Chapter 104 - Grade Six Is Watching

A compressed grade trial is a Directorate phrase that appears twice in the Association's literature and once in a footnote. Both of the entries describe it as a theoretical procedure, and the footnote records that four people have attempted it in recorded practice.

None of the four is described as having come out of it. The footnote gives their licence numbers rather than their names, which is the Association's way of recording something it would prefer not to have on a page.

An ordinary grade threshold takes between nine and forty hours in a controlled room, with a practitioner reading the core throughout. The compressed version does the same work inside a minute, and the panel had put forty-one seconds on the door.

The Cup core reward was in the equipment case on the grain floor.
