Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1: Prologue

"I Love you and I want you." He said holding her hands.

Looking into the serene yet cold eyes of her supposed husband, Lyra wondered if she had heard him correctly or it was just her imagination. He had just said words foreign to his tongue and to her ears.

Those words she wasn't sure he meant. Was he mistaken? Was he drunk? She wondered. She took her eyes away and retracted her hand from his.

She couldn't stay here. She watched as he stared at her in confusion. She quickly picked her bags and turned to leave.

But again he spoke causing her to unconsciously freeze where she stood.

"You can't leave Lyra. Our contract hasn't ended. Only I can make that decision."

He was right. She knew she couldn't leave until the contract ended but she couldn't spend a day more in that house. Besides, he didn't need her anymore. He had a fiancé.

" Your fiancé has returned so there's no need to keep pretending. I don't want to be a burden to you or anyone so it's only right that I leave." She explained to him even though she didn't want to.

She could be nothing but a maid and nothing could change that. She was no fitting woman for this man. Even though, it was painful to leave her love behind, it was the right thing to do. After all, it was one-sided and it could get her in trouble. His confession of love to her was probably just to get her to stay but why would he want her to stay?

This man belonged to someone else, it was time for her to let him go. She felt him behind her and shivered unconsciously as his hands slipped around her waist. He leaned towards her ears and whispered.

"You are my wife, not a burden. Lyra Levine, you're the only woman for me. I won't let you go."

~~A JOB IN LOS ANGELES ~~

The train came to a stop at the station and the passengers got down one at a time. It was finally her turn and as she stepped down from the suffocating train, Lyra Levine let out a long sigh and grinned in excitement. She was finally in the big city of LA. The thought of this made her want to run around but she simply couldn't do that.

The woman who had stepped out after her came to her side. "C'mon, we've wasted enough time already. Your new bosses must be wondering what has kept you. " The woman said to Lyra who nodded in reply. They walked out of the station and waited by the road for a cab. A cab finally stopped in front of them and they got in.

In an hour and some minutes, they had gotten to their destination. The cab was allowed into the estate after a quick search. It was a big estate with so many beautiful houses. Lyra looked outside the window in admiration. She still couldn't believe she was in LA. It felt so surreal that Lyra had to pinch herself to make sure she wasn't dreaming. She had been told that her new bosses where wealthy but she wasn't expecting something so amazing. She was from a small town and even the richest person didn't live in such a big estate.

"Lyra, Listen to me. This is where you will stay from now on. You and I know how big an opportunity this is, so please, don't do anything to jeopardize this job. Your parents are counting on you." The woman who had brought her and was also her aunt warned her calmly and Lyra nodded. Of course, she wasn't going to do anything stupid. It was a dream come true and she wasn't planning on ruining it for both herself and her family.

Lyra Levin is a 21 years old girl who is very determined and hardworking. Although she was fortunate enough to finish college, she didn't have the same luck getting a job that befitted her qualifications. Lyra was the eldest child of her parents and knew she had a big responsibility ahead of her so instead of sitting and waiting for some big job, she decided to earn a living through minimal jobs. She had worked at a bar, at a restaurant, at orphanage homes, as a tutor, as a baby sitter and so much more. She was ready to do any job just so she could provide for her family.

Her Parents weren't the typical modern parents, they both didn't attend school but they made sure their eldest daughter did and now it was time to show them that their sacrifice wasn't in vain.

Luckily for her, her Aunt, Mrs. Beatrice came over to their town for a visit whereby she had persuaded Lyra's parents to let her come to the city where she could easily get her a job. They approved at once and now here she was in the big and famous city of Los Angeles.

She turned in her seat to face her aunt. "Thank you very much Aunty B. This is really a lot and I'm very grateful to you for helping me get this job. I promise I won't let you or my parents down. You know i'm a good girl." She said to her aunt who smiled at her words. " I know that sweetie and I trust you. Just remain a good girl and you'll be fine."

The cab finally stopped at their destination. Lyra opened the car door and got out to behold the gorgeous sight before her. This was probably the biggest building in the estate and it was so beautiful. It was painted white from the top to the bottom and it looked like a palace. Her aunt took her hands and led her towards the entrance of the mansion. A maid greeted them as they walked to the door. Lyra was about to push the door so as to open it but was startled as it automatically opened and a voice was heard. " Welcome to the Donovan Mansion." This made Lyra turn quickly realizing the door had just spoken. She had never seen anything so weird in her life. She took her focus back to the house as her aunt led her into a hall like living room. It was so big, it could occupy a hundred persons. The butler walked out accompanied by a maid to attend to them. "Welcome Mrs. Beatrice and Miss.. Please do have your seats. Madam will be down in a few minutes." He told them signalling the maid who quickly dropped a tray on the small side table in front of them.

There was a plate of biscuits and two glasses of wine on the tray. Lyra's eyes almost left it's sockets when she saw this. She had never tasted wine and her hands were shaking and silently pleading to hold that glass. "Thank you Mr. Brooks." Her aunt replied the butler who nodded his head and left with the maid. Lyra couldn't bring herself to eat the biscuit even after her aunt asked her to so she just stared on and anticipated meeting her new bosses.

Soon, the sound of hills were heard and Lyra sighted a sophisticated woman walking down the stairs in slow strides. Her aunt got up and She followed not wanting to be disrespectful on her first day. The woman finally got to where they stood and smiled. " Beatrice. It's nice to see you after such a long time." The woman said and gave her aunt a small hug. Was this her boss? Lyra wondered. "Me too Madam. I'm honored to be here again." Her aunt replied to the beautiful woman. The woman's eyes met hers and she lowered her head timidly. Lyra noticed the woman was now in front of her and quickly greeted to show some respect. "Good day ma'am." "Raise your head up dear. What's your name?" Lyra slightly raised her head up. "Lyra." She answered politely. "Lyra. What a beautiful name for a beautiful girl. It suits you and I'm already hundred percent positive you are the right girl for the job." The woman said with a smile. Lyra was curious about the woman's words. Wasn't she there to work as a maid? She wouldn't be the first maid there so what did the woman mean by the right girl? She wiped away the thought and focused on what was happening around her. The woman gestured for them to seat and they did. "Tell me a little about yourself dear." The woman who had already identified herself as Mrs. Donovan said to her and Lyra proceeded in introducing herself properly...
