of Ki.

She smiled softly.

"Tianyu."

Beside her, Echo lazily lifted his head before resting it back down again.

The spirit beast wasn't concerned.

He knew the visitor.

Yun Mie quietly closed the window she had been looking through.

She made no effort to stop him.

Perhaps...

This was the last conversation those two boys would have for many years.

Or...

Perhaps forever.

Life was unpredictable.

She knew that better than most.

When she had been younger, she had promised several friends they would meet again after leaving for different sects, kingdoms, and expeditions.

Some had died.

Some had settled elsewhere.

Some had simply...

Never returned.

Promises were easy.

Distance was not.

She silently prayed these two boys would prove her wrong.

Tianyu gently slid open the balcony door.

The room was quiet.

Moonlight spilled across the floorboards.

Yun Che lay beneath a thick blanket, completely motionless.

His right hand rested inside a cast suspended carefully above the bed.

Bandages peeked out from beneath his sleeping clothes.

His breathing was deep and steady.

"He really was beaten up..."

Tianyu whispered.

For a moment...

He simply looked around.

He had visited this room countless times over the years.

The cluttered workbench.

Half-finished inventions.

Metal scraps scattered across shelves.

Sketches pinned to the walls.

Books stacked in impossible towers.

A broken gear sitting beside a teacup for reasons only Yun Che probably understood.

It was exactly the room he expected.

Messy.

Practical.

Entirely Yun Che.

A small smile appeared.

"I'm going to miss this place."

He raised one hand.

A tiny swirl of Frost Ki danced across his fingertips.

Moments later...

Soft snowflakes drifted gently downward.

One landed on Yun Che's nose.

Another on his forehead.

A third disappeared into his hair.

Yun Che frowned in his sleep.

"...Brother..."

Tianyu blinked.

"...Brother?"

Yun Che rubbed his face.

"...Five more minutes..."

Then his eyes slowly opened.

He stared blankly toward the ceiling.

Then...

Toward the balcony.

"...No."

He blinked again.

"...Tianyu?"

"What are you doing here?"

Tianyu leaned casually against the window.

"Hmm."

"I wanted to talk."

"I'm leaving in the morning."

The words hung in the room.

Yun Che sat up a little too quickly.

His ribs immediately reminded him that this had been a terrible idea.

"...Ow..."

Tianyu laughed.

"Still fragile?"

"Shut up."

"So soon?"

"The sect is over a month's journey from here."

"I have to leave early."

"I see..."

The room became quiet.

Yun Che hadn't expected the farewell to arrive this quickly.

Some childish part of him had imagined there would always be another day.

Another spar.

Another argument.

Another ridiculous invention for Tianyu to criticize.

Instead...

Morning would come.

And Tianyu would leave.

In his previous life...

Distance had never truly felt like distance.

There had been phones.

Messages.

Video calls.

Trains.

Planes.

If you missed someone...

You could usually speak with them within minutes.

This world was different.

Months of travel separated cities.

Years separated sect disciples.

There was no convenient way to keep friendships alive.

Teleportation arrays existed.

Powerful sects used them.

Great kingdoms possessed them.

People like Yun Che...

Could barely imagine paying the cost.

The thought left an unfamiliar ache inside his chest.

This...

Was the first goodbye he had experienced in this world.

Tianyu understood the feeling surprisingly well.

Unlike Yun Che, he had travelled.

His father had taken him throughout the kingdom.

He had visited neighboring territories.

He had even seen the sect where he would soon train.

Yet...

Those had always been temporary journeys.

This one was different.

This time...

He wasn't leaving for weeks.

He was leaving for years.

He walked closer to the bed.

Then asked quietly,

"Yun Che..."

"Won't you come with me?"

The question struck harder than any blow during their duel.

For one brief moment...

Yun Che almost answered without thinking.

Yes.

It would have been wonderful.

Training together.

Travelling together.

Growing stronger together.

Like ordinary teenagers chasing impossible dreams.

His smile slowly faded.

"...I can't."

Tianyu waited.

No explanation came.

Only silence.

Yun Che looked toward the moon outside the window.

If only it were that simple...

He wasn't afraid of hardship.

He wasn't afraid of training.

He wasn't even afraid of powerful enemies.

He was afraid of something else entirely.

Mind-reading.

Soul-searching.

Memory techniques.

A careless inspection by the wrong elder could expose everything.

His previous world.

His family from another life.

Knowledge that did not belong here.

If that knowledge reached powerful cultivators...

How many worlds could become endangered?

He couldn't take that risk.

Not yet.

Perhaps...

One day...

When he was strong enough to protect those memories himself.

But not today.

Tianyu frowned.

For the first time...

Yun Che's refusal didn't make sense.

Normally...

His friend always had a logical reason.

Always.

This answer...

Felt different.

He studied Yun Che carefully.

Then asked a question he had never considered before.

"...Is there something there..."

"...that would endanger you?"

Yun Che's fingers tightened around the blanket.

"..."

"Enemies of the Yun Clan?"

Still...

Silence.

The answer hovered on Yun Che's lips.

He wanted to tell him.

More than once, he had nearly revealed the truth over the years.

Every time...

He stopped himself.

Not because he didn't trust Tianyu.

Because he did.

Trusting him meant refusing to burden him with a secret that could one day cost him everything.

Finally...

Yun Che spoke.

"I'll tell you..."

"...when we meet again."

He looked directly into Tianyu's eyes.

"Maybe..."

"By then..."

"I'll be ready."

Tianyu looked at him for a long time.

For the first time since they had met...

He looked genuinely hurt.

"You trust me enough to fight beside you."

"You trust me enough to protect your back."

"But not enough to tell me this?"

Yun Che's expression softened.

"I trust you."

"Then why?"

"Because I don't want to endanger you."

The answer came without hesitation.

"If you don't know..."

"No one can force it out of you."

The room became quiet again.

Tianyu slowly looked away.

He didn't fully understand.

It didn't make logical sense.

Yun Che wasn't someone who hid things without reason.

Which only meant...

The reason had to be serious.

Very serious.

He asked one final question.

"...Are there enemies of the Yun Clan inside the sect?"

Yun Che almost laughed.

If only it were that simple.

"No."

"Then..."

He stopped himself.

Some questions didn't need answers.

Not tonight.

Eventually Tianyu sighed.

"You'll regret this."

Yun Che smiled.

"Oh?"

"When we meet again..."

"I'll be terrifying."

"My father's level?"

"He says the elders of the sect are around there."

"I'll learn from people far stronger than him."

Yun Che nodded.

"I know."

"You still think you'll beat me?"

"I do."

Tianyu folded his arms.

"...How?"

"You'll have the sect."

Yun Che's smile widened.

"I'll have the world."

The answer caught Tianyu completely off guard.

Then he laughed.

A genuine laugh.

"I'd like to see that happen again."

He pointed toward Yun Che.

"But understand something."

"When we meet again..."

"The game starts over."

"You won't be fighting the same Tianyu."

Yun Che nodded.

"Good."

"Because you won't be fighting the same Yun Che either."

Tianyu reached beneath his cloak.

He removed a small silver bracelet engraved with delicate spatial runes.

Without ceremony, he placed it beside the bed.

"I wanted to give you this before I left."

Yun Che stared.

"...A storage bracelet?"

"You carry enough equipment to supply a small army."

"You need it more than I do."

Yun Che picked it up carefully with his uninjured hand.

Even without activating it, he could feel the intricate craftsmanship.

This wasn't merely expensive.

It was something many Foundation Establishment cultivators would spend years saving to purchase.

"I..."

"I can't accept something this valuable."

"You can."

"I don't have anything even close to giving you."

Tianyu shrugged.

"I didn't bring it to trade."

"I brought it because you're my friend."

Yun Che smiled quietly.

Friend.

The word carried more weight than any treasure.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

Then...

Using a thread of telekinetic force, he opened a small compartment hidden beneath his bedside table.

Something slid across the wood.

A compact black metal object stopped beside Tianyu.

The young lord picked it up curiously.

"...What's this?"

"A pistol."

Tianyu turned it over several times.

"It doesn't look very impressive."

Yun Che chuckled.

"Neither did I."

That earned another laugh.

Tianyu carefully tucked the strange weapon into his robe.

"I'll keep it."

"Good."

"So when you look at it..."

"You'll remember that somewhere..."

"...your rival is probably making something even more troublesome."

The two boys looked at one another.

Neither mentioned promises.

Neither swore eternal friendship.

Neither claimed they would certainly meet again.

Life had already taught them enough to know such vows meant little against time and distance.

Instead...

Tianyu stepped onto the balcony.

"Until next time."

Yun Che nodded.

"Until next time."

Snow drifted gently between them.

Then Tianyu disappeared into the night without another sound.

 -----------------------------------

Morning arrived quietly over Mistforge.

A pale sun struggled to break through the blanket of winter clouds, casting a soft golden light across rooftops dusted with fresh snow. Thin streams of smoke rose from chimneys throughout the city as people prepared breakfast, while merchants slowly opened their shops for another day.

Yet the eastern gate was already crowded.

Word had spread quickly.

Today...

The Young Lord of Mistforge would leave for the Heavenly Flame Sect.

Outside the massive city gates stood a small but disciplined procession.

Captain Han adjusted the straps on his traveling armor before giving one final inspection to the soldiers accompanying him.

There were no elaborate banners.

No musicians.

No extravagant display.

This was not a parade.

It was an escort.

The road to the sect stretched across mountains, forests, rivers, and territories where powerful spirit beasts still roamed. Even though the route was considered relatively safe, a month's journey demanded caution.

Nearby, Bingya stood proudly.

The great Frost Wolf had been groomed before dawn until his white fur shimmered beneath the morning light.

The crystal growths upon his body sparkled like carved ice.

His traveling packs had already been secured to specially designed harnesses fitted comfortably across his broad back.

Tianyu rested one hand upon his lifelong companion's neck.

Both looked ready.

Both looked determined.

The Shen family stood together.

Lady Meiying had been calm all morning.

Or at least...

She had tried very hard to appear calm.

Now that departure had truly arrived, all that composure disappeared.

She adjusted Tianyu's cloak.

Then she adjusted it again.

Then she brushed imaginary dust from his shoulder.

Then she straightened his collar.

"Tianyu..."

"You already fixed that."

"I know."

She fixed it one more time anyway.

"You'll remember to eat properly?"

"I will."

"And sleep?"

"I'll try."

"And don't skip your medicine after training."

"I won't."

"And if you're injured—"

"I'll visit the physician."

"And don't fight just because someone provokes you."

"I'll try."

Lady Meiying narrowed her eyes.

"'I'll try'?"

Tianyu immediately corrected himself.

"...I won't."

She finally smiled.

"There."

"That's better."

Then she quietly embraced him.

Not as the Young Lord of Mistforge.

Not as an outstanding cultivator.

Simply...

As her son.

"Take care of yourself."

Her voice trembled despite every effort to keep it steady.

"No victory is worth throwing your life away."

Tianyu hugged her gently.

"I know, Mother."

"I'll come back."

A much smaller figure suddenly wrapped herself around one of his legs.

Shen Lian looked as though she intended never to let go.

"You have to write!"

"I will."

"Not one letter!"

"I know."

"Lots of letters!"

"I know."

"I want to hear everything!"

"The food."

"The teachers."

"The disciples."

"The fights."

"The spirit beasts."

"Everything!"

Tianyu chuckled.

"I'll write."

She sniffed loudly.

"And I'll visit every month!"

Captain Han coughed awkwardly.

Lord Shen closed his eyes for a brief moment.

Tianyu knelt so that he was level with his little sister.

"Lian."

"The sect has rules."

"I know..."

"They only allow a few family visits each year."

Her shoulders immediately drooped.

"...That's unfair."

"It is."

"But they're trying to help everyone focus on training."

She looked unconvinced.

"I still don't like it."

"I know."

She threw her arms around him one last time.

"...Come back quickly."

"I will."

Lord Shen had watched quietly throughout the farewell.

He never interrupted.

He understood better than anyone why his wife and daughter behaved this way.

Most sects were not schools.

They were lifelong commitments.

Students often remained there for decades.

The Heavenly Flame Sect was no exception.

Until disciples reached the Spirit Transformation Realm...

Leaving the sect without permission was strictly forbidden.

They could travel only when assigned official missions.

Nothing more.

The rules were applied equally to everyone.

Whether prince.

Merchant's son.

Or the Young Lord of Mistforge.

Anyone who ignored those rules faced severe punishment.

Family visits were similarly restricted.

Too much contact with home distracted disciples from cultivation.

Harsh.

Yet effective.

Lord Shen himself had once lived beneath similar rules.

When the farewells finally ended...

He stepped forward.

Father and son stood face to face.

No emotion appeared on Lord Shen's expression.

But Tianyu knew him well enough to notice the faint warmth hidden beneath that calm exterior.

"You understand what awaits you?"

"I do."

"Inside the sect, you are not the Young Lord of Mistforge. You are Tianyu, a new disciple among thousands."

Lord Shen's gaze hardened.

"In this city, people step aside because they know your family. At the sect, no one will make room for you. Some disciples will possess stronger bloodlines, older inheritances and better teachers. Do not complain about what they were given."

He placed a hand on Tianyu's shoulder.

"Give them a reason to remember what you accomplish."

The cold morning wind swept across the open road.

For a long moment...

Neither spoke.

Then Lord Shen placed one hand upon his son's shoulder.

A simple gesture.

One he rarely made.

"When you return..."

"I expect you to return stronger."

"My ambition has never changed."

Tianyu smiled.

"To protect Mistforge."

"And this kingdom."

Lord Shen nodded.

"One day..."

"I will no longer be able to shoulder that burden alone."

"The kingdom will need another Spirit Transformation cultivator."

"I hope..."

His usually unwavering voice softened just enough to reveal the father beneath the City Lord.

"...that person will be you."

Tianyu's chest tightened.

"I won't disappoint you."

"I know."

Bingya stepped forward.

The great Frost Wolf lowered himself.

Tianyu climbed onto his back with practiced ease.

Captain Han mounted his own beast.

The escort formed up immediately behind them.

The soldiers checked their weapons one final time.

Everything was ready.

Captain Han looked toward Lord Shen.

"My Lord."

"We depart."

Lord Shen gave a single nod.

"Safe travels."

The city gates slowly opened.

The heavy wooden doors groaned as morning light poured through the widening gap.

Beyond them stretched a road disappearing into distant snow-covered mountains.

A road that led far beyond Mistforge.

Far beyond everything Tianyu had ever known.

Bingya took the first step.

Then another.

Within moments, the great wolf broke into a gallop.

The escort followed close behind.

Snow scattered beneath powerful paws.

Cold wind rushed past Tianyu's face.

He looked back one final time.

His mother still waved despite tears in her eyes.

Lian was waving with both arms so enthusiastically that one of the attendants had to stop her from running after the procession.

Lord Shen stood exactly where he had been.

Straight-backed.

Proud.

Watching until his son disappeared beyond the gate.

Around them, the citizens of Mistforge lined the streets.

No one had been ordered to come.

They had simply come because they wanted to.

The blacksmiths removed their hats.

Merchants bowed respectfully.

Children shouted his name.

Hunters raised their spears.

Guards saluted.

"Safe journey, Young Lord!"

"Come back stronger!"

"We'll be waiting!"

The cheers echoed through the valley as the procession grew smaller and smaller against the white landscape.

Tianyu raised one hand in farewell without turning Bingya around.

Mistforge slowly vanished behind the falling snow.

Ahead lay the Heavenly Flame Sect.

Ahead lay years of hardship.

Years of growth.

Years that would shape the boy into the man he would one day become.

And though neither Tianyu nor the people watching from the gates could know it...

Many years would pass before the Young Lord of Mistforge rode through those gates again.
