Chapter 113 - The Shape of Us

They had it in a records office on the eighth floor, behind a door that shut, at a table the guild had abandoned four years earlier. Below them the ground line was holding a stair, which is the only reason either of them believed there was time for a conversation.

Yenna took the chair against the wall with the door in front of her. Vell sat where he could watch that door, since a man with one working arm sits where the exit is.

Fourteen days earlier she had written a disclosure rule into her book, in a rented room, with two people reading it back to her. After the Cup final she added a public-contact clause, which requires a same-day conversation before either of them sleeps.

Neither clause covers what he had said to her on the ninth-floor landing an hour before that night. That is why the eighth floor happened at all, since a rule which does not cover the case is a rule waiting to be rewritten.
