The path led only to the laundry yard and the kitchen, where the court maids worked, so Sohwa couldn’t help asking why.
“Just exploring,” Hwayeong replied breezily, strolling toward the laundry yard. “If I keep walking the same paths every day, it gets dull. Besides, I should learn the layout of the quarters sooner or later.”

The moment she mentioned “learning the layout,” Sohwa felt a prickle of dread.
When they reached the laundry yard, where freshly washed garments fluttered under the blue sky, Hwayeong let out a low whistle.
“The court maids really have it rough. Do they wash all that every day?”
“They do, Milady.”
“Huh. If I beat the laundry like that, I’d probably feel a lot better when I’m angry.”
Watching the maids rhythmically slap wet fabric against the stones, Hwayeong muttered to herself, and Sohwa nodded in agreement.
