Etienne stared at Jade as though he had misheard him. For a fleeting moment, he convinced himself that Jade might have no idea what an alpha meant. But that thought quickly vanished after seeing Jade's expression.

Etienne's lips slowly parted, disbelief etched on his face. "...glad?" His voice cracked.
Jade made Etienne's gaze without a flicker of emotion. His face remained frighteningly calm, almost detached, as though they were discussing something trivial.
Terrius looked from one to the other, utterly lost. "What are you two talking about?"
Claude was no better off. He had understood only fragments of Jade's explanation. Alpha? Suppressants? They were foreign terms, yet hearing Jade calmly say he would be glad if Claude were the answer left an unpleasant weight pressing against his chest.
