At least Denny and Melanie had mercy on us. Our rain boots were still there, lined up neatly by the decking like good little soldiers. Everything else? Gone. Swept away by whatever chaos they'd decided we deserved today.
"Boots and nothing else," I muttered, picking mine up. The rubber was cold against my bare skin.
Connor stared at them like they'd personally betrayed him. "Walk of shame it is," he said.
"Exactly," I said, and took his hand. "Come on. Game plan time."
We slipped the boots on. The sound of the buckles clicking was the only thing between us and complete disaster. Once they were on, we stood there in the yard, two grown men, bare, and tried to look like we had a strategy.
"Okay," Connor said. "Option one. We cut through the bushes. Straight line to the cabin. In and out."
I squinted at the hedge line. It was thick. Wet. Full of things that would definitely end up in places I did not want things to end up.
