Chapter 4: Whispers in the Dark
The deeper they ventured into the Scar, the darker it became. The faint light from the rift energy in the distance painted the jagged terrain with shifting shadows. Kael trudged behind Lira, his muscles aching and his mind swirling with unease. Every few steps, he could feel it—that pulsing, cold presence of the Nexus within him, like a predator watching its prey.
He clenched his fists, forcing his focus back on the path ahead. The Scar wasn't forgiving, and losing focus here could cost him his life.
"You're quiet," Lira said, glancing back at him. Her voice was calm, but there was a trace of suspicion in her tone.
"Not much to talk about," Kael muttered, his eyes scanning the surrounding landscape.
"Really? You don't have any questions about what just happened back there?" she pressed.
Kael stiffened but didn't respond. He didn't want to admit that he had no idea how he'd redirected that bolt of rift energy. Or that he was terrified of what the Nexus inside him might want.
"Suit yourself," Lira said with a shrug. "But let me give you some advice: if you don't learn how to control whatever that was, it'll get you killed. Or worse."
Kael narrowed his eyes at her. "Worse?"
Lira stopped walking and turned to face him fully. Her expression was hard, her gaze piercing. "This world doesn't forgive weakness, Kael. If you can't control your power, someone else will. And trust me, you don't want to be on the wrong side of that equation."
For a moment, they stared at each other, the weight of her words settling over them. Kael didn't flinch, but he could feel the Nexus stirring again, almost as if it were reacting to her presence.
"I'll figure it out," he said finally.
"You'd better," Lira replied. Then she turned and continued down the path without another word.

As they pressed deeper into the Scar, Kael found his thoughts drifting back to his time as a Rift Servant.
He remembered the Syndicate overseers, their faces twisted with cruel delight as they herded him and the other servants into the rifts. They'd promised them freedom, food, and safety—if they survived. But survival was rare.
Kael had seen children younger than him torn apart by Riftspawn. He'd seen grown men lose their minds in the chaotic energy of the rifts. And through it all, the Syndicates had watched from a safe distance, counting their profits while the servants bled for them.
The memory burned in Kael's chest, fueling his hatred for the Tower and everything it had brought into the world.
"Stop," Lira said suddenly, snapping Kael out of his thoughts.
He froze, his hand instinctively going to his knife. "What is it?"
Lira didn't answer right away. She was staring at a faint shimmer in the air ahead of them, her body tense.
"A distortion," she said quietly. "The rift's getting unstable."
Kael squinted, trying to see what she was talking about. At first, it looked like nothing more than a faint ripple in the air. But as he focused, he realized it was moving—growing larger, its edges flickering with an eerie light.
"What do we do?" he asked.
"Stay back," Lira said, pulling a small device from her pack. It looked like a cross between a compass and a clock, its needle spinning wildly as she held it up to the distortion.
"This area's about to collapse," she muttered. "We need to move—now."
Kael didn't argue. They turned and started running, the ground shaking beneath their feet as the distortion expanded. The air grew colder, and Kael could feel the Nexus inside him reacting, its presence growing stronger with each step.
"Lira!" he shouted as the ground split open in front of them.
She skidded to a stop, her eyes darting to the fissure that now blocked their path. "Damn it!"
The distortion behind them was closing in fast, its edges crackling with energy that sent chills down Kael's spine.
"We're out of time!" Lira snapped, her voice sharp.
Kael's mind raced. The Nexus was practically screaming at him now, its whispers louder and more insistent than ever.
Use me.
Kael gritted his teeth. He didn't trust the Nexus, but he didn't have a choice.
"Stay close to me," he said, his voice low.
"What are you—" Lira started, but Kael didn't wait for her to finish.
He reached out with his mind, focusing on the cold, dark presence within him. The Nexus responded instantly, its energy surging through his body like an icy flood.
The world around him seemed to slow, the distortion's energy warping and twisting as Kael manipulated the space around them. The fissure in front of them rippled, its edges folding inward as Kael willed the distance between them to shrink.
"Go!" he shouted, his voice strained.
Lira didn't hesitate. She leapt across the collapsing gap, landing on the other side just as Kael released his hold on the Nexus's power.
The distortion behind them exploded, sending a shockwave of energy through the Scar. Kael stumbled, his knees buckling as the Nexus's energy receded, leaving him gasping for breath.
Lira grabbed his arm, pulling him to his feet.
"That was... new," she said, her tone unreadable.
Kael didn't reply. His head was pounding, and his vision swam. The Nexus's whispers had faded, but he could still feel its cold presence lingering, waiting.
Lira studied him for a moment, her expression unreadable. Then she turned and started walking again.
Kael followed, his mind racing. Whatever the Nexus was, it was more powerful than he'd realized. But with that power came danger—a danger he couldn't afford to ignore.
---
As they continued their journey, Kael couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The Scar was quiet now, but the air was heavy with an unnatural tension.
And somewhere in the shadows, the Nexus stirred, its whispers faint but persistent.
You can't run from me forever, it seemed to say.
Kael clenched his fists, his jaw tightening.
"I'll figure it out," he muttered under his breath.
Lira glanced back at him, her eyes narrowing. "What did you say?"
"Nothing," Kael replied quickly.
But deep down, he knew the truth. The Nexus was a part of him now, and no matter how much he hated it, he couldn't escape it.
And as they ventured deeper into the Scar, Kael couldn't help but wonder: What price will I have to pay for this power?
