Innocence was chilling in the Dream Dojo, floating upside down just because they could, when Aria walked in with a look that screamed "I've got a surprise, and you might not like it."
*Uh oh,* Innocence thought to their imaginary audience. *Looks like the fun police are here. What's the bet she's gonna try to make this 'training' thing actually challenging?*
"Innocence," Aria said, her ever-changing face settling on a mix of excitement and worry, "you've been doing... well, incredibly.
But we need to see how you handle real pressure."
Innocence flipped right-side up, grinning like a cat that just found the world's biggest ball of yarn. "Pressure? Me?
Aria, my dear, I eat pressure for breakfast.
With a side of impossible, and a tall glass of 'you've gotta be kidding me.'"
Aria's lips twitched, fighting a smile. "Well, then.
You're going to love this.
We're upping the ante.
You versus twenty of our Dreamweavers."
Innocence's eyes went wide, but not with fear.
Oh no, this was pure, unadulterated glee. "Twenty?
Why not make it fifty?
A hundred? Ooh, how about the entire dream population?
Now that would be a party!"
*Twenty dreamweavers?* Innocence thought, barely containing their excitement. *It's like Christmas came early, and Santa brought me a whole toybox of playmates!*
Aria shook her head, but she was smiling now. "Twenty is plenty, trust me.
These aren't newbies, Innocence.
They're trained, they're skilled, and they're ready for your... unique style."
"Unique?" Innocence put a hand to their chest in mock offense. "I prefer 'devastatingly brilliant' or 'mind-blowingly awesome.' But unique works too, I guess."
As they spoke, the doors of the Dream Dojo swung open.
In marched twenty Dreamweavers, each looking more serious than the last.
They lined up in neat rows, like the world's most magical army.
Innocence bounced on their toes, grinning from ear to ear. "Oh boy, oh boy! It's like my birthday and New Year's all rolled into one!
Please tell me we're not just going to stand around looking pretty.
Though, I gotta say, I've got that part covered."
Aria moved to the side of the room, raising her hand. "The rules are simple.
Last one standing wins. And Innocence? Try not to break reality too much.
We just had the Dojo repainted."
"No promises!" Innocence sang out, already plotting a dozen different ways to turn this serious bunch into a cartoon catastrophe.
Aria's hand dropped. "Begin!"
Instantly, the Dojo erupted into chaos.
Dreamweavers launched into action, each one trying to outdo the others in taking down Innocence.
The first wave came at Innocence with elemental attacks.
Fire, water, earth, and air swirled towards them in a dizzying display of power.
*Oh, playing the classics, are we?* Innocence thought, their grin never faltering. *Time to show them some new tunes!*
As the elements crashed towards them, Innocence didn't dodge.
Instead, they opened their mouth impossibly wide and... swallowed the attacks whole.
The Dreamweavers stared in shock as Innocence's cheeks bulged comically.
Then, with a wink and a bow, Innocence let out an enormous burp.
Rainbow-colored bubbles flew out, each one containing a tiny, swirling elemental storm.
"Excuse me!" Innocence giggled. "Guess those elements didn't agree with me.
Who wants a bubble?"
The bubbles floated towards the stunned Dreamweavers, popping on contact and drenching them in their own attacks.
*And that, folks, is how you fight fire with... well, everything!* Innocence thought triumphantly.
But the Dreamweavers weren't done yet.
The next wave came at Innocence with mental attacks, trying to trap them in illusions and mind-bending realities.
Innocence felt the world around them shift and warp.
Suddenly, they were standing on a tiny platform, surrounded by an infinite void.
"Ooh, existential dread!" Innocence exclaimed. "My favorite!"
Instead of panicking, Innocence pulled out a paintbrush from thin air.
With quick, cartoon-like strokes, they painted a door on the void itself.
"Let's see what's behind door number one!" they announced, swinging it open.
The door opened onto a beach scene, complete with palm trees and a setting sun.
Innocence stepped through, pulling the door closed behind them. The void, and the Dreamweavers' illusion, vanished.
"Ah, much better," Innocence said, lounging on a suddenly-appearing beach chair. "Anyone care for a piña colada?"
The Dreamweavers exchanged baffled looks.
How were they supposed to trap someone who treated reality like their personal coloring book?
*Too easy,* Innocence thought. *Come on, folks.
Give me a real challenge!*
As if hearing their thoughts, the Dreamweavers changed tactics.
Instead of attacking Innocence directly, they started warping the Dojo itself.
The floor turned to quicksand, the walls became living vines trying to ensnare Innocence, and the ceiling rained down sleep-inducing pollen.
"Now we're talking!" Innocence cheered, bouncing around like they were on a giant trampoline.
As the quicksand tried to suck them down, Innocence's legs stretched like rubber, keeping them above the surface.
They dodged the vines like a character in a platform game, bouncing off walls and swinging from the ceiling.
But the pollen was trickier.
As it fell, Innocence felt their eyes getting heavy.
*Uh oh, can't fall asleep in a dream.
That's like... dream-ception or something,* Innocence thought, fighting back a yawn.
Then, a lightbulb went off in their head.
Literally.
A cartoonish lightbulb appeared above Innocence's head, shining brightly.
"Who needs sleep when you can have... a dance party!" Innocence shouted.
With a snap of their fingers, the falling pollen transformed into glittering disco balls.
The Dojo's atmosphere changed in an instant, turning into a wild nightclub complete with pulsing lights and a booming beat.
"Come on, everybody!" Innocence called out, already doing an impressive rendition of the Robot. "Dance like the fate of the dream world depends on it!"
To the Dreamweavers' shock (and some of their secret delight), they found themselves unable to resist the rhythm.
Soon, the entire Dojo was one big dance floor, with even the most serious Dreamweavers busting out moves.
*Now this is what I call dream manipulation!* Innocence thought, leading a conga line of very confused but enthusiastically dancing opponents.
As the dance party reached its peak, five of the Dreamweavers collapsed from exhaustion, tapping out of the fight.
"And that's how you dream-dance your way to victory!" Innocence announced, doing a perfect moonwalk across the dance floor.
But the remaining fifteen Dreamweavers weren't giving up.
They regrouped, determination etched on their faces.
One of them stepped forward, her eyes glowing with power. "Enough games," she said. "Let's see how you handle this!"
The Dreamweaver clapped her hands, and suddenly the Dojo was filled with mirrors.
But these weren't ordinary mirrors.
Each one showed a different version of Innocence, each with its own unique power.
"Mirror, mirror, on the wall," the Dreamweaver said with a smirk, "who's the dreamiest of them all?"
The mirror-Innocences stepped out of their reflections, surrounding the real Innocence.
Each one mimicked Innocence's grin, but there was something off about them.
Something not quite right.
*Ooh, evil twins!* Innocence thought excitedly. *Always wanted some of those.
Christmas lists are so much easier when there's more than one of you.*
But as the mirror-Innocences closed in, Innocence felt a flicker of... not fear, exactly, but maybe the tiniest hint of concern.
These copies had all of their creativity, all of their dream-bending power.
This could actually be tricky.
*Alright, brain,* Innocence thought, *time to earn your keep.
How do we out-Innocence... ourselves?*
As the mirror-Innocences launched into action, each one using a different wild, reality-warping power, the real Innocence stood perfectly still.
Their eyes closed, a look of intense concentration on their face.
The Dreamweavers watched in confusion.
Why weren't they fighting back?
Suddenly, Innocence's eyes snapped open.
A mischievous grin spread across their face. "You know what they say," they said, "if you can't beat 'em... be them!"
With a dramatic wave of their arms, Innocence's body began to shift and change.
They grew taller, wider, their limbs stretching and multiplying.
In seconds, Innocence had transformed into a giant, multi-armed version of themselves.
Each arm moved independently, countering the attacks of the mirror-Innocences with ease. One arm turned an incoming fireball into a flock of butterflies.
Another caught a lightning bolt and used it as a jump rope.
A third arm reached out and simply erased one of the mirror-Innocences from existence with a cartoonish "pop!"
"What's the matter?" Giant-Innocence asked, their voice booming through the Dojo. "Never seen an Innocence-zilla before?"
The mirror-Innocences, faced with this new, improved version of their original, began to falter.
One by one, they glitched and fizzled out, unable to compete with the sheer imaginative power of the real thing.
The Dreamweaver who created them stared in disbelief. "But... but that's impossible! You can't just... grow extra arms!"
Giant-Innocence leaned down, their grin wider than ever. "Impossible?
In a dream?
Oh, honey.
You've got a lot to learn about impossible.
The Impossible is impossible by definition!"
With a gentle flick of one of their many fingers, Giant-Innocence sent the Dreamweaver flying into a conveniently appeared pile of pillows.
She landed with a soft "oof," out of the fight.
As Giant-Innocence turned to face the remaining Dreamweavers, they saw something that made them pause.
The Dreamweavers were huddled together, whispering furiously. And in the center of their huddle was a face Innocence hadn't seen before.
*Ooh, a new player enters the game!* Innocence thought excitedly. *Wonder what tricks this one's got up their sleeve?*
The huddle broke apart, and the new Dreamweaver stepped forward.
He was different from the others, with a kind face and gentle eyes.
But there was something else about him, a quiet confidence that made Innocence's spider-sense tingle.
"Hi there!" Innocence called out, shrinking back down to their normal size. "New to the party? I'm Innocence, dream extraordinaire and part-time reality repairman.
And you are?"
The new Dreamweaver smiled softly. "I'm Whisper," he said, his voice indeed barely above a whisper. "And I think it's time we ended this game."
Innocence's grin widened. "End the game?
But we're just getting started!
Come on, Whisper.
Show me what you've got.
I promise I'll go easy on you.
Maybe."
Whisper's smile never faltered. "As you wish," he said.
And then... nothing happened.
Innocence blinked, waiting for some grand attack or reality-bending nightmare.
But Whisper just stood there, that same gentle smile on his face.
"Uh, no offense, Whisper buddy," Innocence said, scratching their head, "but is this your big move? Standing and smiling? Because I gotta say, it's not very-"
Innocence's voice cut off abruptly.
Their eyes widened in shock.
They opened their mouth to speak again, but no sound came out.
*What the heck?* Innocence thought, a flicker of panic rising in their chest. *What did he do to me?*
Whisper took a step forward, his voice still soft. "I didn't do anything to you, Innocence.
You did it to yourself."
Innocence's jaw dropped. *Did he just... read my mind?*
"Yes," Whisper replied out loud. "I did.
That's my ability.
I don't create illusions or bend reality.
I simply... suggest.
And your mind does the rest."
Understanding dawned on Innocence.
Whisper hadn't taken their voice.
He had simply suggested that Innocence couldn't speak, and their own incredibly powerful imagination had made it real...
