We landed in Rio de Janeiro bright and early in the morning, and the heat hit us even through the windows.
The jet touched down so smoothly I almost didn't feel it, just a soft bump and then the roar of the runway, and when I looked out, the airport we taxied into wasn't like JFK at all. It was smaller, private, luxury, the kind of place that didn't have terminals, just open sky, white hangars and a strip of tarmac that shone in the sun. It was already hot at eight in the morning, the kind of thick, golden heat that made the air shimmer.
