Kriel's Awakening: Chapter 2
Kriel hunkered down in the shadows of the crumbling storage cellar, the cold creeping into his bones like ice water but honestly, he barely felt it anymore. Six exhausting months had flowed by since his Awakening, and during that time, the villagers had twisted against him, misunderstanding the darkness that was growing inside. If only they knew that this hellish life was about to give birth to something really powerful within him.
The kids called him the "cursed boy," their mockery trailing after him like annoying shadows as he slinked through the streets. He could hear their whispers, feel the weight of their cold stares. "Stay away from that one," their moms warned, hustling their kids past him as if he were some feral beast. Just a few days ago, a group of kids had trapped him near the fountain.
"Look! It's the Markless," sneered a guy named Finn, his Astral Mark blazing a horrifying bright blue. "What's wrong, Kriel? No powers to show?" Kriel kept his head down, fists clenched and ready for anything. "Just leave me the hell alone, Finn."
"Oh, we definitely will!" Finn smirked, his laugh echoing in Kriel's ears long after they were gone. But, he wasn't just wallowing in misery; he was using this time to train and sharpen his abilities in secret, even if nobody noticed. The void inside him throbbed steadily as he practiced under the cover of darkness.

He shuddered at the thought of winter. It had been a brutal one. Kriel spent the majority of his nights hiding in this damp cellar, where rats scuttled about. He learned to catch them, a lousy excuse for dinner, but hey, better than starving.
Even with the cold gripping him, he spent hours investigating his transformation. While everyone else was sleeping, he'd press his palm against his invisible mark, feeling the void inside him throb like a wild heartbeat. Jet-black shadows flickered at the edges of his vision, but he still had no clue how to control them.
---
Then, one freezing night, everything turned upside-down. He curled up in the corner with a moldy piece of bread when he heard voices getting closer.
"Is that him?" a whisper floated through the dark. Kriel didn't dare inhale.
Come out you fucking loser it's playtime a voice shouted early playful
Kriel was dragged by the Veil born kids out into the icy snow
"Yeah, let's have some fun!" another voice shouted back. It was Finn, but this time he had some older kids with him.
Kriel's heart raced as they pulled him out into the frigid snow. Finn shoved him down, the chill of his laughter sending shivers down Kriel's spine. "Check this out," he bragged, channeling a small fireball into his hands.
"Let's see if the Markless can handle a little heat!" Kriel winced, panic bubbling inside him. "Please, don't!" But his plead fell on deaf ears. Finn hurled the fireball, and Kriel felt its scorching heat barreling at him. In that instant, his body reacted without his permission, and a surge of energy coursed through him.

He gasped and squirmed in the snow, left there to rot like some piece of trash. But he wasn't dead. He could see his own blood staining the pristine white snow, dark and vivid. His breaths slowed, and something within him finally clicked.

Kriel sat up slowly, his heart racing. "What does this mean?" he whispered to himself, the bitter cold biting into his skin. He had stumbled upon something unusual a flicker of hope in this darkening world.
As the next year crawled by, Kriel established a routine. During the day, he'd observe the Veilborn kids training from the shadows, mimicking their moves in his cellar by night. Each day, their laughter and barbs fed his determination.
---
"I'll show them all," he muttered fiercely, feeling each shadowy movement grow smoother.

While he trained, the villagers thought they were breaking him, but he knew the truth. Every punch, every cruel word, only made him tougher. He wasn't just surviving; he was transforming.
Then, on one particular day, something shifted.
A fat rat dashed across his puny stash, eyeing the scraps with hunger. "You little thief," Kriel hissed, hands vibrating with energy. He lunged, and suddenly, his palm pulsed with void energy as he struck.

That very night, Kriel caught his reflection in a shard of broken glass. He gasped. His once dull eyes were now swirling with tiny purple specks. "What's happening to me?" he muttered in awe.
The bullying never went away, but they stayed clueless to the changes stirring within him. "They don't realize," he whispered to the shadows. "They think they can crush me." When Finn and his crew confronted him again, Kriel felt a striking difference within himself. As they laughed, he tightened his fists, a fierce thought igniting inside him. "What if I could just show them?"
"Hey, Kriel!" Finn called, grinning like a fool. "Ready for round two of fun?" Kriel held his gaze, a fire igniting deep inside him. "You'll see soon enough, Finn," he replied, his voice steady and shaded with menace.

With a daring grin, Kriel began to romanticize the idea of revenge.

Revenge? Yeah, it was best served in the dark, and he smirked at that thought, shadows swirling eagerly around him.
