The city had transformed.
What had been beautiful in the afternoon was now breathtaking. Thousands of lanterns hung from every surface—strung between buildings, draped over doorways, wrapped around lampposts and window frames and the branches of every tree that lined the streets. Their warm glow painted the cobblestones in shades of amber and gold, turning the entire city into something out of a dream.
The banderitas swayed overhead, their colors deepened by the lantern light. Musicians had set up in the central square, their melodies weaving through the crowd like threads of silver and gold. The air smelled of roasting meat and sweet pastries and the faint, clean scent of night-blooming flowers.
And the people. There were so many people.
