Chapter 8 - Descending (8)

Jin Kai woke naturally as warm sunlight bathed his small room once again.

Golden rays streamed through the modest window, painting the wooden walls in soft morning light. He lay still for a moment, taking stock of his body. This time, the difference was noticeable — his condition had improved significantly overnight.

"I must have slept through the entire day yesterday…" he murmured to himself, voice still a little hoarse from disuse.

The heavy exhaustion that had weighed him down was largely gone. His arms and legs felt far more nimble, and the sharp, constant pain had dulled into something much more bearable. The God Kin physique was finally beginning to show its true strength, slowly knitting together the damage from his violent descent.

Jin Kai took a careful breath, then slowly swung his legs over the edge of the bed. He placed his bare feet on the cool wooden floor and pushed himself upright. There was still some stiffness and lingering aches, especially around his ribs, but he could stand much more steadily than before.

He walked over to the window, drawn by the familiar sound of waves. The view outside was almost the same as yesterday — the endless sea sparkling under the rising sun, the stretch of golden sand, and the gentle sway of palm-like trees in the morning breeze.

Then his gaze found her.

Ruo Lan was out on the small wooden boat again, just like the previous morning. She stood gracefully in the shallow water, hauling in a net heavy with fresh fish. Her azure dress was once again damp from sea spray, clinging lightly to her slender figure. Her long black hair was tied back loosely, a few stray strands dancing in the wind as she worked.

Jin Kai stood by the window, watching her quietly. The sunlight behind her created that same soft halo effect, turning the water droplets on her skin into tiny points of light. Despite the physical labor, her movements remained elegant and efficient. There was a quiet determination in the way she pulled the heavy net through the surf and dragged it toward the shore, barefoot on the wet sand.

A faint smile touched Jin Kai's lips as he observed her. After centuries of seeing only stagnant cultivation and emotionless immortals, this simple, hardworking scene felt strangely refreshing — and undeniably captivating.

Ruo Lan looked up toward the cabin as she neared the shore. When she noticed Jin Kai standing at the window, her eyes widened slightly in pleasant surprise. She gave the net one final tug before leaving it near the entrance, then raised a hand in a small wave.

"You're up early today," she called out, her voice carrying lightly on the sea breeze. "How are you feeling this morning? You look much better already."

Jin Kai stepped away from the window and moved toward the door of the cabin, his steps steadier than yesterday. As he opened the door and stepped out into the fresh morning air, he couldn't help but keep his gaze on the young woman standing on the beach.

"Much better, thank you," he replied, his voice clearer and stronger now. "The rest seems to have helped a lot."

Ruo Lan brushed a wet strand of hair away from her face and offered him a warm, relieved smile.

"I'm glad to hear that. Come inside and sit down. Breakfast will be ready soon. You still need to take it easy though — don't push yourself too hard."

Jin Kai shook his head gently, a small but determined smile on his face.

"Let me help you prepare breakfast," he said. "It'll be easier with two pairs of hands. You've been waking up early every day just to catch fish and cook for everyone. The least I can do is help. Even though I'm still injured, I can at least do this much."

"Eh?" Ruo Lan blinked in surprise, her eyes widening slightly. "Are you sure? I still want you to rest. Your hands and arms are still injured…"

"After resting the whole day yesterday, my arms are feeling much better now," Jin Kai replied calmly. "Let me help you. Just tell me what to do."

Ruo Lan paused for a moment, clearly hesitating. She studied his face, then glanced at the bandages still wrapped around his arms. After a brief internal debate, a sweet, soft smile bloomed on her lips.

"Okay then," she said gently. "You can help me wash the dishes and prepare the vegetables. But if you feel any pain, you have to stop immediately. Promise me?"

Jin Kai gave a small nod, the corners of his mouth lifting. "I promise."

The two of them walked back into the cabin together. The morning sunlight filled the simple kitchen-dining area, making the space feel warm and lived-in. Ruo Lan moved with her usual graceful efficiency, while Jin Kai followed at a slightly slower pace.

She handed him a wooden basin with some freshly washed vegetables and a clean cloth.

"You can start by wiping these dry and chopping them into small pieces," she instructed softly. "I'll handle the fish and the porridge."

They worked side by side in comfortable silence at first. Jin Kai carefully wiped the vegetables, his movements still a little stiff but steady. Ruo Lan stood nearby, skillfully scaling and cleaning the morning's catch before placing pieces into the pot.

Occasionally, their arms would brush lightly as they moved around the small counter. Each time it happened, Ruo Lan would glance at him with a hint of shyness, while Jin Kai found himself quietly enjoying the simple, domestic rhythm of the moment.

After a while, Ruo Lan spoke again, her voice gentle and curious.

"You really don't have to push yourself, you know," she said, stealing a quick look at him. "Most people who wash up on this beach need weeks to recover. You're healing surprisingly fast."

Jin Kai smiled faintly as he continued chopping. "I guess I'm just lucky."

He worked in silence for a few moments, the rhythmic sound of the knife against the cutting board filling the small kitchen. Knowing the children would wake up soon, Jin Kai decided to use this rare moment when it was just the two of them.

In a soft, low voice, he spoke without looking up from the vegetables.

"Ruo Lan… I've been wondering. Tonight, after the kids go to bed, would it be possible for us to have a chat? I've been recovering these past few days and haven't had a proper chance to talk to you."

Ruo Lan paused mid-motion, her hands stilling over the pot of porridge. She seemed surprised by the sudden change in topic. For a brief second, her eyes widened, but when she saw the earnest look in Jin Kai's eyes, her expression softened.

"Okay…" she replied quietly, a faint blush coloring her cheeks. "I realized I haven't spoken to you properly either. I'm glad you're feeling better."

She gave him a sweet, gentle smile that made her eyes curve beautifully.

"Let's get through this day together first, and we can talk tonight."

Jin Kai nodded, a small warmth spreading in his chest at her agreement. "Thank you."

Together, they continued preparing breakfast in a comfortable, slightly charged silence. Ruo Lan stirred the porridge while Jin Kai finished chopping the vegetables and arranged them neatly on a plate. Their movements slowly fell into a natural rhythm — passing tools to each other, occasionally brushing hands, and sharing the small space without awkwardness.

Before long, the delicious aroma of fresh fish porridge and lightly seasoned vegetables filled the cabin. Just as they were setting the bowls on the round table, the familiar sound of sleepy footsteps and soft yawns began drifting from the children's room.

Ruo Lan glanced toward the hallway with a fond smile, then turned back to Jin Kai.

"Looks like they're waking up," she said softly. "Thank you for helping me this morning. It was… nice."

Jin Kai met her gaze for a moment, the promise of their conversation later hanging quietly between them.

"The pleasure was mine."
