Chapter 65 - Chapter 64: A Strange Symbol

The chamber fell into stunned silence. Lady Maya's final words still echoed like a thunderclap. Even the air itself seemed to hesitate — caught between awe and disbelief.

Everyone stared at her — the Grandmaster who had just wagered her throne. Even Katherine and Vince, who moments ago smirked with arrogance, stood frozen. For several heartbeats, no one dared to breathe.

Then Katherine's lips twisted into a cruel grin. "Well then… so be it," she sneered, voice laced with venom. "I also accept it."

Gasps rippled through the chamber once more. The reality of what had just unfolded struck like lightning.

Sakura slammed her palms on the table. "This is madness! Both of you—stop this now!"

Edward stepped forward, his usually calm face twisted in disbelief. "Lady Maya, Katherine—have you both lost your minds!? Do you even realize what's at stake?"

He then turned toward Master Kunochi. "Master Kunochi, please say something to them."

Lily's voice trembled. "Yes, Master Kunochi, please… stop them from doing this. You can't just watch this!"

All eyes turned to the oldest man in the room. Master Kunochi sat still, his weathered eyes half-closed, as if gazing far beyond the moment. When he finally spoke, his voice carried the weight of centuries.

"Once a vow leaves the tongue, it no longer belongs to the mortal who spoke it — but to the winds that carry it to fate."

The entire room quieted again.

"Just as an arrow released from the bow cannot return to its string," he continued, "words once spoken cannot return to their lips. These two have chosen their path. The heavens themselves will now decide which of them stands… and which of them falls."

No one could argue. No one dared. Even Sakura — fiery and unyielding — fell silent, her fists trembling in frustration. And there, in that heavy stillness, the future of Silver Heaven Academy began to shift.

Lady Maya closed her eyes for a moment, drawing in a steady breath. When they reopened, a faint, knowing smile curved her lips — not of arrogance, but of quiet confidence. Her gaze turned toward Shaun, burning with faith. This is your path now… prove them wrong.

Across from her, Katherine's smirk deepened — sharp, poisonous, triumphant. Her eyes gleamed with the cruel joy of someone already convinced of victory. Enjoy your hope while it lasts, Lady Maya. That boy's failure will be your downfall. The chamber remained silent, but the war between two wills had already begun.

After the tension faded, Lady Maya turned her attention toward the three standing at the centre. Her tone, though calmer, still carried the authority of one whose word shaped destinies.

"So, Nina's confession proves that Shaun is not to blame for what happened," she began.

"Nina entered the Mist Forest of her own will, and Shaun followed to ensure her safety. Noa, in turn, followed to protect them both."

She paused, eyes gliding over each of them with measured judgment.

"Therefore, they are not responsible for endangering Princess Nina's life. Nina may have violated the academy's rules—but by choosing honesty over fear, she has set an example of justice. She stood up to protect an innocent from facing injustice."

Maya folded her hands before continuing, her voice soft but firm.

"For that courage, I—Maya Flamefox, Grandmaster of Silver Heaven Academy—have decided that Princess Nina Heavenstar shall not face expulsion. She will leave here unscathed... for now, at least."

Relief flickered in Nina's eyes, but before she could exhale, Maya's voice grew cold again.

"However…" She leaned slightly forward.

"I cannot overlook the fact that all three of you entered the forbidden Mist Forest without informing any authority. Whatever your intentions were, such recklessness could have cost you your lives — and this academy would have borne that burden."

Her tone deepened with weight.

"Every disciple here is the academy's responsibility. Therefore, to ensure that neither you nor anyone else repeats this mistake again, I am assigning you all disciplinary duty."

Shaun, Nina, and Noa straightened.

"As punishment," Maya declared, "you three will assist the librarian for two weeks — cleaning, organizing, and arranging the library archives. You will report there daily after classes."

The three nodded in unison, "Yes, Lady Maya."

From the corner, Vince clenched his fists in silent disgust. The thought of Nina — his fiancée — doing what he considered a "lowly task" made his jaw twitch. Yet, under Maya's gaze, he dared not speak a word.

"Alright then," Katherine said with a dismissive wave, her lips curling in disdain.

"We've had enough drama for one day. Princess Nina, Vince — let's go. You both have classes to attend."

Nina hesitated, her eyes lingering on Shaun, filled with worry and guilt. Vince and Katherine's gazes, however, were sharp and disdainful as they turned away.

"Instructor Lily, Noa — you two may leave as well," Maya said. "Your next class is about to begin."

Both bowed respectfully, "Yes, Lady Grandmaster."

They exited the chamber. Shaun followed behind — until Maya's calm yet commanding voice stopped him mid-step, "Wait, Shaun."

He turned, startled.

"There's something I wish to ask you…" Her words lingered like a veil of mist — heavy, unreadable, and full of hidden meaning.

Shaun swallowed, suddenly feeling the weight of her gaze. Something told him… this next question wouldn't be about punishment.

As Nina, Vince, Katherine, Noa, and Lily exited the chamber, silence lingered — a heavy, calculating silence.

Lady Maya finally leaned back in her chair, her sharp gaze settling on Shaun.

"Now that they're gone," she said calmly, "we can speak more freely."

Her tone softened slightly, but her eyes — dark and piercing — held the weight of command.

"Shaun, as Nina said, you and Noa were the ones who confronted that masked assassin."

She folded her arms on the table, "When we clash with someone, we learn more from the exchange of blows than a hundred words could ever reveal. So tell me… what did you learn?"

Shaun hesitated for a moment before replying, "I'm sorry, Lady Maya… but I couldn't learn much that might reveal her identity. Still, there were a few things I noticed — I don't know if they're useful."

Before Maya could respond, a calm voice interjected.

"Any detail can hold value when the trail runs cold," said President Akshay. He adjusted his glasses slightly, eyes gleaming with quiet interest, "Even the smallest clue can open a door others might overlook. Speak, Shaun."

Encouraged by his words, Shaun nodded, "Alright. The one who attacked us was a woman — I'm sure of it. She used snow magic, but not the ordinary kind. The precision and intensity of her spells were… terrifying."

He took a breath, trying to recall every fragment of that battle, "She was fast, focused, and well-trained. Her strikes were disciplined — like someone who's fought and killed before. She also had a strange ability: she could create a spear of pure frost that froze anything it touched. Even the air felt like it was dying when that spear appeared."

He paused, his brows knitting, "And… I think she was the one who created that crystal deer. Maybe to lure Princess Nina into the forest."

"Assassination Art… and Elemental Weaver Art," Kurumi murmured under her breath.

Her sister Kiara turned toward her, eyes narrowing, "Are you sure?"

Kurumi nodded faintly but didn't elaborate. Lady Maya caught the exchange — but chose not to press it. Instead, she turned her gaze back to Shaun.

"Shaun," she said quietly, "do you have any idea who she might have been? Or why she came after you three?"

Shaun shook his head, "No, Lady Maya. But… from how she moved, I think she was after Princess Nina. She attacked her like it was personal — as if she was ordered to make sure Nina didn't leave that forest alive."

A chilling stillness settled over the chamber. No one spoke. The faint sound of the wind brushing against the window filled the silence — cold and distant.

Finally, Maya exhaled, "…I see."

Her expression softened, but her thoughts were unreadable — deep as an unlit ocean.

"Alright then, Shaun. You may return to your class. Instructor Lily's lecture should be starting soon."

Shaun hesitated. A part of him wanted to stay — to learn what Maya and the others truly suspected. But something in her eyes told him this conversation was far from over.

"Yes, Lady Maya," he said, bowing politely before turning toward the door.

Shaun was just about to step out of the chamber when a sudden thought struck him. He froze mid-stride, eyes widening.

"Lady Maya!" he blurted, spinning back toward her, "There's… there's something I forgot to tell you!"

Maya raised an eyebrow, caught off guard by his urgency, "What is it, Shaun?"

Breathing quickly, Shaun stepped closer.

"During our fight with that assassin — one of my attacks hit her back. It tore a piece of her cloak, and I saw something on it… a strange symbol."

Maya's calm demeanour sharpened, "A symbol? What kind of symbol?"

Without hesitation, Shaun reached for a feather quill and a sheet of parchment from her desk. He dipped the quill into ink and began sketching rapidly, his brow furrowed in concentration. Everyone watched in silence. Even Akshay leaned forward, curiosity gleaming behind his glasses.

If Shaun truly remembered something physical, it could be the first real clue they had. Minutes passed as the scratching of quill on paper filled the chamber. Then, with a small gasp, Shaun finished.

"There! Lady Maya — this was the symbol I saw on her back!"

He turned the parchment toward her. The moment Maya's eyes fell on it, her expression froze.

A faint shimmer of dread rippled through the room as Maya's hands trembled. Drops of sweat formed along her temple, and the confident composure of the Grandmaster fractured — if only for a second.

"This symbol…" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"But… how is that possible?" Her pupils shrank, crimson flickering for an instant in her dark eyes.
