The Transfiguration classroom buzzed with the low hum of chatter as students filed in, eager for the lesson. I took my seat with Hermione at the front desk of the room.
Today's task was to transfigure guinea fowls into guinea pigs, and it went about as expected. Seamus, somehow, managed to cause an explosion that sent his guinea fowl flying straight into Parvati's, prompting her to shriek and dart around the room in a panic.
Neville's guinea fowl still had feathers by the end, giving it a bizarre, almost cursed appearance. Only Hermione and I managed to complete the transfiguration perfectly, though I succeeded on my first attempt, a result now expected of me after the display of skill I'd shown during the first task.
As the lecture came to an end, Professor McGonagall stopped by the front of the room and cleared her throat, immediately silencing the class.
"The Yule Ball is approaching, a traditional part of the Triwizard Tournament and an opportunity for us to socialize with our foreign guests," Professor McGonagall announced, her tone as strict as ever.
"Now, the ball will be open only to fourth years and above, although you may invite a younger student if you wish."
Lavender Brown let out a high-pitched giggle, drawing a few glances from nearby students. Parvati Patil nudged her sharply in the ribs, her own face contorted as she tried and failed to suppress a laugh.
Both of them turned to look at me, their giggles barely contained. I gave them a quick glance, before returning my focus to Professor McGonagall.
Her expression didn't waver, and she continued without acknowledging the distraction.
"Dress robes will be worn," Professor McGonagall continued, "and the ball will start at eight o'clock on Christmas Day, finishing at midnight in the Great Hall. Now then…"
Professor McGonagall stared deliberately around the class.
"The Yule Ball is, of course, a chance for us all to—er—let our hair down," she said, though her disapproving tone suggested she personally wouldn't be letting anything down anytime soon.
Lavender's giggles burst out uncontrollably, her hand pressed so hard against her mouth it looked like she might suffocate.
"But that does NOT mean," Professor McGonagall went on, "that we will be relaxing the standards of behavior we expect from Hogwarts students. I will be most seriously displeased if a Gryffindor student embarrasses the school in any way."
The bell rang, and there was the usual scuffle of activity as everyone packed their bags and swung them onto their shoulders.
Professor McGonagall called above the noise, "Potter a word, if you please."
I told Hermione to wait for me by the door, already knowing what the professor wanted to tell me.
"Potter, the champions and their partners are the ones who start the dance and open the ball. So I would suggest you find a partner quickly and polish your dancing skills, or learn them if you don't know them."
"Well I don't know how to dance, so I will have to learn that, but as for the partner, I already know who I am going with."
Professor McGonagall raised an eyebrow at my confident response, though she didn't comment on it.
"That will be all for today. Remember, I expect nothing less than your best behavior at the ball. Don't disappoint me."
I gathered my things and left the room meeting with Hermione and started heading towards our next lecture.
I glanced at Hermione. "So, did you hear what Professor McGonagall and I talked about?"
Hermione raised an eyebrow, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Of course I did. I have ears, don't I?"
I chuckled. "Fair enough. So, you have any guesses about who my Yule Ball partner is?"
Hermione's smile widened as she looked at me, clearly teasing. "I don't know, Harry. Who could it possibly be?"
I gave her a teasing grin, bumping my shoulder into hers. "Come on, Hermione, can't you guess?"
"Well it could be Parvati or Lavender I saw them looking at you frequently as professor talked about the yule ball, or it could be someone else. You have gotten more famous among the females because of your performance in the first task." She said.
I raised an eyebrow, giving her a playful look. "Oh really? So, you think I've caught the eye of Parvati and Lavender, huh?" I said, teasing her back. "What makes you think I'd pick one of them?"
Hermione's smile curled into something more mischievous. "Well, they do seem to be paying more attention to you. But," she paused, her voice lowering slightly, "I'm sure you have someone else in mind."
"Yes, I do have someone in mind. And she is the only person in my mind who I want to go with." I teased her.
"She has been with me from the beginning, and we have been through so much together as well. "
For a more dramatic flourish, I stopped her by holding her hand and kneeled beside her in the hallway.
Her eyes widened in surprise. I looked up at her, my gaze serious yet playful. "Hermione Granger, will you do me the honor of being my date to the Yule Ball?" I asked.
She blinked, a blush creeping up her cheeks, but then she smiled, nodding her head repeatedly. "Yes, of course, it would be my pleasure," she said, her tone warm, and her hand squeezing mine.
She helped me back up, both of us smiling at the moment. She laughed softly, her eyes twinkling with amusement and something else, something warmer.
"So, I guess we should start practicing our dance moves then?" she teased, raising an eyebrow.
I grinned, standing up straight. "Definitely. I wouldn't want to embarrass us in front of the whole school."
We both laughed, the sound echoing in the empty hallway. There was a moment of comfortable silence before Hermione's face softened. "I'm looking forward to it, Harry," she said quietly, her hand still resting in mine.
"Me too," I replied, feeling a warmth spread through me.
With that, we started heading toward our next lecture, casually making plans to practice dancing whenever we found the time.
As we walked to our next class, my mind drifted to the dress robes the original Harry had worn for the Yule Ball.
While it wasn't awful, it definitely wasn't anything special. I figured if I was going to make a lasting impression, I might as well get something better.
I decided I'd order a new set of robes, something that would stand out, without being too flashy. Furthermore, I think Hermione would appreciate it, and maybe I could even surprise her with something unexpected. A little change from the usual could go a long way, especially for this kind of event.
