Chapter 198 - Haruto’s Observatory Job Offer

The notification arrived quietly.

Too quietly.

Haruto almost ignored it.

He sat at his desk, surrounded by scattered papers and open books, his mind drifting between unfinished calculations and lingering fatigue. His phone buzzed once, then fell silent.

Absentmindedly, he reached for it.

Then froze.

The subject line read:

"Observatory Research Position – Final Decision"

His heartbeat slowed.

Then quickened.

For a moment, he didn't open it.

He just stared.

This was it.

Everything he had worked toward—every late night, every doubt, every sacrifice—had led to this single moment.

He inhaled deeply.

And tapped the screen.

The words unfolded before him.

Clear.

Definite.

Unmistakable.

He had been accepted.

The room felt suddenly too small.

Haruto pushed his chair back, standing up abruptly as if he needed space to process it. His hands trembled slightly, the weight of it settling into his chest.

"I… got it," he whispered.

But saying it aloud didn't make it feel more real.

If anything, it made it overwhelming.

Without thinking, he grabbed his coat and rushed out.

The city blurred around him.

He didn't remember the streets he crossed or the people he passed. His thoughts raced ahead, all pointing toward one place.

Aiko's studio.

When he reached it, he didn't knock.

He pushed the door open.

"Aiko—"

She looked up from her canvas, startled.

"Haruto?"

He stood there, breath uneven.

"I got it."

She blinked.

"Got what?"

"The observatory position."

Silence.

Then—

Her eyes widened.

"You're serious?"

He nodded.

"I got it."

The moment hung for a fraction of a second.

Then she moved.

She ran toward him, wrapping her arms around him tightly.

"I knew it," she laughed. "I knew you would!"

Haruto held her just as firmly, his voice quieter now.

"I wasn't sure."

"I was," she said. "You've been chasing this for so long."

He pulled back slightly, looking at her.

"And I wouldn't have made it here without you."

She shook her head.

"No," she said gently. "You walked this path. I just… stayed beside you."

He smiled.

"That's exactly why I made it."

Their eyes met.

And in that moment, everything felt aligned.

Later that evening, they stood outside the studio.

The sky stretched wide above them, scattered with stars.

Haruto looked up instinctively.

"They feel different tonight," he said.

Aiko followed his gaze.

"How?"

"Closer," he replied.

She smiled.

"Maybe they've always been close. You just needed to reach them."

He glanced at her.

"You're getting good at this."

"At what?"

"Explaining the universe in a way I understand."

She laughed softly.

"Maybe I learned from you."

A comfortable silence followed.

Then Aiko spoke again.

"When do you start?"

"Soon," he said. "It's going to be demanding."

She nodded.

"I figured."

There was no hesitation in her voice.

No fear.

Just understanding.

"We'll make it work," she said.

Haruto looked at her carefully.

"You're sure?"

She met his gaze without wavering.

"We've handled distance before," she said. "This time, we're stronger."

He exhaled slowly.

"Yeah," he said. "We are."

She reached for his hand.

He didn't pull away.

The future stood before them—uncertain, demanding, full of challenges neither of them could fully predict.

But it wasn't something to fear anymore.

Because they weren't facing it alone.

That night, beneath the quiet sky, Haruto realized something.

The stars he had spent years chasing…

Were no longer distant.

They were within reach.

And beside him—

Aiko stood, steady as ever.

His constant.

His home.
