Anaya had come to stand near him. She had the particular quality of someone who had read the developing situation and was choosing her words carefully, which for Anaya meant she was probably not going to choose them at all.
She was right. She didn't.
Celeste had descended from the rise and was taking in the cleared corridor with the satisfaction of someone whose specific task had been accomplished and who was prepared to stop now and receive the acknowledgment that stopping was appropriate.
She looked at Damon's face.
Then at the direction he was looking.
Then back at his face.
"No," she said.
Damon turned toward the main field.
"We have a position to hold," Celeste said.
"The corridor is clear."
"Our assignment was the corridor."
"The assignment was to make sure nothing got past us. Nothing is getting past us. The corridor doesn't need four people to hold nothing."
