Mara's first impulse was to fight the current.
Kael noticed it from the way the captain turned the helm and increased the mana feed almost the same instant the hull began to tilt.
The propulsion system answered with a low roar, the inscriptions along the sides of the vessel lit up, and for one second it looked as though they might escape the force forming beneath them.
Then the entire ship groaned.
Not from impact, but from the strain of two different directions trying to decide where it should go.
Daren shouted from the other ship.
"Turn it off!"
Mara looked at him.
"Are you insane?"
"If you fight the approach, you'll split the hull!"
That got her attention.
Mara cut the propulsion.
The change was immediate.
The vibration disappeared and the vessel stabilized, although it continued descending with the water.
Kael gripped the edge of the hull while watching the ocean around them transform into something his experience told him simply should not happen.
