Chapter 25 - Back to Ordinary Days

The morning light filtered through the curtains of Kaito Tanaka's bedroom, painting the walls in soft golden hues that felt almost too peaceful after everything they had endured. He lay there for a long moment, staring at the ceiling, his body still humming with residual energy from the pact. The battle for salvation— those desperate clashes against heavenly enforcers, the raw power of Seraphina's true form unleashed— felt like a fever dream now. But the faint scar-like mark on his wrist, glowing faintly with crimson and shadow, reminded him it was all too real.

We survived, he thought, a small smile tugging at his lips. She chose me. We chose each other.

A soft rustle from the kitchen pulled him out of his thoughts. Seraphina— still insisting on her human disguise most days— hummed a melody that didn't belong to any earthly song. Kaito slipped on a shirt and padded downstairs, the wooden steps creaking under his feet. The scent of freshly brewed coffee and something sweet, like pancakes, filled the air.

She stood at the stove, her long dark hair tied back loosely, wearing one of his oversized hoodies that somehow looked elegant on her transcendent frame. When she turned, her crimson eyes softened into warm amber, the illusion holding perfectly for now. "Good morning, Kaito. I attempted human breakfast. The internet tutorials were… informative."

Kaito chuckled, stepping behind her to wrap his arms around her waist. She leaned back into him instinctively, the bond between them pulsing with quiet affection. "You didn't have to. But it smells amazing. How are you feeling after… everything?"

Seraphina tilted her head, her voice carrying that ancient echo beneath the casual tone. "The Nine Hells are quiet for the moment. Heaven's remnants have withdrawn to lick their wounds. But peace is always fragile, my love. For today, though, we can pretend to be ordinary high school students again."

They ate together at the small table, knees brushing under it. Seraphina's pancakes were surprisingly good— fluffy with a hint of something otherworldly, like starlight and spice. Between bites, Kaito recounted small details from the final battle, and she shared fragments of her past that she had withheld before: the weight of ruling a realm that both feared and needed her, the loneliness of centuries before finding him.

By the time they left for school, hand in hand, the normalcy felt almost believable. The streets bustled with students chatting about exams, clubs, and weekend plans. No one glanced twice at the couple who had saved two worlds from colliding.

At the school gates, the familiar chaos greeted them. Friends waved, rumors about "that intense transfer period" still lingering from the past incidents. Kaito squeezed Seraphina's hand tighter as they walked the hallways. His senses, enhanced by the pact, picked up everything: the faint buzz of fluorescent lights, distant conversations, and the subtle thrum of supernatural energy that hadn't fully faded.

In homeroom, their teacher announced a few changes. "We have a couple of new students settling in after some… disruptions last term. Please make them feel welcome."

Kaito's attention drifted until a familiar golden-haired figure entered quietly and took a seat near the back. Celestia. Her presence was subdued, the radiant aura dimmed to something almost human. Their eyes met briefly— she offered a small, knowing nod. After the alliance in the final battle, she had chosen to remain on Earth for a while, observing and perhaps atoning in her own way.

Class dragged on with the usual monotony of lectures and notes. But during a group project discussion, Kaito noticed something new. His pencil snapped in his grip without warning, shadows flickering faintly at the edges of his vision. A small surge of pact energy. Seraphina shot him a concerned glance from across the room, her fingers brushing his under the desk when no one was looking. The touch steadied him, warmth flowing through the bond to suppress the leak.

Control it, he told himself. We can't afford slip-ups now.

Lunch brought a rare moment of peace. They found a quiet spot on the rooftop— technically off-limits, but Seraphina's subtle influence made sure no one bothered them. She unpacked bentos she had prepared, and they sat shoulder to shoulder, the city sprawled below like a fragile kingdom.

"You're getting stronger," she murmured, feeding him a piece of tamagoyaki. "The pact is awakening more of your potential. Soon you'll be able to wield shadows consciously."

Kaito leaned in, stealing a quick kiss that tasted of sweetness and eternity. "As long as I have you, I can handle it. No more near-apocalypses for a while, okay?"

She laughed softly, the sound like distant bells. "The multiverse rarely listens to such requests, Kaito. But I will fight for this peace with you."

The afternoon classes passed without major incident, though Kaito's enhanced hearing caught snippets of gossip. Something about a new transfer student excelling in sports and academics. He didn't think much of it until the final bell.

As they gathered their things, Celestia approached them in the hallway, her expression calm but carrying an undercurrent of vigilance. "Kaito. Seraphina. It is… good to see normalcy returning."

Before they could respond fully, another voice joined the conversation. A tall, athletic guy with sharp features and messy dark hair stepped up beside Celestia, carrying a stack of books effortlessly. He had an easy smile that seemed genuine, but something in his posture spoke of disciplined training.

"Hey, Celestia. These your friends?" He extended a hand to Kaito. "Aiden Voss. Just transferred in. Heard there were some interesting clubs here— maybe kendo or something hands-on. Nice to meet you guys."

Kaito shook his hand, noting the firm grip. Seraphina inclined her head politely, her eyes narrowing a fraction. Aiden's gaze lingered on Celestia a moment longer than necessary, a spark of quiet admiration there.

"Nice to meet you too," Kaito replied. "Yeah, things can get pretty active around here. Welcome aboard."

As they parted ways, Kaito felt a faint prickle at the back of his mind. Nothing concrete— just the pact's intuition whispering that not everything was as ordinary as it seemed. Aiden walked with Celestia toward the school gates, chatting animatedly about adjusting to the new environment and asking about her favorite subjects.

Seraphina linked arms with Kaito as they headed home. "He seems… capable. But harmless for now."

"Yeah," Kaito agreed, pushing down the slight unease. "Just another student. We've earned a break."

That evening, back at home, they trained lightly in the backyard under the cover of illusions. Kaito summoned a small tendril of shadow, shaping it clumsily into a protective barrier. Seraphina guided him patiently, her hands over his, the bond flaring with shared power. Sweat beaded on his forehead, but the progress felt real.

Later, as they curled up on the couch watching a mundane human movie, Seraphina rested her head on his shoulder. "These ordinary days… I never imagined I would cherish them so much."

Kaito kissed her forehead. "We'll protect this. Whatever comes next."

But as night fell and the city lights twinkled outside, a faint pulse from his wrist mark stirred. Far away, in realms unseen, wheels were already turning. New players were entering the board— some with blades forged to hunt those like them, others with hearts that could complicate everything.

For now, though, the dawn held. Ordinary days, fragile and beautiful, stretched before them.
