Chapter 3
Kiran's feet pounded against the forest floor as he navigated through the thick underbrush, his heart racing with anticipation and fear. The Qi he had absorbed surged within him, a warm glow of energy that pulsed through his veins, awakening parts of himself that had lain dormant. Each step felt lighter, the weight of despair slowly being replaced by a burgeoning sense of power.
Yet, Kiran knew better than to let his guard down. This world was filled with dangers he had only glimpsed in stories, and he was now a target—weak and vulnerable. As he ventured further into the forest, he remained keenly aware of the surroundings, every rustle and chirp setting his senses on high alert.
"Next quest available," the System chimed in his mind, cutting through the thick silence.
Kiran paused, his heart pounding with excitement and dread. The voice had become a lifeline, a guide in this chaotic world. He focused, willing the quest prompt to appear.
Quest: Locate the Spirit Beast.
Objective: Find and subdue a low-tier Spirit Beast.
Reward: EXP and a chance to acquire a Spirit Beast companion.
Failure: Minor penalties—loss of HP.
The prospect of encountering a Spirit Beast sent a thrill through him. A companion? It could be an invaluable asset in his quest for revenge. Kiran quickly reviewed what he knew about Spirit Beasts. They were mystical creatures, infused with Qi, often stronger than regular beasts. Some were known to possess unique abilities, making them sought after by cultivators.
"Where can I find one?" Kiran asked the System, his mind racing.
"Spirit Beasts often inhabit areas rich in Qi, usually near sacred grounds or spiritual pools. Proceed westward for approximately five kilometers," the System responded.
Nodding, Kiran set off again, his determination fueling each step. As he moved deeper into the forest, the atmosphere began to shift. The air grew thicker, tinged with an electric energy that prickled against his skin. It was both exhilarating and foreboding, as if the forest itself was alive and aware of his presence.
He passed through a grove where ancient trees towered overhead, their gnarled branches forming a natural archway. The ground was carpeted with lush, vibrant moss that seemed to absorb the light. Kiran couldn't help but admire the beauty of the forest; it was a stark contrast to the cold, sterile environment of the sect.
As he ventured further, he felt the familiar pulse of Qi growing stronger, guiding him like a beacon. But he also felt something else—a subtle vibration in the air, a warning that something was near. He slowed his pace, instincts sharpening. The quietude was heavy, every sound magnified—the rustle of leaves, the distant chirping of birds, and the soft thud of his heartbeat.
Suddenly, the bushes ahead rustled violently, and Kiran instinctively crouched low, every muscle tensed. From the underbrush emerged a creature unlike anything he had seen before. It was a small, feline Spirit Beast, its fur shimmering in hues of blue and silver. Its eyes glowed with an intelligence that sent a chill down his spine.
Kiran's heart raced; he had never encountered a Spirit Beast before. This one was likely a low-tier, but its aura was undeniable. He could feel its Qi, a gentle wave that pulsed through the air. It was beautiful, yet dangerous.
"Stay calm," he whispered to himself, crouching lower to avoid startling the creature.
The Spirit Beast's ears twitched, its gaze fixed intently on him, but it didn't move. Kiran slowly extended his hand, palm open, to show he meant no harm. He had read that Spirit Beasts could sense intentions, and he needed to establish a connection.
"Come here," he urged softly, his heart racing as he felt the energy between them shift. The beast's gaze softened, and it took a tentative step forward. Kiran held his breath, praying that the creature would trust him.
As it approached, Kiran noticed a faint glow surrounding it, a manifestation of its Qi. He reached out slowly, fingertips brushing against its soft fur. A jolt of energy coursed through him—a mix of surprise and delight. It felt as though the creature was sharing its strength, a bond forming between them.
But just as quickly as it began, the moment was shattered by a deafening roar that echoed through the trees. Kiran's heart sank as he turned to see a larger beast charging through the underbrush—a massive, wolf-like creature with dark fur and menacing red eyes.
The Spirit Beast hissed, its demeanor shifting from timid to fierce. Kiran instinctively stepped back, adrenaline flooding his system. The wolf-like beast was formidable, its size and power palpable in the air. It was clear it intended to hunt the smaller Spirit Beast.
"Fight or flee?" the System asked, its voice calm amid the chaos.
Kiran's mind raced. He was still weak, but if he didn't act, the Spirit Beast he had just formed a bond with would be slaughtered. He couldn't allow that to happen.
"Fight!" Kiran shouted, determination igniting within him. "I will protect it!"
Drawing on the Qi within him, Kiran summoned the energy he had absorbed from the vein. It surged through him, warming his core and filling him with newfound strength. He raised his hand, channeling the energy into a defensive barrier, hoping to shield the Spirit Beast.
The wolf lunged, teeth bared and claws extended. Kiran focused, forming a translucent barrier just as the beast struck. The impact sent shockwaves through him, the barrier cracking under the force, but it held.
The wolf recoiled, momentarily stunned, and Kiran seized the opportunity. With a roar of defiance, he charged forward, fists glowing with Qi. He had never fought anything in his life, but desperation fueled his every move. He wouldn't let fear dictate his actions.
With a swift punch, he struck the wolf, the force of his attack enhanced by the Qi flowing through him. The beast snarled, staggering back. It was stronger than he anticipated, but Kiran pressed on, driven by the need to protect his newfound companion.
The Spirit Beast took advantage of the distraction, darting between the trees, its agility unmatched. Kiran could see it drawing on its own Qi, preparing to join the fight.
But the wolf was relentless, lunging again, its eyes filled with fury. Kiran barely dodged its massive jaws, feeling the rush of wind as they snapped shut just inches from his face. He rolled to the side, scrambling to regain his footing, heart racing.
"Channel the Qi!" the System urged. "Use the energy to amplify your strength!"
With a deep breath, Kiran focused, feeling the energy surge within him. He channeled it into his legs, propelling himself toward the wolf with newfound speed. He delivered a powerful kick to its side, feeling the satisfaction of impact as the beast stumbled.
The Spirit Beast joined in, leaping onto the wolf's back and sinking its claws into the creature's fur. Kiran watched in awe as the two fought in tandem, an unspoken bond of trust solidifying between them.
The wolf roared in rage, bucking violently. Kiran didn't hesitate. He focused his energy into one final strike, gathering Qi in his fist. "This ends now!"
With all his strength, he launched himself at the wolf, aiming for its exposed side. The punch connected, and a shockwave of energy rippled through the air. The wolf howled in pain, staggering back, its strength faltering.
Kiran felt the power within him surge, the energy of the forest responding to his call. The bond with the Spirit Beast seemed to amplify his strength, lending him a confidence he had never known.
As the wolf fell to the ground, panting heavily, Kiran stood over it, adrenaline coursing through his veins. The creature glared at him with defiance, but Kiran felt no fear.
"You are stronger than I thought," the System noted. "You have achieved victory."
The Spirit Beast jumped down, standing beside Kiran, its fur bristling but its eyes softening as it regarded him. A new understanding passed between them, one built on shared struggle and survival.
Kiran knelt beside the wolf, which was now struggling to rise. "I don't want to kill you," he said, his voice steady. "Leave this place and don't return. I have no interest in slaughter. But if you come back, I won't show mercy."
The wolf glared at him for a moment longer before turning tail and bolting into the underbrush, disappearing into the shadows of the forest. Kiran exhaled deeply, the tension draining from his body.
"Quest completed. EXP awarded: 200. Additional reward: Bond with Spirit Beast established."
Kiran felt a rush of exhilaration, the adrenaline still pulsing through him. The bond with the Spirit Beast meant they could grow stronger together, and it was a step toward building the power he so desperately needed.
He turned to the Spirit Beast, which had been watching him intently. "So… what do I call you?"
It tilted its head, as if considering the question. Kiran grinned. "How about 'Shadow'? You know, because of your coloring?"
The Spirit Beast let out a soft trill, as if in agreement.
"Alright, Shadow. Let's see what else this forest has to offer."
With renewed purpose, Kiran and Shadow set off deeper into the wilderness. They would seek out more Qi, face whatever challenges lay ahead, and grow stronger together. The path of vengeance was just beginning, and Kiran was ready to embrace it fully.
Each step forward was a promise—a promise to himself, to Shadow, and to those who had betrayed him. He would reclaim his strength and rewrite his fate.
