Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: The Earth Does Not Lie

Chapter 4: The Earth Does Not Lie

The enormous golden screen continued to illuminate the sky long after the final reward had been announced.

Across the shinobi world, countless people stared upward. Some celebrated, some prayed, and others silently wondered whether the power responsible for the God List could truly be called a god.

Before the worldwide discussion could grow even more chaotic, new words appeared.

[The First Ranking—Strongest Villages—has concluded.]

[All rewards have been successfully distributed.]

[The next ranking will begin tomorrow.]

[Until then, the God List and Worldwide Chat will remain closed.]

Hashirama's message appeared immediately.

[Senju Hashirama: Tomorrow? At least tell us what will be ranked next!]

[Uchiha Madara: Stop shouting. It has clearly made its decision.]

[Senju Hashirama: I am not shouting, Madara!]

[Senju Tobirama: Your messages somehow sound loud even when written.]

[Uzumaki Kushina: Wait! I still haven't finished speaking with Naruto!]

[Namikaze Minato: Naruto, we will speak again tomorrow. Until then, take care of yourself.]

Naruto opened his mouth, but before he could answer, the golden characters faded.

The vast screen folded inward.

For a moment, it resembled a second sun collapsing upon itself. Then the last thread of golden light vanished, leaving only the ordinary blue sky behind.

The Worldwide Chat disappeared with it.

Silence descended upon the world.

It lasted only a few seconds.

"ANBU!"

Hiruzen Sarutobi's command rang through the Hokage's office.

Four masked shinobi appeared before his desk.

"Send reconnaissance teams to every region identified by the God List," Hiruzen ordered. "Take sensor-nin, Earth Release users, agricultural experts, and representatives of the Nara and Aburame clans."

"Yes, Hokage-sama."

"I want soil samples, water samples, accurate maps, and confirmation of the transformed area. No civilians are to enter until we know the land is safe."

The ANBU vanished.

Hiruzen turned toward the window. From the Hokage Tower, Konoha appeared unchanged.

Yet according to the God List, forty-five percent of its barren or unproductive territory had been transformed into fertile land.

"Can something truly change so much land in an instant?" Koharu asked.

Danzō's fingers tightened around his cane.

"We will know soon."

Similar orders were being issued throughout the world.

The Raikage dispatched his fastest jōnin into the mountains. Ōnoki sent sensor units and Earth Release specialists to examine the transformed valleys. Mei ordered Ao and several trusted teams to inspect the islands under Kirigakure's control.

Rasa sent Baki and hundreds of Sand shinobi into the desert.

Even the leaders of smaller villages deployed every available scout.

No one was willing to blindly trust the golden screen.

But they were even less willing to ignore it.

Baki stood upon a familiar sand dune, staring at something that should not have existed.

Grass moved gently in the desert wind.

It was not a small patch brought to life through irrigation or an oasis hidden between the dunes. A vast green plain stretched toward the horizon.

Young trees rose from dark soil. Clear water flowed through a newly formed stream, cutting across land that had been dry for generations.

Several Sand shinobi stood behind Baki, too stunned to speak.

One of them finally crouched and pushed his hand into the ground. When he lifted it again, rich black soil clung to his fingers.

"This location was inspected three months ago," the shinobi whispered. "There was nothing here except sand."

"Check for genjutsu again," Baki ordered.

A sensor-nin formed a hand seal and concentrated.

Another shinobi released a pulse of chakra through the earth.

Minutes passed.

"There is no genjutsu."

"No barrier or sealing formula has been detected."

"There isn't any unusual chakra in the soil either."

A medical-nin cautiously tasted a drop of water before conducting several tests.

"The water is safe. It contains no poison and almost no salt."

A blur approached from the east. A Sand jōnin appeared and immediately knelt.

"Baki-sama, the eastern team has confirmed the transformation. The fertile region continues beyond the marked boundary."

"What about the southern team?"

"They reported the same thing. Freshwater springs have appeared in six separate locations. Their preliminary calculations match the God List's declaration."

Baki looked across the impossible green landscape.

"Twenty-five percent?"

"Yes."

A quarter of the barren land controlled by Sunagakure had become fertile overnight.

The God List had accomplished in a few seconds what generations of Wind Country rulers had failed to achieve.

"Place guards around every accessible route," Baki commanded. "No merchant, noble, or civilian is to claim any part of this land."

"What should we tell the Kazekage?"

Baki stared at the clear stream flowing through the former desert.

"Tell him the God List spoke the truth."

The Sunagakure council chamber was filled before sunset.

Rasa sat at the head of the table, with Chiyo, Ebizō, Baki, senior jōnin, administrators, and a representative of the Wind Daimyō seated around him.

Gaara stood silently beside the wall. Temari and Kankurō remained near him.

Maps covered the table.

Regions that had once been marked as useless desert were now coloured green.

Baki finished his report.

"There is no detectable chakra maintaining the transformation. The water is real, the soil is fertile, and every team has confirmed the same phenomenon."

"How fertile?" Chiyo asked.

"More fertile than most farmland near the eastern border. The agricultural officials believe rice, wheat, vegetables, and medicinal herbs can all be cultivated."

The Daimyō's representative leaned forward.

"We must immediately divide the transformed territory among the noble houses. My lord will naturally decide—"

"No."

Rasa's single word silenced the chamber.

The representative frowned. "Kazekage-sama, all territory within the Land of Wind belongs to the Daimyō."

Golden sand slowly rose around Rasa's chair.

"Yesterday, your lord considered this land worthless. He reduced Sunagakure's funding while sending missions to Konoha because it was cheaper. Today, when the desert becomes valuable, he suddenly remembers his ownership?"

"Are you threatening the Daimyō's authority?"

"I am protecting Sunagakure's reward."

The air in the chamber became heavy.

Chiyo tapped one wrinkled finger against the map.

"Arguing over ownership can wait. If this information spreads before we secure the territory, nobles and merchants will rush toward it. Foreign spies will follow."

Ebizō nodded.

"Other nations may also attempt to seize pieces of it. A quarter of our barren territory has become suitable for settlements and agriculture. That is enough to change the balance of the entire Land of Wind."

One of the agricultural officials swallowed.

"With proper irrigation and development, the new land could support hundreds of thousands of people."

Temari's eyes widened.

Kankurō stared at the map. "Hundreds of thousands?"

"Eventually," the official clarified. "But even within the next few years, Sunagakure's dependence on imported food could fall considerably."

Rasa's expression remained controlled, but his thoughts were already racing.

Food imports consumed a large portion of the village's resources. Water shortages limited expansion. The Daimyō's reduced funding had pushed Sunagakure toward desperation.

That desperation had influenced decisions which could soon plunge the village into war.

But if Sunagakure could grow its own food, establish new towns, and control new freshwater sources...

The village's future had changed.

"Secure every transformed region," Rasa commanded. "Begin mapping the water sources. No land will be sold until this council establishes laws governing it."

The Daimyō's representative stood angrily.

"I will report this insolence."

"Do so."

Rasa did not even look at him.

When the man departed, Baki lowered his voice.

"Kazekage-sama, what about our existing plans?"

Everyone who understood his meaning became silent.

Rasa's eyes moved toward Gaara.

"The operation has already advanced too far to be abandoned carelessly," he answered. "But we will reconsider everything."

Chiyo studied him closely.

"For the first time in many years, Suna has been given a future that does not depend upon taking something from another village."

Rasa looked down at the green-covered map.

That was precisely what disturbed him.

A mysterious power in the sky had done more for Sunagakure in one day than the Wind Daimyō had done in decades.

The reports arriving in Konoha were equally astonishing.

Kakashi placed a sealed container of dark soil on the Hokage's table.

"This sample came from a rocky region where farming was previously impossible," he said. "The agricultural team planted several seeds. Every one of them successfully germinated."

Shikaku Nara stood beside a newly prepared map.

"The transformed regions precisely match the promised forty-five percent."

Hiruzen examined the soil.

"No chakra?"

"None that our sensors could identify," Kakashi replied. "The transformation appears completely natural."

Danzō sat across from him, his single visible eye fixed upon the map.

"Nothing capable of altering this much territory is natural."

Homura adjusted his glasses. "Whether it is natural or not, the land exists."

"And it must be placed under military control," Danzō said.

Koharu nodded. "At least until we understand the consequences."

Hiruzen slowly returned the lid to the container.

"The civilians will require farmland. Several clans have also requested territory for expansion."

"Giving this land to civilians would be wasteful," Danzō argued. "New forests can conceal training facilities, supply depots, weapon stores, and defensive positions."

"They can also produce food," Hiruzen responded.

"Food can be purchased."

Shikaku sighed.

"Not if every nation suddenly begins producing more of it."

Everyone looked toward him.

He pointed to the map.

"This reward will affect more than farming. Food prices will fall. Trade routes will change. Land that previously held no value will become the centre of disputes. Populations may rise, new towns will be built, and nobles will compete for ownership."

"What are you suggesting?" Homura asked.

"That the God List has changed the economy of every ranked village," Shikaku answered. "Sunagakure will be affected most severely. Its greatest weakness has always been its environment. If it can now produce enough food and obtain reliable freshwater, its dependence on outside trade will decrease."

Hiruzen's eyes narrowed.

"And its reasons for resenting Konoha may change."

"Perhaps," Shikaku said. "Or it may use its new wealth to strengthen its military."

Danzō struck the floor lightly with his cane.

"That is why we cannot view these rewards as simple blessings. The God List has distributed strategic resources according to strength. Tomorrow, it may distribute bloodlines, weapons, or techniques."

No one dismissed his warning.

Hiruzen looked through the window at the empty sky.

"What troubles me most is the City of Hope."

Koharu's face tightened.

"An entire fertile continent."

"We do not know its population, military, location, or intentions," Homura added.

Shikaku shook his head.

"Speculating without information will accomplish nothing. For now, we should focus on our own territory."

Danzō's eye hardened.

"Waiting for information is how hidden threats become powerful."

Hiruzen looked directly at him.

"No operation will be conducted against the City of Hope without my permission."

Danzō said nothing more.

But beneath the table, his hand tightened around his cane.

In Kumogakure, the Fourth Raikage listened as Mabui read the final report.

"Forty percent of the previously barren mountain territory has been transformed. New valleys have appeared between several ranges, and the soil is capable of supporting crops."

A folded his arms.

"Can the transformation be copied?"

"No."

"Dispelled?"

"No."

"Was any foreign chakra found?"

"None."

Darui leaned against the wall.

"Something changed mountains and created farmland without leaving chakra behind. That's beyond troublesome."

C adjusted his glasses.

"The new valleys could support more settlements, but they may also create unfamiliar paths through our natural defences."

A slammed one fist onto the table.

"Then fortify them."

Mabui remained calm. "If we devote all transformed territory to military use, we will waste its agricultural potential."

"I did not say to cover it with fortresses. I said to make certain no enemy can use our own reward against us."

Killer B glanced at the map.

"Green in the stone, food of our own. The List gave a gift, but the source is unknown."

A looked at him.

Everyone remained silent for a moment.

Then Darui rubbed the back of his neck. "Even B is being serious. Tomorrow really might be dangerous."

"Prepare records of every clan, bloodline, weapon, and powerful shinobi connected to Kumogakure," A commanded. "We do not know what the next ranking will be."

"And if none of us enter it?" C asked.

A's gaze sharpened.

"Then we discover why."

Ōnoki floated above one of the transformed valleys in the Land of Earth.

Yesterday, it had been filled with broken stone.

Now broad natural terraces covered its sides. Grass grew between newly formed streams, and fertile soil filled the valley floor.

Kurotsuchi landed near him.

"The survey teams confirmed thirty-five percent."

Ōnoki descended with a deep frown.

"Thirty-five percent of stone does not simply decide to become farmland."

"Apparently, nobody informed the God List of that."

"This is not amusing."

"I think it is a little amusing."

Akatsuchi arrived carrying a basket filled with soil samples.

"The specialists said everything is safe, Tsuchikage-sama."

Ōnoki stared toward the distant opening between the mountains.

"These valleys weaken our natural barriers."

Kurotsuchi crossed her arms. "They also let us grow more food."

"And allow armies to move through land that was previously impassable."

Her smile disappeared.

By the time they returned to Iwagakure, Ōnoki had already made his decision.

"No civilian settlement until every new valley has been mapped," he announced before the council. "Construct observation posts and defensive walls first."

One elder hesitated.

"Will that not delay development?"

"I would rather delay a farm than invite an enemy army through our front door."

Kurotsuchi pointed to the soil samples.

"You still believe it could be a trap?"

Ōnoki glanced at the empty sky.

"I believe any being capable of reshaping nations deserves caution. Gifts are often more dangerous than threats because people willingly lower their guard to accept them."

The islands controlled by Kirigakure had changed more gently.

Dead and salt-damaged soil had become rich. Fruit trees flowered in abandoned settlements, while coastal villages reported unusually large schools of fish.

Ao lowered his covered eye after inspecting the land.

"The Byakugan detected nothing."

Mei looked across the field where civilians had already gathered behind the shinobi guards.

"They look happy."

"They should not have entered before the investigation ended," Ao complained.

"They spent years living through the Bloody Mist. Allow them to look at a field."

During the council, the elders immediately began arguing over which clans would receive the new territory.

Mei listened for less than a minute before striking the table.

"The transformed land does not belong to any single clan."

An elder frowned. "The old families possess historical claims to several islands."

"Historical claims to barren soil they abandoned decades ago?"

"The law—"

"Will be revised."

Ao watched her carefully.

Mei's expression hardened.

"We will not survive the Bloody Mist only to begin killing each other over fertile land. Priority will be given to villages damaged during the civil conflict, widows, orphans, and displaced families."

Chōjūrō smiled faintly.

"With enough development, the food shortages could end."

"That is what this reward will accomplish," Mei said. "Not another conflict."

In Amegakure, Konan stood beside Pain as rain struck the tower windows.

"The scouts have returned," she said. "Twenty percent of the damaged land can now support crops. The constant rain no longer floods the transformed soil."

Below them, people were celebrating in the streets.

Several had fallen to their knees, believing Pain had performed another miracle.

"Will you correct them?" Konan asked.

Pain watched a mother lifting her child beneath the rain.

"No."

"They believe their god healed the land."

"It does not matter whom they thank."

Konan turned toward him.

"For the first time in many years, they have hope."

Pain's Rinnegan remained fixed upon the city.

The God List had improved thousands of lives without war, sacrifice, or shared suffering.

That fact disturbed him more than he was willing to admit.

Orochimaru cared little about fertile land.

Inside one of Otogakure's laboratories, Kabuto placed samples of soil, water, roots, and insects upon a metal table.

"There is no seal, no genjutsu, and no unusual chakra," Kabuto explained. "As far as every examination can determine, this soil has always been fertile."

Orochimaru's golden eyes gleamed.

"But we know it was barren yesterday."

"Yes."

A slow smile spread across Orochimaru's face.

"Fascinating."

"You think the God List used a form of Space-Time Ninjutsu?"

"No. It did not replace the land."

He picked up a handful of soil.

"It rewrote its condition."

Kabuto adjusted his glasses.

"If it can rewrite land…"

"It may be able to rewrite the human body just as easily," Orochimaru finished.

His smile widened.

"Bloodlines, talent, age, disease—even death itself. Tomorrow's ranking may be considerably more valuable than the first."

Reports also arrived in Kusagakure, Takigakure, and the other ranked villages.

Although their rewards were smaller, even five percent of transformed land represented farms capable of feeding thousands.

Kusagakure immediately stationed shinobi along its borders, fearing that larger countries might seize the new territory.

Takigakure secured its transformed forests and riverbanks while strengthening the protection around Fū. The God List had already exposed their jinchūriki to the entire world. The village leaders refused to allow the transformed territory to create another weakness.

Throughout the Five Great Nations, messengers rode toward the Daimyōs' courts.

Nobles demanded ownership.

Merchants calculated future profits and losses.

Farmers gathered outside government buildings, hoping to receive a piece of the miraculous soil.

Shinobi commanders drew new defensive maps.

In a single afternoon, land that had been ignored for generations became the most fiercely desired territory in the world.

Within the City of Hope, the reaction was considerably calmer.

Uchiha Ryu entered the throne room carrying a completed report.

Kai sat near an open window, drinking tea as though the appearance of an all-powerful golden list were merely an unexpected performance.

"The continental surveys are complete, Your Majesty," Uchiha Ryu reported. "The reward is genuine. Soil quality and freshwater reserves have improved across every affected province. No harmful influence has been detected."

Kai turned one page of the book resting in his hand.

"Any damage to existing cities or protected regions?"

"None."

"Then give the updated maps to the governors and agricultural departments."

Uchiha Ryu bowed.

"As you command."

"The outside villages?"

""In considerable confusion."

Kai took another sip of tea.

"They will adapt."

That was all.

A fertile continent was an unimaginable miracle to the outside world.

To the ruler of the City of Hope, it was simply another matter for his administrators to handle.

Night descended across the shinobi world.

Yet lights remained burning within every Kage Tower and council chamber.

Border patrols doubled. Jōnin continued examining the transformed regions. Daimyō dispatched demands, while village leaders prepared arguments for the ownership of land that had not possessed any value the previous day.

Most importantly, every hidden village began compiling information.

They gathered records of their strongest shinobi, clans, forbidden techniques, bloodlines, weapons, summons, and historical figures.

No one knew what the God List would rank tomorrow.

No one knew whose secrets it would expose.

And no one knew what rewards it might grant next.

For centuries, nations had fought wars over fertile territory.

The God List had created more of it in a single day than armies had conquered in generations.

The earth did not lie.

The rewards were real.

And tomorrow, the God List would return.
