The car had been driving for several minutes.
Mia gazed silently out the window.
Fran didn't try to force her to speak.
He knew that sometimes, certain wounds needed silence before they could be shared.
After a long while, the car left the bustling city streets for a quieter road.
Mia looked around.
"Where are we going?"
Fran smiled.
"You'll see."
A few minutes later, the car came to a stop.
Mia stepped out.
She stood there, completely breathless.
Before her stretched a massive lake.
The moon reflected off its surface, turning the water into a shimmering sheet of silver.
The breeze gently rippled the small waves.
Everything was quiet.
"Wow…"
Mia took a few steps forward.
"Fran… this is gorgeous."
Fran smiled, happy to see her face finally light up.
"I'm glad you like it."
Mia turned around.
"How do you even know about this place?"
"Let's just say I know a lot of spots where people come when they need to think."
"Do you come here often?"
"Not really."
He popped the trunk of the car.
Mia watched as he pulled out a large blanket, a basket, and several bags.
She burst out laughing.
"Wait… you had all of this ready?"
"Maybe."
"You planned a picnic?"
"A dinner."
He spread the blanket out on the grass.
Then he carefully set out the plates, silverware, and glasses.
He placed two small candles in the middle before lighting them.
Mia watched him with a look of wonder.
"You're incredible."
"I know."
"Such modesty."
Fran laughed.
"Have a seat."
Mia settled onto the blanket.
Fran opened the basket.
"So, on the menu…"
He pulled out several dishes.
"Fresh salad, toasted bread, herb-roasted chicken, some sautéed vegetables…"
Mia looked at the dishes with shining eyes.
"You made all of this?"
"Part of it."
"Part of it?"
"Hey, I do have my limits."
Mia burst into laughter.
They began to eat.
The food was simple, but delicious.
The stillness of the lake, the candlelight, and the gentle night air made the moment feel almost surreal.
Fran then poured a little wine into their glasses.
Mia took a small sip.
"This is really good."
"I picked it out specially for tonight."
"You really thought of everything."
"I wanted you to forget about your evening."
Mia lowered her eyes slightly.
"It's working."
Fran smiled.
